Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2—When a ravenous T. rex shows up in Hal's backyard and threatens to eat him, the boy stands up to the beast. He not only refuses to be the dinosaur's snack but also denies the roaring beast's demands to devour his family and dog. The enraged dinosaur gives chase but the preternaturally cool boy eludes and then captures his pursuer. Forced to give in, the dinosaur tearfully promises to repair the damage he has caused and enjoys a spaghetti dinner to satisfy his hunger. Using multiple perspectives and cartoon panels on some pages, the sketchy, childlike illustrations in greens and browns perfectly match the text and make the theme of a brave child overcoming a giant obstacle resonate even more strongly. The text is perfect for reading to a group, one-on-one sharing, or storytelling. Kids who are hungry for dinosaur books will get a super treat with this title.—Marge Loch-Wouters, La Crosse Public Library, WI END

Well, if he couldn't eat a little boy, he could eat his mom or dad.

Dinosaurs are almost always a great choice for story time read alouds and originally I thought this one was perfect. The illustrations are very engaging and the super hungry dinosaur himself is just scary enough and just cute enough to strike that perfect balance. Hal is a great hero of the story, standing up to the great big dinosaur and telling him it's just not fair to eat a very small boy.

What makes this not so great as a read aloud is that in a few places there are just too many illustrations per page and the text is sometimes hard to follow from page to page. If it's read a couple of times, then it's great - but when you only have one chance, it can be kind of confusing. Parts of the story rely almost soley on the crowded illustrations to carry the narrative and it will take a bit of practice to carry that off in a group. Also, as a group read aloud, some of this text seems a bit too jarring; like when the dinosaur says "then I'll eat your mom" or "then I'll eat your dad instead". Now this all turns out fine because Hal and Billy triumph in the end and I think if you read it one on one with a child it will provide lots of fun scary thrills. It just felt like a bit too much for a group.

I really like this book, just not so much for group sharing.

Martin Waddell's THE SUPER HUNGRY DINOSAUR receives fun drawings by Leonie Lord as it tells of a hungry dinosaur who has come to eat Hal's parents and his dog. But Hal loves them too much to let them get eaten: can he calm the dinosaur before disaster strikes?

It's a very easy book for little ones to learn! My little guy has had me read it so much that he's reading it along with me each time. He loves the roaring :)

We checked this out from the library because my daughter (2.5) seems to have a thing for dinosaurs/dragons... she doesn't seem to know they are different yet. We read it everyday (at least once a day) for 3 weeks. We returned it and she wanted to get it back after about 3 days of letting "someone else have a turn." Needless to say, I am purchasing the book! It is a really cute read and very engaging to read aloud. Though my 2.5 yo is my oldest, I am sure this would be quite appropriate and loved at least to age 5. I will likely be gifting it to friends.
