A sample of early Barbara, March 25, 1999

This all too brief compilation of Barbara's early recordings with producer Billy Sherill (1971-74) gives the listener a sampling of a star in the making. Mandrell sinks her teeth into some of country music's greatest songs like "The Midnight Oil" and "Tonight My Baby's Coming Home" with the zeal reflected in her later, glossier 70s and 80s records. While many of the songs' arrangements are not vastly original, Barbara Mandrell sings them like they were her own and oprepared us for her huge success in the coming years. Casual fans will want to check out MCA's THE BEST OF BARBARA MANDRELL. This CD compilation makes one curious for more of these early years, while validating to us her true stardom in the making.
