About the Author

Stephen Young, Ed.D., recently retired form a 35 year career as public school teacher and professor of education at Morehead State University. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from MSU and Ed.S. and Ed.D. degrees from Indiana University in Instructional Systems Technology. In addition to two novels in print, he is also the author of a manual for decision making via critical thinking and a CD of humorous storytelling. His hobbies include singing folk music, woodworking, and maintaining hs Web site.

"Super Smart" couldn't be a more appropriate title or description for this new educational workbook. The first thing you notice is that this textbook is different---it's smart, entertaining, academically challenging and it's engaging. Containing 180 multi-topic exercises, Dr. Young's book is intriguing---from his introduction to an examination of how he formats exercises and the content he chooses to present. "Super Smart" is conceptually creative, drawing on Dr. Young's skills and experience as an educator and his appreciation and practice of the value of humor in the classroom and our lives. Stephen Young demonstrates that textbooks can be fun by seamlessly weaving education and entertainment---the result is an effective classroom resource that will likely ensure academic success for those utilizing it.

Young includes "Words of the Day" (each illustrated with an amusing black- and-white picture), "Thought of the Day" (such as "It is observation, not old age, which brings wisdom"), logic puzzles, mysteries to solve, word games, riddles, math games, and card tricks, and much more. Organized on a day-by-day basis, each page full of entries for mind-stretching are designed to quickly get students into a contemplative mindset. My daughter-in-law is teaching a fourth-grade Gifted Class.

As this is her first year, I found this book for her to

get some ideas. She has implemented many of the activites

and her class loves them.
