Editorial Reviews

"In Super Overdrive Live" was filmed at the Congress Theater, Chicago for the US TV series Soundstage and originally broadcast in America in July 2009. The show sees Billy Idol, with trademark sneer and peroxide hair very much to the fore, reunited with guitarist Steve Stevens, who played on (& sometimes co-wrote) all his eighties songs. The track list runs from early Generation X hits, through his classic solo singles and up to tracks from his most recent album "The Devil's Playground". Idol is a fantastic live performer who oozes onstage charisma and the audience rocks along to every minute of this mesmerizing concert.

Lineup: Billy Idol (vocals); Steve Stevens (guitars); Brian Tichy (drums); Stephen McGrath (bass); Derek Sherinian (keyboards)

TRACK LISTING:
1) Super Overdrive
2) Dancing With Myself
3) Flesh For Fantasy
4) Touch My Love
5) White Wedding
6) Scream
7) Eyes Without A Face
8) Cry
9) Blue Highway
10) Ready Steady Go
11) Rebel Yell
12) Kiss Me Deadly

I first saw this performance on the PBS series Soundstage and was completely blown away. Billy sounds better than ever and has incredible energy and charisma. The band are phenomenal too, especially Steve Stevens on guitar. The concert was filmed in high definition so this blu-ray should look and sound superb. This release contains three additional songs that were not shown on PBS.

The one huge problem is that several of my favorite Billy Idol songs are not included. "Hot in the City," "To Be a Lover," "Sweet Sixteen," "Mony Mony" and "Cradle of Love" were all performed the night this show was recorded but were left off! Here is the track list:

Super Overdrive
Dancing With Myself
Flesh for Fantasy
Touch my Love
White Wedding
Scream
Eyes Without a Face
Cry
Blue Highway
Ready Steady Go
Rebel Yell
Kiss me Deadly

Originally filmed for the US television series Sound Stage and broadcast in July 2009, this 70-minute, 12-song DVD showcases Billy Idol in concert at the Congress Theater in Chicago, IL. At 54 years of age, Idol is arguably in the best shape of his career. Not an ounce of fat can be found on his chiselled, sweat-soaked body. Alongside his partner in crime, guitarist Steve Stevens, drummer Brian Tichy (Pride & Glory, Gilby Clarke) keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Alice Cooper, Dream Theater) and bassist Stephen McGrath, Idol truly is one of a kind. He introduces `Rebel Yell' as "The New American National Anthem." Despite the fact that `Dancing With Myself' and `Flesh For Fantasy' are `80s staples, Idol has his band jam on them in a free-flow format that makes them seem fresh as the morning dew. Two brand new, previously unreleased songs are performed as well: the sexually charged `Touch My Love' and a more remorseful number `Cry'. It's a pity that only a pair of songs from 2005's Devil's Playground are aired live, as that was a barnstormer of an album. But we're treated to renditions of Generation X classics `Ready Steady Go' and `Kiss Me Deadly' - all you can ask for is more, which isn't unreasonable actually. There's no backstage, pre/post show footage, interviews or bonus material. But in this case it's quality over quantity and the focus is solely on the top-notch live performance.

At His age, Idol blows away young rock bands and its not even close..WOW great show.. Idol's band is awesome...Top notch performers all around...Sadly though only half of the setlist was included in the setlist, the show was actually 2 1/2 hours long not measly 75 minutes...I wanted to see more and more..Great live concert well worth the price...

I saw Billy Idol on this tour live at the Turning Stone Casino in Oneida, NY. Though I recommend this DVD for all Idol/Stevens fans, I was disappointed that a large part of the show I saw was missing. Even reviewers of this Chicago show mention this fact. I was really looking forward to performances of 'Evil Eye' and 'Rat Race' and also the amazing duel guitar solo battle between Steve Stevens and the drummer (who left his drum kit and picked up a guitar.) I have no idea if this was on the SoundStage special. I am hoping that there is an expanded version of this concert in the works, 70 minutes is definitely way too short. Might as well call it an excerpt. All this aside, it is still a rocking DVD.

This is a fantastic concert, the information included in the package does not give the date of the concert. But, after watching it, I do think it is "fairly" recent, but I'm not sure. In the 1980's, Billy Idol, had his sister, playing keyboards in his band and she is not included in this concert dvd. The information does state that it was filmed in Chicago's Congress Theater in July, but it doesn't list the year. The Concert is mostly "Hard-Rocking", but it is "Partially Smooth" at times, depending on the song. The total running time is approximately 70 minutes.

The line-up:
Billy Idol - Lead Vocals
Electric Lead Guitar - Steve Stevens
Drums - Brian McGrath
Keyboards - Derek Sherinian

The Song Set:
1.Super Overdrive
2.Dancing With Myself
3.Flesh For Fantasy
4.Touch My Love
5.White Wedding
6.Scream
7.Eyes Without a Face (Partially Smooth)
8.Cry
9.Blue Highway
10.Ready Steady Go
11.Rebel Yell (Hard-Rocking!!!!)(At the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, on the second floor, between the bar and the slot machines, there is a display of Billy Idol & Rebel Yell, it includes a guitar, with the body of it, painted as a rebel flag, I have a picture of it.)
12.Kiss Me Deadly

This is Billy Idol and Band at their best, and I recommend it. Thanks!!!

Billy Idol moves fairly fast through his twelve songs on this blu-ray. It's quite different from a previous DVD that I have of him, in which he is quite chatty in between songs, with his telling of personal stories about his songs. On this one, talk between songs is minimal.

Irregardless, whether on this blu-ray or the previous DVD, he sings well, is enthusiastic, and still looks amazing, in excellent health, and in good physical condition.

I'm not exactly a hard rocker, but this would probably satisfy many Idol fans.
