3.0 out of 5 stars Early CD-era oldies compilation, August 27, 2010
This review is from: Super Oldies of the 60's, Volume 2 (Audio CD)
In the early days of the CD era, many companies, large and small, produced CD's of existing LP or cassette products to exploit the market for the new medium. This series of "Super Oldies of the 60's" was one of those; however the CD's did not always exactly mirror the LP's.

This volume, number two in the series, gathers together 16 top-40 early 60's hits with most, save two, having made the top-20. Although these were all major hits in their day, some of the tunes included here are seldom found on CD reissues and therein lies the appeal. Alongside Del Shannon's commonplace "Hats Off to Larry" and the Chiffons' ubiquitous "He's So Fine", are found "Midnight Special from Paul Evans (of "Seven Little Girls" fame), and the G-Clefs' "I Understand".

Technically, all the CD's in this series reflect the early days of CD reissues. These tracks were mostly, if not all, taken from vinyl and reveal some surface noise on some tracks. On the positive side, they do not seem to have been subjected to attempts at "cleaning up" and therefore do not exhibit the overly compressed sound found on some CD's in the market. Having been taken from masters destined for vinyl pressings (with the high end pumped up to compensate for the high-end loss when going to vinyl), some of the tracks exhibit more volume at the upper end.

In this particular volume, all the tracks are mono or electronically rechanneled with the exception of track 12. While not technically in the class of Ace, Bear or Rhino reissues, the CD's in this series do offer fans of the genre a few hard-go-find tracks (that are becoming harder to find) in the waning days of the music CD format.
