Book Description

January 27, 2009
In this off-the-beaten-sidewalk debut, native New Yorker Daphne Uviller reveals the secrets of a sexy, story-filled Big Apple, where a mystery lurks behind every apartment door—and a savvy but slightly lost young woman unexpectedly finds herself holding the keys.

In a city brimming with opportunities for heroism, twenty-seven-year-old Zephyr Zuckerman has often fantasized about committing acts of bravery that would make front-page news. Now she may get her big break—though it may require plunging a few toilets. When the superintendent of her parents’ Greenwich Village brownstone is led away in handcuffs, unemployed Zephyr takes over his post and unleashes her inner sleuth: discovering titillating secrets about her tenants—from a smoky-voiced Frenchwoman who entertains throngs of unsavory visitors to a moody musician who just has to be hiding something—and realizing that her new reality is far more intriguing than her imagination.

Soon Zephyr has sussed out wrongs that stretch from losers on the Internet to art fraud and an international crime ring. The mob thinks she’s in the FBI, and the FBI thinks she’s in the mob—a predicament she needs to clear up fast. But perhaps not before the cute, surly exterminator helps her solve the mystery of what to do with the rest of her life….

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Uvillers debut is as gleefully unpretentious as the rhinestones on narrator Zephyr Zuckermans thrift-shop dress. This is not a Jesus-saving kind of story, Zephyr warns, and, indeed, sex, bodily functions, white lies and general irreverence keep this tale of love, friendship and New York City popping along. Zephyr and her best friends are flawed and lovable: divorcée party-crasher Tag is a globe-trotting scientist; Lucy, a social worker, writes notes on $10 bills and hopes that the right man will answer her call; Mercedes, a violinist, snags a celebrity boyfriend; and Abigail, a professor, falls into Internet-dating catastrophe. Zephyr, meanwhile, has dropped out of school, and her major concern, other than getting over an ex, is figuring out what she wants to be. So when her super is arrested, Zephyr inherits his post and discovers that there is far more happening under her roof than she can handle. The novel gallops at full speed from the very first line, and though there are times when it would serve Uviller well to rein it in a bit, this is undoubtedly smarter and funnier than most other girls-in-the-city novels. From Booklist

Indecisive, overeducated, 27-year-old Zephyr Zuckerman is contemplating career options and living in an apartment in her parents’ Greenwich Village brownstone when their building superintendent is arrested without warning. At her parents’ behest, Zephyr fills in as super and starts digging into the building’s secrets amid scheduling service calls. With the help of handsome, mysterious exterminator Gregory Samson, she discovers a hidden staircase from the super’s apartment and the unsavory business her neighbor Roxana is running from her home. As she puts the pieces together, Zephyr develops a thing for both sleuthing and Gregory. Debut novelist Uviller borrows from her own life—with some admittedly bizarre twists—for this lively, smart chick-lit mystery. The characters are likable—especially Zephyr’s overachieving, yet unassuming coterie of prep-school friends. Readers will also appreciate the many literary references and Uviller’s insider’s view of New York City. --Aleksandra Walker

Half way through this book, as I read it on an elevator on my way to an appointment, a stranger actually said, as the doors parted: "what is that you're reading that makes you laugh so much?"

Now that doesn't happen every day.

But Super in the City is just the kind of laugh out loud story which will leave you with a bit of grief when it finally ends. The self-obsessed but never dull Zephyr was a ton of fun to follow around for a few hundred pages. And I'll never look at the floor of my closet the same way again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hot Town, Super in the City, January 27, 2009

Setting the main constraints of the genre itself aside, this book was quite good. In fact, I just plain old liked it! The book is the simple, friendly little tale of an extremely likable woman with the fantastic name of Zephyr Zuckerman. She merrily skips through the novel, going through a range of emotions and catastrophic situations before finally getting her perfect, rainbow over Manhattan happy ending. It's great.

Most simply, this book was a nice little moment of escapism and one that is not so far-fetched as to really hurt you when you come crashing back down from chick lit land. Ms. Uviller's writing style is utterly fantastic: intelligent without seeming pretentious, funny without hitting you over the head with the punchline and wonderfully real-feeling, even in its moments of greatest unreality. Zephyr honestly comes to life, as do the people she encounters along the way.

I loved this book. The story was funny, sassy and smart. This is chick lit with some depth to it. I can't wait for more from this author.
