All 'Til Tuesday's Singles Beautifully Remastered At Last!,
By
This review is from: Super Hits (Audio CD)
I stumbled upon this 'Til Tuesday 'Super Hits' release by accident. I've had my eyes on a great-sounding 'Til Tuesday hits package for quite a while now, wondering if Sony BMG Music would bother issuing another 'Til Tuesday compilation in order to cash in on the fans. The 1996 Coming up Close: A Retrospective hits and favorites package did not live up to my audio quality expectations, hence why I decided to not buy it. 'Super Hits' is a budget-type line initially developed by Sony Music back in the late '90s. The series has included a vast catalogue of the label's artists throughout the years. In the past few years, however, Sony, now tied with BMG Music Entertainment, has reissued a number of these collections with upgraded, shiny new packaging. The result? They all look great. Additionally, the label has issued a few of these collections for the very first time, including this 2008 issue of 'Super Hits' by 'Til Tuesday.
The result? All seven of the band's singles have been included in addition to three album cuts ("You Know The Rest", "David Denies", and "Crash And Burn"). Featured on this release are their two biggest hits, "Voices Carry" and "What About Love", which charted #8 in 1985 and #26 in 1986, respectively. Their other minor hits make the cut as well -- "Looking Over My Shoulder" (#61, 1985), "Coming Up Close" (#59, 1986), and "(Believed You Were) Lucky" (#95, 1988). Two other singles did not chart: "Love In A Vacuum" (1985) and "Rip In Heaven" (1988). All songs are the original LP versions except for the 7" single mixes of "Voices Carry" and "(Believed You Were) Lucky". While the classic "Voices Carry" has rightfully plagued numerous '80s compilations and collections since it's 1985 release the one hard-to-find gem is "What About Love". I've actually had trouble hunting down this song, believe it or not. While it has made a few collections here and there over the years they are now out of print or hard to find. It's one of those forgotten singles of the '80s! And that brings us to "Coming Up Close" -- a beautifully arranged, sung, and produced minor hit that has stood the test of time very well -- and "(Believed You Were) Lucky", a mid-tempo ballad that deserved to be a much bigger hit. While some fans may cringe at the idea of a 10-track budget release the new digital remastering will more than make up for whatever this collection is lacking in terms of content. While no mastering credits are given this disc features simply one of the best remastering jobs that I've ever heard come from the Sony or BMG music labels. The first time I popped the disc in I said, "wow!" It's absolutely stunning! It's most evident in tracks such as "Voices Carry", which has a roaring, vibrating bass line running through it! The music is crisp, clean, and bright. I never knew that this track could sound this amazing! Even slower songs like "Coming Up Close" benefit from added bass and clean seperation of instruments, significantly enhancing and widening the original dullness of those old CD pressings. Highly recommended!

This CD provides a great sampling of 'Til Tuesday's music, capturing the essence of this 80's band, including all the hits as well as a few strong album cuts.
Most of the songs explore the serious side of romantic relationships, such as the ups and downs of love and the hope of one day finding that special person. Although the term, folk rock, is often used to describe this type of music, I find that misleading.I would rather describe it as modern pop appealing more to adults than teenagers. Lead vocalist, Aimee Mann, either wrote or collaborated on all ten of these tracks. Her voice is unique, clear, sometimes delicate, and with an even delivery. The instrumental accompanyment is somewhat understated, making use of sustained guitar effects and synthesizers. My favorite song on this CD is "Coming Up Close," followed by "David Denies" and "You Know the Rest." These three cuts address the bittersweet aspect of love. Other female vocalists in this time frame include Pat Benatar, Nicolette Larson, and Belinda Carlisle. |
