This is the first of two budget compilations that between them contain all of Ricky's essential recordings except his number one country duet with Dolly Parton (Rocking years), which can be found on various Dolly compilations. Here you will find nine of his twelve number one country hits and his debut single (Crime of passion), which didn't make number one but did enough to set Ricky's career on the path to success.

The songs here are mainly originals but include fine covers of the sixties country classics Statue of a fool (Jack Greene) and From a jack to a king (Ned Miller). Of the others, my favorites are Life turned her that way and I am a simple man but every song here is brilliant.

If you enjoy traditional country music, Ricky Van Shelton deserves a place in your collection. You could decide to buy one full-price compilation instead of the two volumes of Super hits - this would give you the Dolly duet and superior packaging but you might be disappointed at the omission of some solo hits. Another option is to buy Super hits 2 together with Greatest hits plus, a compilation that contains nine of the tracks to be found here (omitting Crime of passion), three tracks to be found on Super hits 2, the Dolly duet and a solo track (Just as I am) not available anywhere else) as well as extensive liner notes.

This is a good "hits" collection, as the other review stated as well. Also, buy Super Hits Vol. 2 and you will have a nice 20 track RVS collection. That is 4 more songs than his 16 biggest hits cd and I got both super hits cheaper than the price of a 1 disc best of cd of his, not sure though if you still can.
