Marvin Gaye is often remembered as a Motown legend. From 1961-1980, Gaye released some of the best albums in the history of music on the label, as well as the most memorable songs. Who hasn't heard 'I Heard Through the Grapevine'? And what about the classic album 'What's Going On' which was ranked by 'Rolling Stone' in the Top 10 Greatest Albums of All-Time, out of 500. Gaye has had a storied career.

Gaye, however, left the Motown label in 1981 to sign with Columbia Records. There, he released perhaps my favorite album of his career, 'Midnight Love.' It contained the comeback hit 'Sexual Healing,' which was also his final hit. The album version, which is slightly inferior to the 12" remix, is included here.

This album also contained 'Savage in the Sack' (one of my least favorites from him, actually), 'Rockin' After Midnight' (a song that could have easily been a hit on the Motown label -- one of my favorites), and 'I Live for You.'

The problem with 'Super Hits' is it's just too short. At 10 songs, it's far too brief a summary of his Columbia years to be comprehensive. They could have included his classic 1983 NBA All-Star Game rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner,' which is easily one of the best versions I've ever heard of the song. AND COLUMBIA HAS THE RIGHTS TO THAT RECORDING!!! ARGH! I hate it when these songs are omitted.

And, why not a live version of 'What's Going On,' which was released as a single for Columbia in the 1980s? There's plenty of classic Columbia recordings omitted from this rather skimpy collection.

Overall, don't ignore Marvin Gaye's final years of his career just because they aren't as well-known as his Motown sides. They are almost as good, and as a matter of fact, I probably prefer the Columbia years over the classic Motown sides. Call me crazy, but I do. So if you see 'Super Hits' priced at 99 cents or so, buy it immediately. But if it's priced at over $4.00, you're paying too much. Look for a better Columbia collection if you really want to cover the bases for Marvin's career. 'Might I recommend 'Playlist: The Very Best of Marvin Gaye.'

Recommended, but only for the budget-minded Marvin Gaye fan who wants a brief summary of his latter day Columbia years.
