4.0 out of 5 stars A seriously tough classic, November 15, 2001
This review is from: Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (Video Game)
Take a visit to the classic arcade games, as you are a knight, on a side scrolling, zombie / monster killing quest to save your princess from Lucifer himself. Along the way to Lucifer through eight action packed worlds you pick up different weapons, like the knives, crossbow, torch and various others, to battle zombies, monsters, birds, magicians, wolves, skeletons, ghosts, ghouls and tons of traps. This would be a five star game, if it were not for its huge difficulty! Hundreds of enemies coming at you, no save points (when you die you start at the beginning of the level), and two hits your dead, that spells a short lived play time for younger players. Good graphics, side scrolling platform game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Painfully good, October 20, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (Video Game)
This game is painful, brutal, unforgiving, punishing, torturous, unrelenting and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I grew up playing games in an era where games were ridiculously difficult either because the programming wasn't that great and the software was just buggy or because game programmers of the '80s were insane. Either way, instances of mass quantities of enemies flooding the screen, one-hit deaths for the player, no ability to save your progress and very limited continues that, at best, start you from the beginning of the level you were in when you lost all of your lives were commonplace.

This was the climate of gaming during the days of the NES. The climate shifted somewhat in the 16-bit generation of the Super NES and Genesis; games seemed to get "easier" [compare: Metroid (NES) vs. Super Metroid (SNES)]. Thankfully, there were a few hold-outs and Super Ghouls and Ghosts was most definitely one of these titles.

In a word, this game is HARD. The six relatively short stages you are provided with can quite literally take you months or even years to complete. And just when you think it's over, it's not. After "completing" the game you're treated to having to re-do the whole thing again to obtain a particular item. This 2nd Quest mechanic has been a tradition in the Ghosts and Goblins series of games and, while it may be repetitive to have to replay everything to truly finish the game, it does double your play time with it.

Graphically, this game has held up quite well. Similar to how Super Metroid, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island have held up. There is some slow-down, but the game is "ancient" and from a 16-bit platform so it should be expected. The sprites are large and detailed and there is a nice variety of different enemies and bosses in the game.

The music, while not Castlevania caliber, fits very well and sounds quite nice. You never think to yourself, "Why did they put this track here?"; everything makes sense.

The controls are familiar to anyone that's played Ghosts and Goblins or Ghouls and Ghosts. They aren't exactly the best and feel a bit "stiff", but they won't prevent you from completing the game.

Gameplay: This title is a 2D action/platformer. You move left and right and, sometimes, up and down killing enemies by throwing your weapon (no hack and slash) at them and collecting power-up. Enemies appear en masse and if your character (Arthur) is hit by an enemy he loses his armor. If Arthur is hit a second time, he's dead. You can collect a variety of weapons to use by killing enemies or from treasure chests that appear: Javelins, Daggers, etc. Unfortunately, when you pick up a new weapon, it replaces the one you are currently using. There is also Magic Armor that can be found. This armor still only grants Arthur two hits before death, but, when equipped, the armor will allow Arthur to unleash a special magic attack based upon the current weapon he is using; each magic attack is completely unique to it's respective weapon. Arthur also has a double-jump that definitely comes in handy. Continues are limited (you get 3 to start), but you have the potential to increase your continues if you collect the money bag items that appear. This will allow you to "purchase" additional continues after you have collected enough of them.

The story is very basic: Arthur must save the princess from the demons and destroy the head demon. That's it. It's worked for all other games in this series, so good enough. If you want a lot of depth to the narrative, you'll have to look elsewhere.

This game or it's predecessors aren't for everyone. Some will find the difficulty way too punishing, but for anyone who enjoys games like Ikaruga, the R-Type and Gradius series, Contra and the original 8-bit Mega Man games, this is totally worth the purchase price.

4.0 out of 5 stars the challenge of a lifetime, July 12, 2006

This review is from: Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (Video Game)
It seems everyone who grew up with the Super NES will have memories of Super Ghouls and Ghosts, and particularly, the extreme difficulty. My memory of the game is somewhat blurry, and short. In fact I only ever played the game once. To no one's surprise, I lost in a few seconds. BUT, it didn't seem like the hardest game ever made or anything. According to people I've talked to, I had to play the game for about an hour and THEN I'd realize the game was impossibly hard.

It's fascinating how the difficulty hasn't stopped the game from becoming a classic. When I talk to people about the Super NES Super Ghouls and Ghosts ALWAYS comes up. You just don't forget a game like this.

Simply put, this is one of the best games ever made. (and not to mention, one of the more difficult as well.) You play as Arthur and fight off wave after wave of demon's and other beasts and some of the boss fights are just impressive to behold. But just don't expect this to be a game you can beat in one sitting. No matter how much you've leveled up your shields, one hit and you're back to having a pair of boxer-shorts as your only protection. So, despite the difficulty curve some people might have to overcome to enjoy this classic game, as long as you're not the kind of person that would throw down your controller after dying a few times, this game is highly recommended. 5.0 out of 5 stars Best game ever, November 29, 2003

This review is from: Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (Video Game)
I first played this game probly 10 years ago, but from the first time i played it, i knew it was the tightest game ever made for nintendo. It is hard as hell though, and it will definitely take you a grip to get into the harder levels. This game is so hard, it cost me 4 sets of controllers because i have a bad habit of going crazy when i keep dying. The monsters and environments would have to be the weirdest i have ever seen. This game is symbolic fact that there were definitely some weird drugs going around in the 80's. But once you finally do get to the end and beat the last boss and celebrate massively, you might as well sit back down because it seems the Princess has lost her ring in one of the levels and you have to go back and beat them all again. And no, the levels haven't changed a bit, its the exact same thing. Just a little pre-warning. I'm out, 1

5.0 out of 5 stars Zombies, Ghouls, Demons, Ghosts, November 27, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (Video Game)
NOT COMPATIBLE WITH YOBO FC TWIN SNES/NES System!
Graphics on this game are the Most Creepy and Horrifying That Probably was ever seen on SNES and to this day will haunt you. Zombies on here is stuff you would only see in George Romero's Films. They actually look dead, and the animation is so awesome it pretty much throws you into the game whether you actually fight it or not. The Zombies Make you feel like you are in a horror film in your own living room. The Demons Are randomly Spooky and Disturbing. You can almost see the evil in their eyes when you look at them. The Hell hounds on this Game will have you watching the family Chiuahuah from the corner of your eyes whilst you play. Its a really disturbing game compared to its Predecessor, Ghosts and Goblins. Random traps on this game will have you back at the beginning of the level in No time. They are everywhere and you wont be expecting half of them until its too late. From Human skulls Hurling out of the mouth of Demonic totem poles to Being on the wrong platform when a massive wave takes you out. This game keeps you on edge so much you might panic and End up failing the Level. It is one of the most spooky and Difficult games ever invented for the SNES. I cannot stress enough how difficult it will be. The Best and Most addicting part of the game is the little voice reminding you that you can do better Next time... Only to end up getting farther and failing again to a trap you werent expecting. The Zombies Randomly appear but unlike Ghosts and Goblins, Are slower and somewhat Predictable. Meaning that some pop up in the same place when things get too hard so you know to watch out. Each Level has tons of different weapons from crossbows and super swords to Super armor and shields,( the sheild gives you 3 hits instead of 2 and your dead.) All the enemies are unique and not repetitive. The Bad Part of this Game is that its Not compatible for the FC TWIN SNES/NES system by Yobo. It works in the system until you get to the third level and then Everything goes black. another Con to Super ghosts and ghouls is that its extremely difficult and Challenging. The pros are that it may just be the Very First and Most realistic horror game for the SNES. The Graphics are indescribable. Lets hope if you buy it you'll do better than i ever could. If you beat it i tip my hat to you...

3.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT CHALLENGE, November 6, 2011
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (Video Game)
I got Super Ghosts and Ghouls at the recommendation of a friend and was initially very impressed with this game. The music is near-perfect, the level design is very colorful and well-done, and the enemies look really good. So why give this game a 3-star rating? What could have gone wrong? Two big things. First of all, once your character jumps, you have completely lost control of him until he lands. If you make a wrong jump, tough luck you have to see it through. In a game that involves lots of jumping and jumping over level hazards, this was just a bad idea. Secondly, if you get hit once, you lose your armor and are in your underwear. You get hit again and you're dead. There are no checkpoints in the levels and it's near impossible to get your armor back. These levels just have death written all over them. To top it all off, you're supposed to be Arthur. You know, the Arthur from myth and legend. The one who assembled the Knights of the Round Table. The holder of Excaliber? Why on earth is this guy such a wimp? On the bright side, you can get lots of cool power-ups for both your weapons and armor, but even with upgrades, if you get hit twice, you're dead. Why does this game even have death-traps and lethal stage hazards?? It's like death-insurance! Did they think there wasn't enough stuff in the levels to kill you as it is?!? Don't get me wrong, this game does have some redeeming qualities, but bottom line, this is one of the most ridiculously hard games I've ever played. It causes me more frustration than anything else. If you want to try this game out, go right ahead, but it would probably be easier to fight real ghouls and ghosts than try and play through this game!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ghosts N Goblins series continues with this tough as nails classic title, August 19, 2011
By
BX Lounger (The Bronx, NY) - See all my reviews
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (Video Game)
Anyone who ever played any game in the Ghosts N Goblins series will tell you that only certain kind of gamers can handle it. Only those who thrive on high difficulty, intense challenges and hours of grueling game play can withstand it. Super Ghouls N Ghosts is part of that legendary series. Super Ghouls N Ghosts was a classic SNES title released in 1991. This game made boys into men...and then those same men back into boys. Those who knew about the Ghosts N Goblins series dared to play this game.

You play as Arthur, a brave knight, who sets out to rescue his girlfriend/princess from the clutches of Lucifer. You must go through multiple stages and battle many enemies before you face off with the big boss himself. Then, in a horrific twist, you must go through the stages once again, and this time you must find a specific weapon. If you do not, you will not be able to go all the way. No game messes with the minds of gamers and hits you with intense difficulty quite like the Ghosts and Goblins games; Super GnG holds up this tradition proudly.

The PROS: This game has great graphics, music and sound effects. Controls are easy from the get go so no worries since you will be focused on getting through the stages. Capcom added a new double jump feature to get through sections of gaps thus added even more variety in the game play. You won't be able to beat the game in one setting so they added a set number of continues and if you get a lot of points, you can increase it as well.

The CONS: If there is one thing that I can say here is that this game is HARD. You will not beat this game in a few dozen tries. You will scream. You will get angry. You might break your controller in half. You might end up tossing your Super NES against a wall or out the window. If you don't like incredibly and brutally difficult games, do not buy this! Consider yourself warned.

Super Ghouls N Ghosts is truly a unique game. On one hand, you have a action platform game that is great to play and carries on the reputation of the Ghosts N Goblins series. On the other hand, it is so brutally hard and unforgiving that only certain gamers who thrive off on that stuff will truly enjoy themselves. I cursed the name of the game for every time I played it. And then I went back and tried again. Would you feel the same? There's only one way to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars From a time when games lasted a while, June 9, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (Video Game)
You're a gamer. You want to spend your money on a game that's worth it. No gamer actually WANTS to buy a lame game. That's why the internet is full of game reviews and game videos.

Now, here we have the third title in the Ghouls 'n Ghosts series (and I recommend trying the other two, too). Is it hard? Yes. Will you die a lot? Yes. Will it take a long time to beat the game? Yes. Will you feel proud if/when you beat the game? YES!

See, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts comes from a time when game designers did not make a game for everyone to beat. They made games challenging. In order to beat a game, you had to invest skill, not just time. And Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is the pinnacle of that philosophy. It's not an impossible game. It's not unfair. It's simply hard. It requires reflexes and patience, but it is a very rewarding experience. If you want a game that's inexpensive but gives you a lot of rewarding gameplay, this is a great choice.

Best of all, the game will last a long time because it requires you to learn the game and actually become GOOD. By the time you beat it the game (on the 'easy' difficulty, probably), you will sit back and marvel at how far you've come. You will truly feel as though you have BEATEN the game. Once you beat this game, you will never, ever sell it or trade it away. Think about modern games: when you beat them, you just sit them on the shelf forever or you sell them. But not Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
