5.0 out of 5 stars Knitted Monsters! October 4, 2012
Format:Paperback
It seems like there are tons of books with cute little creatures for those who crochet, but not nearly as many for those of us who knit. Well, Hrachovec does it again with her third book that is just as cute as all her others.

All of the creatures are gauged for an intermediate level knitter, but basically if you know how to knit with double pointed needles you'll be fine.

The best part in the book is the monster maker section which shows you how to make an assortment of different bodies, appendages, and facial features. The neat part is it doesn't put them together for you in an exact pattern-- you get to construct them however you desire! The possibilities are endless!

Lastly, as she made famous in her last book, Teeny Tiny Mochimochi, there are some adorable patterns for fingering weight yarn. I'm in love with her little witches design and her zombie pattern.

Seriously, who wouldn't want to own this book?!

5.0 out of 5 stars So many creepy cuties! September 27, 2012
Format:Paperback
Super-Scary Mochimochi is Anna Hrachovec's third book where she shares patterns for adorable knitted creatures. This new book came out just in time for me to knit up some scary, cute fun for Halloween and it has over 20 ideas to make. I had a hard time getting the book away from my daughters, they sit and squee over all of the "cute and creepy creatures". The author has a really great, quirky style and she turns out darling monsters, werewolves, spiders, minitaurs and more. It's such a modern, colorful take on an age old craft and if you are new to knitting (or just want to brush up on it, like me) there is a large help section in the front with all of the basics. Super-Scary Mochimochi suggests knitting the characters in the round to allow for minimal seams and recommends double pointed needles for this. There are lots of large photos showing this and other techniques in detail.

One of the best things about these knitted cuties is that they give me a way to use up my leftover yarn, as they all only take a small amount to complete, especially the teeny ones. Also, if you use thinner yarn and needles, you'll produce smaller beasties, with the opposite being true for larger ones. I enjoyed the fun Mix and Match section, where she breaks down the various parts and lets us decide what kind of monster we want to create and also get to add fangs, a mustache or even a clown nose to our creations. The Mama Bear Cave is just delightful, with Mama Bear holding her tiny cubs in her mouth-cave and the Zombie Sleepover is just freakishly adorable, but I started out with the Bitty Witches, because I thought they would be a fun decoration for the trick or treaters. I really love Super-Scary Mochimochi and I'm looking forward to see what else the author produces in the future.
