The original greatest hits package HITS 1979-1989, gave a good but incomplete retrospective of Rosanne Cash's recordings. 3.0 out of 5 stars Time for an anthology, April 5, 2003

This review is from: Super Hits (Audio CD)
For those who are not real fans of Roseanne Cash, this would probably be more than sufficient for them. However, most of us who really enjoy the music or Roseanne Cash would appreciate it if the record labels would quit mocking fans with these stripped down compilations. As of right now, the following songs are either impossible to find on CD or are not available on a compilation of Roseanne Cash including the Top 20 hits "It Hasn't Happened Yet" and "Couldn't Do Nothin' Right" and the Top 10 classics "Ain't No Money", "Second To No One" and "It's Such A Small World" (in print, but not on a Roseanne Cash compilation). At present, it is difficult to even find the CD's of hers anywhere at all, though I remember seeing the original albums back in the 1990's. Though it is good that "Right Or Wrong", "Seven Year Ache" and "Kings Record Shop" remain in print, the fact is that the cost of these records on CD combined with the lack of present interest will only lead to these, too being discontinued. It is fair that since many of her biggest songs are now over 20 years old, it is time for a real compilation...a complete anthology. Here would be the song listing for a Roseanne Cash Anthology:

(All top 40 songs listed are #1 except where indicated*)

No Memories Hangin' Round (with Bobby Bare)*
Couldn't Do Nothin' Right*
Take Me, Take Me*
Seven Year Ache
My Baby Think's He's A Train
Blue Moon With Heartache
Ain't No Money*
I Wonder*

It Hasn't Happened Yet*
I Don't Know Why You Don't Want Me
Never Be You
Hold On*
Second To No One*
The Way We Make A Broken Heart
Tennessee Flat Top Box
It's Such A Small World
If You Change Your Mind
Runaway Train
I Don't Want To Spoil The Party
Black And White*
What We Really Want*

...and for a truly complete collection, the following less known songs would also be included:

Ballad Of A Teenage Queen
One Step Over The Line
On The Surface
The Wheel

A truly talented artist like Roseanne Cash, for better or for worse, should eventually have a complete collection rather than cheat fans out of the opportunity to have all of her great songs on crystal clear CD quality sound. Thus is why I only give 3 stars to this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 #1 Hits on one disc, it doesn't get any better., October 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Super Hits (Audio CD)
The original greatest hits package HITS 1979-1989, gave a good but incomplete retrospective of Rosanne Cash's recordings. SUPER HITS revisits that period, and adds the two missing #1 hits "If You Change Your Mind", and "Runaway Traing" from the KING'S RECORD SHOP(1987) album. The album puts the songs in chronological order, starting with her own song "Seven Year Ache", and concluding with her interpetation of Tthe Beatles "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party". Each and every song is a winner. The ultra-classic "Seven Year Ache" was the best way to start this album. There are her ballads, her rock songs, and her country songs. Add that up to ten #1 hits on the same album. Unfortunately the definition of SUPER HITS causes the loss of some jewels like "No Memories Hangin' Round" (from RIGHT OR WRONG), and "Hold On" (from RYTHYM AND ROMANCE) that were on HITS 1979-1989, (I can do without "I Wonder" and "Black And White") but the additions of "If You Change Your Mind" and "Runaway Train" are definately welcome. SUPER HITS comes HIGHLY RECOMMENED, buy it and you'll hear why.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sampler of a Great Talent, November 8, 2004
This review is from: Super Hits (Audio CD)
Glancing at a couple of the reviews below, I gather that some fans were a bit miffed that this budget "best of" sampler a. was not the more comprehensive anthology that Rosanne merits and b. (and this from a 2001 review)its release seemed to herald the withdrawal of much of her original catalog from the market. Well, three years later, it appears from the Amazon listing that most, if not all, of the original releases are currently available (with at least two titles available as a "twofer"). And while there's no box set at present, there is at least a somewhat more comprehensive "best of" package as well.

Bargain "greatest hits" packages make a certain commercial sense. I'm sure I'm not the only one whose curiousity is piqued by a good bargain sampler and who in turn will seek out and purchase other (full price) items by the artist in question. I had heard a number of Rosanne's tunes over the years, but it took sitting down and listening to this great little package to win me over (and kick myself for having missed out all these years).

I remember liking "Seven Year Ache" back in the day, and up until recently, that probably would have been the only Rosanne Cash song I could have named if you held a gun to my head. That song like much of the selection here has something of a So.Cal. country rock sheen to it (a la Ronstadt/Asher), which is to say it's tasty if a little slick. But to even out the mix, there are also a number of more trad. styled numbers, like the clever "
My Baby Thinks He's a Train" and her dad's own "Tennessee Flat Top Box." Rosanne seems at home in either setting, although, I have to say that in my case, the rootsier stuff was pretty much what won my heart.

When I mentioned to a friend that Rosanne was my latest discovery, she mentioned that she was a old fan, intrigued as she was by Rosanne's writing abilities (and that much is evident even in this limited sample), her bad girl past (about which I know nothing, but hey, she's John's daughter, so you gotta expect a bit of hellraising in her history), AND her compelling "less than perfect voice." Well, I told her, from what I can tell, her voice is just about perfect for the material she selects, which is about all you can ask for. After all, knowing your limitations is part and parcel of being a good singer. And Rosanne Cash is indeed a good singer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Hits by Rosanne Cash, January 20, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Super Hits (Audio CD)
This is a collection of 10 of Rosanne Cash's best songs. While she has never attained the level of recognition as her famous father, I feel that she has one of the finest voices in any genre of music. This collection includes her most recognized song, "Seven Year Ache", plus "Tennessee Flat Top Box", "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party", and "I Don't Know Why You Don't Want Me" to name a few. One of my favorites is "Blue Moon With a Heartache". This song is written and sung with such emotion that it could only come from someone who has experienced heartache. Rosanne Cash is a super artist, and this is a collection that all Rosanne's fans should own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rosanne & I were pen pals in the 60's, December 2, 2008
This review is from: Rosanne Cash-Super Hits (Audio CD)
I never met Rosanne in person, but we were pen pals for several years. She was advertizing in a teen magazine for a Beattle fan club. I saw the ad & wrote to her. That is how we became pen pals. Her first letter to me, stated that her father was a singer & he had a song out called "Ring of Fire". She wanted to know if I had heard of him? To be honest, I didn't know of him at that time. (This was in the 60's, all this was happening). Her & I went on to write many letters between us. The last correspondence I had from her, was a Christmas card from Tennessee. I still have that card & all her letters. I have always wondered, if she ever remembered me & saved my letters to her? I know this isn't the site to say this, but hey you got to give it a chance, if you can. If you somehow read this Rosanne, maybe you will remember me & give me a holler. Last name was Nichols, in Spokane, Wa. The reason I am over here in Amazon, is to buy your CD for someone special.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roseanne Cash CD, May 18, 2008
By
This review is from: Rosanne Cash-Super Hits (Audio CD)
Loved the music. The system for ordering is so easy even this caveman can do it; and, there are so many other options to buy including related other music by this performer. Love the way other areas of interest are promoted and access is a breeze.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional music, but what the label did is disgusting., February 4, 2001
By
Matt Coker (Davis, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Super Hits (Audio CD)
This collection is fabulous. With 10 #1 hits-packed with classics and wonderful performances by Rosanne Cash, one of the most talented artists in music history. Cash's catalog is one of the most rewarding in Country music. Which is why I changed my rating from 5-stars to 4-stars. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this music, I highly recommend it. But what Columbia Records/Sony Music did to her catalog after the release of this compilation is disgusting. At the time of this release all of Cash's seven studio albums and three compilations were available on CD. Within months only two of the studio albums were still in print. Cash's CDs were among the best music released in the decade-she was lightyears ahead of her competition. RIGHT OR WRONG and SOMEWHERE IN THE STARS were two of the best interpretive Country albums in history which brought new character to the music and adding a Nashville meets LA Country sound. SEVEN YEAR ACHE, was similiar, but even better housing three #1 singles and adding a new feminist stance to the music. For RHYTHM & ROMANCE Cash composed eight of the albums ten songs, and merged Country and Rock to the point where they were indistinguishable and produced two #1 hits. RHYTHM & ROMANCE came ten years before Shania Twain's THE WOMAN IN ME, where Twain was praised for discovering a new Country sound-Cash did it on that album. INTERIORS contained all original songs and meticulously chronicled life in a disfunctional relationship. These five albums are better than 75% of the Nashville product polluting record store today, and all five are gone.

This happened about three months after the release of SUPER HITS, and its a disgraceful statement about the music industry. The actions of the label prevent a fair listening to this disc-which is very intelligently compiled. It contains all of Cash's solo #1 hits-"It's A Small World" with Rodney Crowell has yet to be released on a Cash album (or if it was its not in print now). "Seven Year Ache", "My Baby Thinks He's A Train", and "Blue Moon With Heartache" are from the legendary (and unavailable) SEVEN YEAR ACHE album, and are as extraordinary as the album they come from. "Seven Year Ache" written by Cash has a classic Country feel. "My Baby Thinks He's A Train" is a terrific cover. "Blue Moon With Heartache" is also penned by Cash. Rosanne Cash is one of the best ballad writers/performers in the history of Country music, some of the most beautiful Country love songs of the 1980s came from her pen: "This Has Happened Before", "Blue Moon With Heartache", "Looking For A Corner", "Second To No One", "My Old Man", and "The Real Me". The sizzling RHYTHM & ROMANCE produced the Grammy winning hit "I Don't Know Why You Don't Want Me", written by Rosanne Cash and then-husband Rodney Crowell, which featured vocals from Vince Gill (who collaborated with Cash for a couple of the album's songs). "Never Be You" is a stunning cover written by Tom Petty. KING'S RECORD SHOP is still available, thank goodness, it was Cash's last interpretive album-a meditation of Country and Rock tradtions which produced four #1 hits, all four featured on a compilation for the first time. John Hiatt's "The Way We Make A Broken Heart" is beautifull-with brilliant arrangements. Her cover of her dad's song "Tennessee Flat Top Box" has some exceptional guitar work. Cash collaborated with Hank DeVito on "If You Change Your Mind" a fascinating song. "Runaway Train" written by John Stewart is pure dynamite, one of my favorite Cash songs. This collection concludes with "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party" written by Lennon/McCartney, and Cash's version is terrific.

The songs on this collection are incredible-but not having the original albums in print really hurts the experience. Cash's releases were some of the decade's best and those who enjoy this album might really, really like them. They also prove how far ahead Cash was upon the rest of her competition.
