A Super Slam is an awesome accomplishment!,

To be honest, I wasn't very thrilled reading this book. The adventures he writes about are awesome, but pretty much the same as in his autobiography "Life at Full Draw." I'm not sure why I was disappointed; it may be because much of what was written in "Life at Full Draw", was also included in Super Slam. I highly recommend "Life at Full Draw," because it tells a lot more about the life of Chuck from boyhood through his Super Slam!

This book is a must have for bow and gun hunters alike. I would love to someday complete the North American 28 but right now don't have the time or money. This book gives me hope because Chuck did most of his hunts on his own. He's a great bowhunter and storyteller. His accomplishments afield are second to no one. This books tells about it all.

Until reading this book I had only been exposed to Chuck Adams and his legend through the writings of others about him, or through his magazine articles. SUPER SLAM is everything that I hoped it would be. As a hunter myself and one who hunts with a bow from time to time, I especially appreciate the dedication and effort that go into having a successful season hunting even one species (such as white tailed dear in my case). The fact that Chuck has successfully accomplished this feat on so many occasions with so diverse a list of animals in so many different and difficult locations is not only an amazing feat and a dream of a lifetime for most serious hunters, it is also an amazing fact that he has accomplished this and remained such an humble story teller. His writing style seems to reflect the appreciation that he has, not only for his quarry, but also for the fact that he has personally been given this wonderful opportunity to accomplish the "holy grail" of bowhunting. This is an amazing read about not only an incredible lifetime journey, but about an equally amazing, studied, humble and appreciative man. I feel this is a must read for any hunter, whether bowhunter or not. We can all learn and be entertained by Chuck Adams' SUPER SLAM.

Super Slam!: Adventures With North American Big Game is a narrative of expert bowhunter Chuck Adams' experiences with game animals ranging from Black Bears to Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Lions, Canada Moose and much more. A thrilling true-life narrative of braving weather, terrain, natural hazards, and more to test one's skill against the wiles of wildlife, Super Slam! an enjoyable, brisk-paced read for armchair travelers, dedicated hunters, and anyone wondering what it is truly like to stalk game without a gun.

I was disappointed that the great adventure of hunting 27 "big game" of North America was reduced to a tedious chronicle where you can almost substitue the 27 different animals into the "story"....how the guide took the hunter to the hunted and an arrow was shot killing the animal.
I can imagine the experience and knowledge that Chuck Adams has to have to be able to hunt these various animals with a bow and arrow and was hoping to "feel" excitement of the pursuit, the description of the dangers involved, the details of the hunting experience with a bow but alas all I got was a monotonous style of writing describing how he arrived, saw and shot. Tedious reading. If you really want to read a good book about bow and arrow hunting, read the Field Notes of Fred Bear, well written, detailed and it lets you feel the hunt, written by the hand of the master bow hunter. |
