I want it badly... but I'm wary,

This review is from: The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (DVD)
Back in 1989-1990, there were five afternoon shows I watched all the time when I was a kid: Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers and Ducktales on Fox, while on KUSI-51 I watched the Jetsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the Super Mario Bros Super Show. Now, four of them have finally been added to my DVD collection, and I am partially awaiting the arrival of TSMBSS to include the fourth.
The show is one of my favorites. While half of it features various little live action skits featuring the Mario Bros. and various guests, from Sgt. Slaughter to Magic Johnson and even Inspector Gadget(played by Maurice LaMarche in live action... far better than the performance Matthew Broderick gave), with some funny plots such as Mario switching bodies with Frankenstein's monster or Luigi getting trapped in a magician's hat. The other half is animated, in which Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach... sorry, Toadstool, and Toad attempt to try and rid the world of King Koopa. The toons themselves were a bit of a merger of the first two Mario games. Koopa, for example, had Bowser's design and ego, but also had Wart's crown and color, plus Mouser(from the 2nd game) was his main henchman. The plots sometimes dealt with facing Koopa in the Mushroom Kingdom, but usually they took the plumbers and placed them in various situations: For example, movie parodies such as Indiana Jones, James Bond, or Godzilla, or homages such the group visiting Camelot... I mean, Cram-a-lot, or even prehistoric times. All the while Koopa would continue to menace the group under various disguises and alter-egos, similar to say, Boris Badanov from Rocky and Bullwinkle. Interestingly enough, some of Mario and Luigi's traits from the games, such as Mario's huge appetite and Luigi being a complete and total coward, actually originated in this show. However, I am worried on how the releases will turn out. Although it seems DIC, I'm worried if they will truly be the episodes I watched on TV all the time. One of the highlights of the series was that at some point in an episode they would play various songs, such as "Weird Science," "Thriller," or "Danger Zone". However, in reairings of the episodes(retitled, Super Mario All-Stars, which aired with the two sequels, Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World), as well as on their single-disc releases of TSMBSS, DIC completely edited these songs out. There's been no mention on whether the songs will be included for the 4-disc set, but I hope they are, because I want the episodes as they ORIGINALLY aired, not edited up. I contacted them and asked if they would be including the songs, but have yet to receive a reply. Here's hoping that the series will be restored on DVD the way it should be.

Great Effort Put Into DVD Release,
This review is from: The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (DVD)
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! is definitely a well remembered cult classic. The half-hour series was a combination of the live action characters of Mario and Luigi (and friends) and the cartoon characters. The cartoon featured many of the characters from the three Super Mario games released in the mid 80's. In the cartoon, Mario, Luigi, Toad and The Princess are often fighting the evil forces of King Koopa. Between 1985 and 1989 Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 2, and Super Mario Bros 3 were among the most popular NES games on the market.
The DVD box set includes 24 episodes from the shows 1989 season. The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! was a fun afternoon cartoon to watch in the late 80's and its nice to see such an unlikely release available on DVD. The episodes look pretty good, although some appear to have that grainy television look verses a real sharp DVD look at times. The packaging is awesome and colorful. It's great to have this show on DVD. Special guests include Cyndi Lauper, Nicole Eggert, and Magic Johnson. It's clear Shout! Factory put a lot of effort into this release. 5 stars for effort, 4 stars for picture quality.

Live action segments and missing music,

For the most part, the episodes are the way they originally aired - with the live-action MARIO BROS. episodes sandwiching the cartoons, as well as the commercial intros/outros.
Unfortunately, the cartoons are the 1990's edited versions. All of the songs originally in the episodes ("Bad", "Magic Carpet Ride", etc) were replaced by the instrumental portions of songs from "The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3" and "Super Mario World". I hope that at some point they rerelease this set with the original music, even if they have to pay royalties. I also hope that they leave the original music in "The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3" in place when they release that series.

While I am more of a Sonic fan these days, Mario was my first favorite Video Game hero. This show was how I first mainly learned about Mario (As well as the first (Super Mario, not normal Mario) game Super Mario Bros.) and everytime this show was on, I wasd glued to the set. When it went off the air, I bought videos I found (most of them are destroyed now due to accidental damage except for one). Then the Mario Mania DVD came out and I bought it on eBay from some fruad seller who never sent the item or responded to messages about it, I left negitive feedback to that person and reported him/her. Now this show is comming out on a DVD set with many great extras and I can finally see more from my childhood, this was one of the ways I first enjoyed Mario and this show also got me more interested in the games. For those who have not seen this 80's cartoon series and are Mario fans, just to let you know, this show is based the games Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2 (US Version) and Bowser goes by his original Japanese name in the show, Koopa. And also this show also has many parodies on many things, Jack and the Beanstalk, Sword in the Stone, Godzilla, RoboCop, and many other books and movies. This makes it more original (sorta except it's based on books and movies as mentioned) then the first two games in many ways and sometimes they showed some of the characters actions like in game play, even including sound effects from the games themselves.
If you are oldschool Mario fans or a fan of 80's cartoon series, get this one. If you have kids, this show would be a great show to entertain them as well since a lot of the stuff it has is kidish stuff.

I loved the Super Mario Brother's Super Show when I was a kid and now that it is comming to DVD that is great news. My only concern is that it doesn't include all 52 shows! What happen to the rest is there going to be a future release that the die hard fans can get I sure hope so.

OK, so they got the live segments, the bumpers, and the Zelda promos...but the cartoons are incomplete. In another instance of lawyers and copyright greed ruining everything, the original songs accompanying the climactic action sequences in the cartoons are replaced with bland and usually inappropriate instrumental substitutes. They didn't get the "rights." I now regret getting rid of my original VHS releases which retained the songs. For example:
"Pirates of the Koopa" originally had the song "Limbo Rock" by Chubby Checker. On this DVD release it's some completely scene-inappropriate instrumental music. And in "Too Hot to Handle" I believe the original song was "Hot Hot Hot" by Buster Poindexter. More like gone gone gone. These are just two examples but every episode is missing its song. The problem with this is the songs added to the overall quality of the show. As a kid, I knew that when the song kicked in, it was the climax of the show, and then the denouement followed. With these substitutions, the intensity of the plot arcs is less an arc and more of a flat line. The action sequences are arguably sequenced around different parts of the song. With a substitution, that subtle context is lost. The songs were fun! The limbo rock sequence is one of the most remembered parts of the show for me and now it's butchered. If you have ever seen the film masterpiece "Amadeus"...these omissions remind me of the ballet scene, when the emperor's decrees ban the music but not the dancing, so there are all these ballet dancers on stage with no musical accompaniment. It's awkward and strange. That's exactly what's happening here and on DVD releases of other old shows like Married with Children (iconic theme substitution). Copyright is ruining past shows and making them look worse than they were. Here we are paying for something instead of pirating it, and we're getting shorted! Puh-lease.

HEY PAISANOS!!,

This review is from: The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (DVD)
Well I was soooooo happy when I found out that one of my child hood shows were hitting DVD! So I went on here and looked at the reviews. I was a little scared at first to purchase when I started to see people saying that there were no live action segments. I thought to myself if the people who put this DVD were to take that out the show would't be a show at all because the live action segments are what made the show so intresting. So finally I took the bull by the horns and just went with my gut and got it myself. I have enjoyed this totally! I am 23 now and I was a kid in the 80's who use to watch this show and was a fanatic of the game and til this day I still am a fan of Mario! Everything was in this DVD. The live action segments and the full show they even had previews of The Legend Of Zelda to add that feel like you were watching just the way it was back then. I started to scratch my head and think where people were saying that there were no live action segments. It was all there! I do recomend to buy this DVD!! You will be fully pleased totally!! I am almost done with this DVD and I still need to watch the second volume which I will be rating as well!! I brought them both as a combo.

This review is from: The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (DVD)
Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Toadstool. The first installment of The Super Mario Bros Super show is here on DVD! I remember as a kid coming home from school and doing my home work. Then after that, it was the Mario Bros with Toad saving Princess Toadstool. I am so excited that Dic gave Shout permission to release this classic cartoon on to DVD. Lou Albano, (former Wrestling star) and Danny Wells, (cameo actor) do great voices of Mario, and Luigi. Jeeny Alice, and John Stalker do great voices for Princess Toadstool, and Toad. Harvey Atkins does a great job for the voices of the Mayor in some episodes. He also does great with the Koopa voice, and the Triclide voice. All of the animators did a very good job drawing the charactors from the game. Nintendo is an excellent company for giving Dic permission to make a cartoon out of the game. They did a cartoon based on the Super Mario Bros game, and Super Mario Bros two game. Wart was never seen in the cartoon. There are a few audio spots in the set that are noticable. One spot is in the episode, "Two plumbers and a baby." Near the end of the episode where Koopa says, "I'll be back to get you. When I grow up!" The sound is messed up a bit when Koopa is crying. The other spot is in the second full lenth episode when the rap is being played. You can hear a slight audio pop. It's loud enough to scare you if your not paying that close attention. Other then those two complaints? Best DVD set ever! Go DIC entertainment.

This review is from: The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (DVD)
I graduated high school in'89. Never saw (or heard of) this series being done. Here in '06 my 4yr old son (big mario bros game fan) picked this DVD off the shelf. Now I am absolutely hooked (and my son likes it too). This collection is hilarious and a must have for any lou Albano fan! Watching Lou act, sing, dance is hilarious and entertaining (just as he intended it to be). I've heard there is another volume to come out completing the whole series and I'm on board for that one fore sure! My recommendation for this volume? Get it & enjoy it!
