good value, good music,

This is not the most complete Toto collection you can buy, or the best, but it tends to be the least expensive, and gives a good retrospective of Toto's most popular years as a group. Largely forgotten gems like "99" and "Georgy Porgy" (check out special guest vocalist Cheryl Lynn ["Got To Be Real"] on the chorus) show that there was more here than just "Rosanna" and "Africa." Serious fans will want more Toto than this collection offers, and should also check out some of their excellent contemporary work. But casual fans will get more than enough of this great group from "Super Hits"

'Several hits' would be a better title,

Good songs, super even, as usual from Toto, but there are only a few hits, accompanied by quite a lot of relatively insignificant tracks. Don't waste your money on this - the 'Past to present' compilation, though not perfect, is a far better example of Toto's best work and covers most of their hits.

Toto Fans Look Elsewhere!,

I've been a Toto fan since "The Seventh One" came out in 1988. "Toto IV", "Fahrenheit" and the forementioned "The Seventh One" I believe to be their best albums. It is hard to put together a "Hits" album for a band that has been creating music and memories for over 20 years (!) but I don't think this one is worthy of it being called a "Hits" album. "Toto Past to Present", which I only gave 3 stars because I thought that it was lacking some of their better music, is still a cut above this one. Of course, it also comes down to which style of their music you are a fan of. When I think of Toto, I think of their ballads and pop hits - songs such as "Africa", "Rosanna", "I Won't Hold You Back", "I'll Be Over You", etc. Other Toto fans appreciate their rock hits, such as "Hold the Line", "Stranger in Town", "St. George and the Dragon", etc. In my opinion, bottom line on this album is that it contains some of their less-known mediocre hits, such as "Isolation" and "Live For Today" - these 2 don't belong on a hits album! However, if you are a casual fan of Toto, or don't really know of them, there are of course good songs on here. But I would recommend spending your money or one of their truly fabulous albums from the 80's, such as "Toto IV" or "Fahrenheit."

You can do SOOOO much better...,
By Johnny Boy "The Record Collector" (Hockessin, DE) - See all my reviews

Whether you like their music or not, you cannot deny that Toto are among the most seasoned session musicians around. Including Steve Lukather on guitar, the legendary Jeff Porcaro on drums, and David Paich & Steve Porcaro on keyboards, in addition to David Hungate (1977-1983) and Mike Porcaro (1983-present) on bass guitar and a string of vocalists, Toto are one of the biggest bands in the world (they are still as big as ever in Europe, but in America, they haven't had much success in recent years), and this collection, 'Super Hits' does little to prove that.
You get 10 (that's all, 10) hits from Toto. Sure, you get 'Africa,' 'Hold the Line' and 'Rosanna' here, but where is 'I Won't Hold You Back' (arguably one of their biggest hits)? Or 'Holyanna'? Or what about 'Lea'? Or 'Pamela'? You get the picture. This collection is quite lacking, and it's missing many elements that made Toto one of the premier pop rock acts of the 1980s. Overall, you can do better. Seek out 'Past to Present 1977-1990' (which is admittedly a little dated today, but for a casual fan, it does the trick just fine) or 'The Essential Toto' for a compilation (the European 2-CD edition is the one to buy), or if you want studio albums, 'Hydra,' the self-titled debut, 'Toto IV' and 'Fahrenheit' are all great choices. Buying those studio albums is the route I recommend taking to appreciate this band. Just don't buy this. It's yet another cash grab from Columbia looking to milk the band's legacy. The 'Super Hits' series as a whole is pretty useless. Occasionally, an entry in the series will be worth the money (Aretha Franklin's and Keith Whitley's being the only two that come to mind right now), but that's seldom. Go seek out a better Toto album. ANYTHING is better than this. This is a dreadful Toto compilation. Avoid this like the plague. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Sad representation of a great band,
By

What a joke. "Live For Today", really? Obviously Toto had nothing to do with this release. 10 songs from a band that at the time was around for 20 years and over 10 albums is very sad. There are better greatest hits discs in the Toto arsenal than this. Your best bet is to pick up Toto IV, Tambu, Fahrenheit, The Seventh One, XX, and Mindfields for a good cross section of Toto. This amazing band cannot be shoved into a 60 minute CD. It doesn't do them justice. While Rosanna, Africa and Hold the Line are obvious masterpieces, the lesser know hidden material (Tambu in particular) really reflect the talent and mastery of Toto.

TOTAL TOTO,

Toto was one of the most under-rated and over-criticized bands of the 80's. Never mind the fact that they won a ton of grammys for "Africa" and the Toto IV album. Critics loved to say they were just a studio band, and that they were sterile and banal. Ha! Just listen to their hits---"Africa," "Hold the Line," "I Won't Hold You Back," "Make Believe," "Rosanna," "99", etc., etc. They are an extremely creative and tight, and gave us songs that will last much longer than the current fluff saturating the market. Toto is a great band and this collection of their super hits is top notch!

An underrated group in my opinion.
The stand out track in everyone's minds is "Rosanna". And, we know the story of the song. I really like several songs but my favorite is "99". I can listen to it over and over again. If you are a fan of the group or just a song or some songs you will enjoy this CD.

Banter,

I think the first reviewer got this right. its a budget cd that doesnt fill the disc at all, put out by the record company. these songs are the singles, which happen to be more ballad like than rock ones that most of their songs are. if you are a toto fan seriously look elsewhere (isolation, hydra, seventh one). if you are a new toto fan, also look elsewhere, unless you are like a top 40 party dj or something wanting the 'singles' theres seriously more to toto.

Not enough.....,

Not enough and too brief. This is an Incredable band! The only possibility of a true compilation of hits for this group would be a double CD composed of cuts from 1,2,4,7,8 Toto albums...and even then i don't think you would be able to cover all their great songs. Insuficient number of songs to fully appreciate the talent from this group.

good stuff,
This review is from: Super Hits (Audio CD)
Probably in part because of MJ's passing, there's been reflection on 80's music. Needless to say, I stumbled upon this. While the big hits indeed sound familiar, I may as well be hearing their work for the first time (because I honestly never paid attention to it before). Good stuff.
