2.0 out of 5 stars Only for the most devoted of JRPG gamers.
This is a game I loved in the beginning and began to get bored with by the end. The game features a unique fighting system that will have you dishing out awesome combos with highly detailed 2d sprites, and a goofy storyline that is worth a few laughs to anime fans, but be warned, the humor of this game is pretty low brow stuff. The game quickly starts to wear thin when...

This is one of those games that, despite it's flaws, is worth playing for what it is. And it's a halfway decent JRPG with a somewhat interesting fight mechanic and awesome character design... which is basically Trigun-meets-Mobile-Suit-Gundam-meets-Girls-on-Trampolines.

The humor and overall vibe of the game is something that is distinctly Japanese, and the developer didn't change a thing. So the story doesn't make a whole lot of sense, everything is over-the-top, the dialogue is in Japanese, and yes - the heroines of the game have bouncy Anime boobs. But it was meant to be more funny than anything and blessedly - the game never takes itself too seriously.

I've never played any of the other titles in the series, and I bought this b/c I was looking for a new DS game and the trailer looked fun. And the game is fun. Atlus delivers a unique experience that is certainly worth your time and money.

The gameplay is simple and the battles are fun. The sprite actions and animations are nifty, silly and often times full of boobs. The only downside is that they are repetitive...but then again - it's an RPG, so...uh...yeah.

If you've seen the trailer for this, and thought to yourself "Hmmm...that actually looks like it might be worth playing." I can tell you that it is.

Is it going to blow your mind because it's the best game ever?

Nah. But the point is - it doesn't need to. It just needs to be fun. And it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very stylish JRPG, November 29, 2009
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier (Video Game)
Super Robot Taisen is a very fun game. The battle system lets you set up combos with each character, where pressing the 'A' button executes an attack. Pressing it again will cycle through a list of up to five different attacks, and with the right timing, they can all be chained together. Each character has their own unique set of attacks, and each character's list can be customized however you want. The different characters also learn Spirits (the game's version of spells) that can be cast each turn before attack, and a set of Special Attacks, which can be used instead of attacking. Your characters and the enemy are all very well drawn and animated, and a number of attacks actually have special hand-drawn animations for each character.

There's only one complaint I have about this game: breasts. I mean, I like them and all, but they're absolutely everywhere in this game. Nobody's nude, either; there are just lots and lots of anime girls with almost disturbingly well-drawn chests. The special animations during battle for the well-endowed women are just as well-drawn as the rest, but their boobs are center-frame, bouncing everywhere. I get the feeling it's parodying cartoons and games where "sexy ladies" are a selling point, and it does this very well. Just don't let anyone look over your shoulder at the wrong time and get the wrong idea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!, May 14, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier (Video Game)
Having been a fan of the Super Robot Taisen series I was expecting another strategy rpg game, but to my surprise it turned into a mix between tradition turn base attacks and active time battle. Pressing the A button at the right time allowed the hits meter to increase causing more damage and also help build your overlimit meter(super move) faster. As what the product description said this is really intended for mature players. Also for you purist who hates english dubs in their jrpg games you'll be glad to know there is only the japanese dialogue for the voice-acting. A refreshing new battle system and the storyline is quite entertaining, give this game a try if you like role playing games or animes and catgirls with a hilarious storyline intended for mature gamers. Forgot to mention great graphics as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars I almost missed this one., May 23, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier (Video Game)
The censored cover caused me to nearly miss this. I mean, they don't even show Kaguya's cleavage like they should.

Anyway, I'll keep this short and to the point. Super Robot Wars is an ongoing anime series, and this game is a distant offshoot. It has characters from Xenosaga in it, and is an attempt to cross worlds for a common goal. I won't spoil things, but everyone has a purpose here.

Previous games on GBA were strategy RPG's; this one is a traditional RPG, 2D, with brief animations. You control Haken, a playboy-type character who uses guns and swords interchangeably, and dresses like a cowboy. You are accompanied by Aschen, an android with a rather unrealistic body who you've known for years. Neither of you remembers how you found each other or why you've stayed together, but you are bounty hunters looking in ancient ships and ruins. You eventually will stumble across your other characters, who all have stories that revolve around the main storyline.

To bullet this out....

** PROS **
- The game is easy to get into. There are no complex or touch controls; everything is controlled with the various buttons. There's even a brief tutorial if you need to know how to do something.

- The combat engine is quite engaging. If you're good enough, and have enough characters, you can unleash combos that reach into the double or even triple digits, juggling opponents in the air for extended periods.

- The character development is moderate. It's not as strong as other games such as Chrono Trigger, but each character has enough of a story that you won't ever get confused why certain characters are there.

- New Game Plus, when you defeat the game. You don't keep levels though, only your cash and the majority of your items.

- The dialogue. It's a throwback to the glory days of Working Delays...err, Designs. A lot of cornball humor, with some not-quite-suitable-for-kids humor. One character gets constant jokes about her massive breasts. Another gets infrequent quips about her flat chest and tummy. There are others, but you get the idea.

- The graphics. They're simple, but effective. They didn't go overboard and try to make a 3D engine or anything; kept it as simple as possible.

** THE CONS **

- This game should have been on PS2. Period. There was so much potential for other things like anime cutscenes and full voice overs.

- The game is actually easy, but the bosses for some reason are ridiculously overpowered. I don't mean the damage they do to you, I mean the damage they take from you. You'll unleash combos dealing massive damage in the 6 figures, yet it's barely a scratch to their HP bar. All after you got done destroying regular enemies in the same dungeon/castle. You could be level 99 halfway through the game, yet a single combo won't kill some bosses. It just doesn't make sense.

- The relationship between Haken and Kaguya is almost forced. There's no real development up to it - Kaguya expressing her feelings to Aschen, or something. It just happens near the end of the game (can't spoil it).

- It's never clear that everyone needs Haken. In fact he's treated as though they don't really want him there, with the exception of Ksguya. Even Aschen throws the occasional insult, and she's supposed to be essentially a family member.

- It's way too easy for the enemy to do "Forced Evasion", which is a counter opening. As you juggle the opponent, if they touch the ground, they can cancel your combo midstream and then counter attack. The problem is three fold - one, you can't do Forced Evasion when you're getting juggled. Two, the enemy can do it all the time, breaking your combos too easily. Three, sometimes the computer can do it without touching the ground. Really frustrating.

- Discontinuity with characters. You'll encounter characters that you have to fight that then help you. Later, you're back fighting them again. Then they're helping you again. It's really dizzying.

All in all though, good game. I just wish it were a full console game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier, September 14, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier (Video Game)
Well, it's your basic JRPG, but solves a lot of the problems I've had with the series. It's got a great battle system, that's very skill based, so you feel more like you're getting better as a player, not just adding numbers to your stats. Besides that, every character joins in the battle, so you're incentivised to level them all up evenly, which is good, because you'll love every character. The story's also good, revolving around your 8 characters searching for answers to things like these gnarly crystals forming everywhere, crashed spaceships, some evil kitsune chick, undersea ruins, and other unique stuff like that. Also, the game doesn't take itself too seriously, there's a lot of humor to be found, and it serves to make the characters (even more) likable. If you like JRPG's or anime influenced games, I strongly reccomend this.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Review of Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier, September 28, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier (Video Game)
If you've played Super Robot Taisen OG and OG 2 then you're a bit familiar with the franchise.
This is not like that because it's not an RTS. Endless Frontier is an RPG and you play the protagonist Haken, a Cowboy Bounty Hunter, who is partnered with Aschen, an android.
They search a ship where they were found 20 years ago and discover a girl and from there what becomes a simple mission to take Kaguya (a princess from another world that is on a pilgrimage)back to her home to having to save all worlds from the Mild Keil crystals that have been messing up all worlds. I don't want to risk spoiling the game for you all, but it does have that SRT twist.
The music is great and fans from the other installments of the Super Robot Taisen Franchise will recognize them and the references to the other games. The battle system involves attacking using combos that involve timing, once you get it down you'll be beating enemies quickly. There is voice acting, but it's in Japanese so all of you otaku out there will love it for that alone.
This is a crossover game, so I won't spoil the characters for you, but there is a special feature that if you have Super Robot Taisen OG or OG 2 you can insert that in your DS when you start a new file on Endless Frontier. I don't own those games so you'll have to find out for yourselves.
The only problem I have with the game is that the TRUE enemies you have to fight later on though they fit with the game aren't nearly as good as the others that could have been in it like the Shadow Mirrors. That and it seems like you get caught into a boss fight for everything, which though funny can get old.
Still if you are a fan of the franchise or want a fun RPG to play, pick this one up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, September 17, 2009

This game was an impulse buy from a store that always has the "shovelware". This was the only copy, the T rating (I don't usually buy games that are under T or M) pulled me in, and the game description pushed me to buy it. The game is great. The other reviews touch up on all the good points, and there isn't much else to say besides this game is definitely a good time filler. My saved file shows I've put in 66 hours of gameplay. It doesn't seem like it, but it is probably right. Because I spend my time grinding out levels before I hit the next area, just to make progression easier. I haven't compeleted the game yet, but I'm enjoying every moment of it.

Game comedy, and the innuendo are great. I find my self chuckling every now and then. The only reason I didn't give this game 5 stars is because I wish there were some anime cut scenes. And, yeah, the "overpowered" bosses are a bit irritating, and the forced evasion is frustrating.

The gameplay is more action based than you would expect. The constant fighting between characters and innuendos make most cut scenes hilarious. Not as much fun the second time around but the unlocked bonus is pretty cool.

4.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing JRPG, but not for everyone., May 6, 2009

This review is from: Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier (Video Game)
Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier, try saying that one ten times fast, I dare you! This is by far one of the longest game titles I've ever seen, with Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha versus King Abaddon, being another exception, although also a game published by Atlus! But I digress, to keep this in the vein of this new and refreshing JRPG, I'll try to explain to you why I like this game, and make a pathetic attempt to not sound like a pervert.. *ahem* This game is definitely not for everyone, and first and formost I'd like to say the amount of blatant sexual innuendos and fan service shots, is over the top to say the least. Now if that is your thing then this is the game for you. Now you're probably thinking to yourself, 'yeah, but why would I buy this game, since there are like a million other jrpgs on the DS?' this is very true, there has been an explosion of jrpgs lately for this little system, but it's a good thing in my mind. Well, what really makes this game stand out, is it's battle system, and it's light hearted humorous story, and for me this was a breath of fresh air. The battle system really does do something new, while it still plays out in turn based attacks, it utilizes a combo system, that is almost rhythm based, there is a intensity and speed to the battles that I really love and enjoy. It's a juggling act really, and you'll find yourself adjusting the skills and order of things in your party to perfectly string together a perfect combo, in order to get bonus xp, and also to fill up your gauge bar. Now once the gauge bar is full, you'll then max out and be able to pull of a overdrive move that really is amazing to watch. Aside from the refreshing game play, the rest of the game plays like your typical jrpg, with a world map, dungeons, various towns with inns where you rest and upgrade etc.. So far I've played 10 or so hours into the game, and it's held more than my attention with its beautiful roster of characters, sorry perverted, awesome mech designs, innovative game play, and pure tongue in cheek sillyness. I wanted to give this little game some credit before it's washed away in the sea of DS shovelware (Yes I'm looking at you Dora the Explorer) Show some love to your underdog unknown developers and pick up this game. On a last note, obviously this is a game for a niche group of creepy otakus, you know who you are. But who knows, this game just might appeal to more people if they give it a try. ;D

Thanks Atlus, keep the good games coming!
