Super Pet My First Home Tank Topper

I'm really surprised that large chain stores don't carry this product. This is the best housing solution for Syrian hamsters we've found in years of looking. Combine this with a $10 glass aquarium and its the cheapest as well. Plastic "...trail" products are not durable, are a pain to assemble and hard to keep clean. Metal cages are durable but expensive and not as flexible. What we've done is combine Crittertrail parts with the platforms that come with this kit to get the same effect as a larger all-plastic cage. As for those who complain that the shelving gets chewed...um, duh...thats how these little guys explore their surroundings and that also tells me you aren't offering them an alternative to help wear down their incisors. Cleaning this setup is a snap, the cover comes off in one piece--along with any attached shelves & parts--giving you easy access to litter for changing. Housing potential mates next to each other allows Syrians to interact a bit without sharing the same cage--preventing fights b/w incompatible suitors. The biggest drawback to this product is the tendency for Syrians to "pitch-their-poop" if their on the second floor--but training them to use a corner box in the aquarium can minimize "collateral damage." Finally, rodent urine will eventually lead to rusting of just about any cage, but repaint & seal with quality non-toxic spray paints and you're good to go.

I bought two of these for my kids hamsters and the one hamster does great climbing and doing everything the cage is for. The other hamster fell off the top when she started sliding and refused to go up again so now the cage is in the basement.
Its also not as easy to get to your hamster since if she is in the tank you can't just open the top and reach in unless you have super long arms so you must remove the entire top which for a kid can be tough. I worry that they will not hook it right and it will get knocked off and the cats will have lunch.
Often the hamster food ends up all over the place too since its set in the top part and if you are not completly steady it spills.

I would have given it 5 stars but my gerbils chewed the house up within a week or two and now after a couple of months they no longer have ramps. Currently, they're working on chewing up the shelves.

So I'm off to buy one that's entirely wire. Wish I had done that in the first place!

Great idea, but the plastic in the ramps and platforms isn't going to last much longer with my gerbils...they have chewed completely through one ramp and one platform. This would be a much better product if the ramps and platforms were made of a different (harder) material, or of wood. (The wood to give the gerbils something HEALTHY to chew on) Would be better if it came with an extra set of ramps and platforms until then.

This is exactly what I was looking for! It doubled the area for my rat to play in, fits perfectly on the 10 gallon tank, and she LOVES it!

This is a nice topper, but I was concerned about my hamsters falling from the top so this is what I did ~ I bought some hamster tubes ( I used CritterTrail ones) and a tank screen cover, the kind with two holes with covers that come off so you can put the tubes in those. I got the screen cover at walmart for 8 bucks. Anyway I put the screen cover on the tank, put the various tubes (took some time to get the tubes snapped together right) through one of the holes and ran the tubes from the bottom of the tank to the top of the screen cover, then I put the tank topper on like normal, the screen cover does not interfere at all with the tank topper. The bottom ramp lays on top of the screen cover and it works out well because now the topper has a floor and I am not worried about them falling and getting hurt or possibly dying. Also adds more space for my hamsters to walk around and I think they like climbing up the tubes.
It takes a little adjusting with the tubes to get it right and where its easy for them to climb up to the top, but its worth it. I thought it might help those with similar concerns about their hamsters, mice, gerbils, falling.
I wanted to add that if you didn't want to use the tubes there are other screen covers that have doors in the middle of them that you could just run the bottom ramp through. I imagine there is a way to use any screen cover.

We ordered the Super Pet My First Home Tank Topper when my son was going to purchase 2 pet rats. We have never owned rats before and wanted to make sure they had the proper amount of room without having an oversized, hard to clean cage. This looked like a really neat idea so we purchased it. It arrived promptly, was easy to assemble and fits well on a standard 10 gallon aquarium. Really quite an ingenious idea. Our rats love it and have not chewed on the ramps. We installed a little bed up on the platform by their food bowl and they are quite at home in it. All in all, a very good product.

Whoever thought of this is a genius. Your hammy/gerbil will have so much fun running around on the ramps and sleeping in the house. The plastic is thick and high quality. I can't imagine it being chewed through by my hamster. If so, it would definitely take a while. I highly recommend buying this product over the fancy cages with tubes and parts galore. I've had those cages as well and they are a pain in the butt to clean. Stick with an aquarium and this cage topper.

Our "teddy bear" hamster grew too large for his starter cage. We looked at new cages, all of which were very expensive. We decided on the tank topper to use with an aquarium we already owned. For the price, it is the cheapest way to get twice as much space. It comes with a water bottle, food dish, house, 2 ladders, name badge, and 3 platforms.
The items are only able to be arranged as the picture shows due to the length of the ladders. There is an opening at the top of the cage which allows you to change the food and water. There are also clips on each short side of the cage to secure it to the aquarium. The clips undo easily to allow for cleaning; the platforms and ladders lift with the cage.
We added an additional water bottle on the top food platform for ease of filling and an attachable wheel at the top of the first platform. So far, our hamster loves it, especially the house. Be advised the ladders are rather steep; the first few times he opted to jump off the top rather than use the ladders (luckily it was well padded!). Also, when attaching a wheel or additional accessories, some parts of the cage are quite flimsy. Although a hamster/mouse/etc. would not be able to escape, you can bend the cage as you are attaching items to it. Overall, well worth the price.

The product is as it appears and is terrific. It is much easier to clean this cage (compared to the plastic cages made of wire and plastic tubes).

It is fun to watch our hamster exploring around the cage. The only downside is that he spends most of the day inside the blue "house". We don't see him as much as we used to.
