3.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes too hard for younger players.
This game is fun, but, it is hard for some younger players (under 9). There are many different enemies and it is difficult to know when they are going to attack you. Sometimes, they are camoflauged which also makes it hard to defend yourself from them. Overall, I think this game is very hard for some younger players. You probably need to be at least 10 with some good...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best NES game of all time on the GBA, May 5, 2006

This review is from: Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 (Video Game)
Regarded by many as the best game to ever grace the original NES, Super Mario Bros. 3 gets shrunk down for the GBA, and it is all the more glorious all these years later, even on the small screen. Featuring re-vamped graphics and sound effects with the tried but true side-scrolling Mario fun, Super Mario 3 is every bit as fun as it was years ago. Fans who remember the classic game will remember the innovative power ups introduced here: the raccoon leaf, the frog suit, and plenty more as you take on Bowser's children and the Hammer Bros. as well as the usual cast of Mario villains. The level design has yet to be beat, and despite a few frustrations that are common place in the Mario series, the game is still a blast to play. All in all, Super Mario Bros. 3 is a must own for GBA owners and DS owners alike, and it's still one of the best platformers ever made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relive the adventure, November 27, 2004

This review is from: Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 (Video Game)
Though Nintendo had been the preeminent leader in video game systems since its debut in 1985, it was 1989's release of "Super Mario Brothers 3", the last of the original Super Mario Trilogy for the NES that sent Nintendo's popularity soaring into the stratosphere. A truly complex and challenging game, "...3" re-invented the side-scroller genre. Like so many longtime Nintendo loyalists, I have fond memories playing "Super Mario 3" for hours on end as I tried to defeat the bosses in the new and varied worlds like the Ice World, the Desert World, and the Sky World, to name a few. It took 14 years, but Nintendo has giving this seminal game a spectacular rebirth on the handheld Gameboy Advance System. While it is actually the fourth in the "Super Mario Advance" series for the GBA (preceded by Super Mario 2 [SMA1], Super Mario World [SMA2], Yoshi's Island [SMA3]), it is a complete port of "Super Mario Brothers 3". It is exactly as I remembered the original game, save for the ability to play as Luigi (in addition to Mario) and some spruced up graphics. The gameplay is a seamless re-creation of the original and it's simply amazing to be playing this marvelous game in a handheld format. The only port more astounding for GBA was "Super Mario World [SMA2]", and that was simply because it was from a more advance system. In addition to the wonderful nostalgia of playing "Super Mario 3", "SMA 4" also gives the gamer the original "Mario Bros" game to play individually or in multiplayer mode (all the "Super Mario Advance" games do this). While Nintendo has made some missteps in understanding its core fan base with its handling of its last two platform systems, the "Super Mario Advance" series, especially "Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3" shows that Nintendo still has an intimate understanding of what its fans want in a portable gaming system. BRING ON THE NINTENDO DS.

The Mario Bros. are back! And with more revenge. It certainly beats all other Super Mario Games by Nintendo. The story goes that the Kaopalings have stolen the magical wand from each world and have turned them into animals. The game is a pure thrill.I can guarintee u that u will enjoy it a lot.The levels are not so easy, not so tough. It's the perfect combination of skill and strategy. The Racoon and Tanooki Mario are super cool.I always enjoy throwing off the turtule shells into enemies.Thogh Mario is the main character,I prefer playing with Luigi too. This game goes to to The parent"s choice awards!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Finally Here!, October 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 (Video Game)
Mario 3 was my favorite video game growing up. But these days, my NES only works when it feels like it, and I never bought Super Mario All-Stars for SNES. Game Boy Advance is an awesome invention, and when they came out with Mario Bros. 2, I couldn't wait for Mario Bros. 3 to come out, because it's the best one. They just don't make games like this anymore!

First of all, the newer Mario games seem to forget about Luigi altogether. How much more fun would Mario 64 have been if we could play as Luigi?

Second, Bowser's children were a great addition to this game, and were what made this game and Mario World great games. For some reason, we never saw those 7 kids again. I'd love to see them again with the new graphics that gamecube has. To make an incredible new Mario Bros. game, all they have to do is basically take this game and make it 3D. People would buy it.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is also unique because it allows the player to keep items that they can use anytime during the game, so you can have the racoon suit or the fire flower anytime you need it. The racoon suit and the super leaf were the best items that Nintendo came up with for Mario. They should have kept that instead of the winged hat in Mario 64, or that jetpack thing from Sunshine. It just looks better.

Gameboy should really have another Mario game that keeps these elements and only changes the levels. Let's hope that Gamecube has a Mario game like this too.

5.0 out of 5 stars They don't call them "Super" for nothing., November 16, 2003
This review is from: Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 (Video Game)
Finally, the game that defined the early 90s has been re-released.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is by far the most fun Mario game I have ever played (with the exception of the Mario Party Series). It's awesome playablitiy set the standard for all the Mario games to come. It was so successful that it even stretched Mario into other media. For instance, the old cartoon series was based on Super Mario Bros. 3. For those of you who haven't accuainted yourself with this masterpiece, I'll explain...

You play as Mario or Luigi. Your job is to recover the magic wands from the Koopa Kids and return them to their rightful owners. Along the way, you'll use items such as the Fire Flower, the Super Mushroom, the Super Leaf (which gives you the ability to fly), and the Flute (which can warp you to distant lands). Players of the NES version will tell you that this game is no cakewalk. The only way I got to the final level was by using the Flute. But the difficulty was part of the reason why it was so much fun. It was hard enough to keep you coming back, but easy enough that you didn't give up in frustration.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is THE game to own if you own only one Mario game. Even today, over a decade after it first came out, it still is fun to play.

Super Mario Bros 3 was the best selling game of all time, and with good reason. It's a great game and is very challenging. The graphics are unbelievable(for NES in 1990), the game plays well, and, overall, it's just a good gaming experience. I wouldn't say that this was THE best Mario game of all time, it's certainly one of the best, but I think Super Mario World is probably the best. It just has more depth while not overwhelming the gamer. Overall, this is and excellent Stone Cold CLASSIC that you will love and is a wonderful introduction to the old great Mario games, before they got terrible Cough-Super Mario 64-Cough-Super Mario Sunshine-Cough

4.0 out of 5 stars Great port, but I was expecting more, March 14, 2004
By

This review is from: Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 (Video Game)
First, the original Super Mario Bros. 3 was a great game, and the original Legend of Zelda is the only competition for the greatest NES game of all time. This greatness is carried over well.

While is is more or less a direct port, the graphics have been improved (taken from the SNES re-release of the NES Mario games, Super Mario All-Stars), as well as the sound and music. Unfortunately, they also added in voices for the brothers. While novel at first, you'll start to get annoyed the hundredth time Mario exclaims "Oh, just what I needed!" when he picks up a mushroom.

My main disappointment lies with lack of extras. When a favorite movie is re-released on DVD, I've come to expect commentaries of some sort, deleted scenes, and a few other extras. I guess that doesn't hold true for videogames. Want to know what the great reward is at the end? Level select. That's it. You can warp back and re-play any previously beaten level. Somewhat of a let-down if you've just spent the last two days powering through to beat them all.

There are some extras, yes, but they're only available through the e-Reader add-on, and it also requires a friend with a GBA so you can link. Or if you're going it solo, you'll have to pick up an extra gameboy yourself just for this purpose. I haven't yet dropped the near-$100 to get these accessories, and I don't think a few extra levels are worth this great expense.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still Fun, After How Many Years?? (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars), December 18, 2006

I'm so glad they reissued this game on Gameboy Advance. I've owned this game in many formats, origonally on Nintendo. Then it was on the compilation of Super Mario called "Super Mario All Stars" on SNES. Now we have this on Gameboy Advance. Pretty much everybody has said all the great things about this game. It's still fun to play. Mario's super powers are awesome (racoon tail, frog suit, fire flower, etc.). Some of the levels are still difficult for me to beat, but it's always been like that for me.

There are a few things I didn't like. Ever since Nintendo as well as Mario have evolved, he's becomming a little more involved in the game. Now they have him talking in this game. That's not necessarly a bad thing, but if you had this game on Nintendo or even Super Nintendo, you would remember he didn't say a word. Here, he talks, like for example: when he dies, he say "Oh! Mama mia!" Or when you enter into a level, he says "Letsago!". I for one wish they didn't add that in this game.

Also this game comes with the arcade Super Mario game. Thats the game where you have two players, and those enemies come out of pipes and you have to hit the blocks under them to flip them over and kick them off the screen. It's kind of fun, although they modified it a little bit. Both games are fun to play, and I highly recommend this game to any gamer out there. This is one of the classic Nintendo games ever created.
