The Best Shoot 'em Up on the PS3,
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Super Stardust HD [Online Game Code - Full Game] (Software Download)
Super Stardust HD is the first download game I purchased from the PSN Store over 2 years ago and it remains my most played PSN title. The reasons will be apparent to anyone who gives SSHD 5-minutes of playtime - amazingly refined controls, bright graphics, intense gameplay and a sky-high fun factor.Instead of a traditional side-scrolling shooter, SSHD is a top-down shooter that takes place in orbit over various planets. Moving your ship in any direction is possible though ultimately you're just moving around the planet. Think Geometry Wars but with a larger scrolling map. The objective of the campaign is to clear each planet of asteroids and other various types of enemies, ultimately fighting and end-boss and moving on. Various other game modes are available including Endless, where you keep destroying asteroids and enemies until you die; and a co-op multi-player mode is available for purchase as separate DLC. Asteroids come in 3 varieties: rock, ice and gold. At your disposal are 3 different weapons which as you may guess specialize in destroying the different types of asteroids. As you destroy asteroids power-ups are dropped making your weapons stronger individually. Leveling up your weapons is key to surviving later levels where the action is intense and the entire screen full of asteroids and enemies. As you destroy large asteroids they break apart into smaller meteorites which spin-off in random directions. SSHD is a game that definitely takes advantage of the PS3s particle effects processing power, filling the entire planet atmosphere with spectacular effects and showering sparks from your weapons as you destroy enemies and asteroid alike. Virtually infinite replay value is present in the form of simultaneous co-op multi-player, online leader boards and game modes like Endless. Some of the high scores posted from around the world are something that truly require masterful skill of the game. The controls in SSHD are a high mark for simplicity and effectiveness. The left analog stick controls your ship while the right stick controls your weapons. Switch weapons with the L1 & R1 buttons and double tap R2 to use boost to quickly move away or smash through enemies and asteroids. Perfect. SSHD is one of those rare gems where you feel that you've just gotten the deal of the year - $10 for a game of this quality is a rare thing. Take advantage and download this game!

Super Stardust is a fun Asteroids type with smooth and challenging game play and spiffy graphics. But it's when 3D mode is enabled that this game really comes into it's own. The overall sense of depth is amazing and the fireworks like explosions that come out of the screen will have you saying "wow" many times.

For some reason, I wasn't that impressed by the demo of Super Stardust HD when I tried it out last year. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for crazy shooting fun at the time, but when I was able to pick out my two free games after the PSN fiasco, I decided to give it another shot. After all, I wasn't losing anything. Good god did I get hooked on this one the second time around. Super Stardust HD is the best remake of Asteroids ever, whether or not if that's what it was trying to be. This is a beautiful game with booming audio, and truly feels like an arcade shooter, not just some wanna-be like so many others before it.The game consists of a handful of planets to play through, with you controlling a ship that needs to blast huge chunks of rock, various aliens and other enemies that show up now and then. There are three different kinds of rock: regular rock, gold and ice. Your ship just so happens to have three different weapons: a rock blaster, gold melter and ice breaker. Additionally, the ship has a limited number of bombs that can be used to clear the area, and a boost feature that lets you escape danger for a second. A level is cleared when the key enemies have been taken out, and you'll earn power ups in the process. Upgrades for your weapons, extra bombs, a shield, extra lives, and more points. The game starts out easy enough, but everything gets frantic in no time, with enemies and rock pieces flooding the screen like it's going out of style. And of course there's a boss at the end of each world that requires some great reflexes and maneuvering if you're going to make it to the next stage. One thing I love about this game is how you fly around the planet instead of being placed on the planet, scrolling from left to right. It makes it feel more like Asteroids coming back to where you were and having the pieces of rock still floating around until you've blasted them away. The three weapons you have are all unique, though most people tend to prefer the gold melter because it can save you when surrounded by enemies just by spinning around. It's kind of like the Proton Pack stream from Ghostbusters. The other two weapons are useful (they kind of have to be if they're all for specific kinds of rocks!), but I'd focus on upgrading the gold melter first. Saving bombs is a good idea too, as there are several portions to each planet, and if you use them all up on the first or second sections, you're toast when the later stages come up. The tiniest pieces of rock can take out your ship with one hit just like the big ones, and unless you have a shield, you might be restarting the level when you die once or twice on the first second. I'm not saying this is a perfect game, but there's nothing bad I can say about it! It's cheap, has high replay thanks to the co-op modes, has one of the more competitive scoreboards out there, and is always fun even if you're just going to play for five minutes. Controls are simple since it's just a twin stick shooter, and nothing's ever complicated. If you're looking for a game to test your reflexes, go for Super Stardust HD. It's not one of those memorization games like Ikaruga, but more of a classic arcade shooter. Heck, let your parents give it a shot if they played Asteroids back in the day and see how they do!

An Incredible Next Gen Arcade Shooter,
By
This review is from: Super Stardust HD [Online Game Code - Full Game] (Software Download)
Robotron 2084 + Smash TV + Asteroids + 3-D spherical plane + Crack + Melted Fluorescent Crayons = Super Stardust HDThat is the equation I would give to Stardust HD. Gamers who grew up feeding an addiction to pouring a fortune's worth of quarters into arcade machine shooters like Robotron 2084 or Smash TV will absolutely love this gemstone of a downloadable title. It features the control scheme and general premise of Robotron 2084, where you control the ship with one analog stick, and the direction of the fire with the other. It's a much deeper game than that old Atari classic, however, as you also have three different gun modes to choose from, the possibility to upgrade said weapons throughout a gaming session, helper items like shields and bombs, a huge variety of obstacles and enemies who each are totally unique, and a rechargeable shielded boost ability to get out of sticky situations. These additions add such depth and variety to what is already an incredibly fun and addictive premise even in its simplicity. The well-beloved developers HouseMarque did an awesome job on this title in more ways than the gameplay too. SSHD shines and bursts with buckets of polish. The screen flashes and explodes with bright neon colors. Like the old arcade shooter classics, this game is also addictive. You could easily spend hours on the same stage in this game and still be craving more Super Stardust HD. It really is excellent. The music is of equal caliber, and thank goodness, because you will end up spending a tremendous amount of time in each stage of the game if you're skilled enough (or determined enough if you keep losing. I know I was). The sound effects are equally charming as they harken very much to old classic arcade machines. This game will appeal to those who love old arcade classics. Those who are busy and want to just be able to pick up and play without being tied down to a deeper, more involved game should also get this immediately. It really is a sterling example of taking a 30+ year old video gaming concept (we're going way back now) and adding the type of detail and excellent ideas that you find in the video game generations since then. I highly recommend getting this game, it is absolutely excellent. Buy it, boost n' blast it, 'SPLODE IT!

This is a very addictive and fun game. If you liked geometry wars you will like this game. The game plays like a modern Asteroids, you have one ship with a gun that you control with the right analog stick and shoot rocks to protect the planet you are in. once you hit these rocks they break apart into smaller rocks and so on and so forth. Inside some of these rocks you get bonuses, like weapon upgrades, points, bombs and 1ups. You have 3 different guns, a regular rock crusher (green colored), and Gold Melter (red colored) and Ice Splitter (blue colored). Each of these weapons are designed to take out specific obstacles, you use the green one for rocks the red one for ships and gold rocks blue for ice and far obstacles. You also have a rechargeable boost which moves your ship a short distance away from your location while protecting you from the obstacles. There are no life bars, once you get hit once by a rock a ship or incoming fire, you lose a life, unless you find a shield, which will only protect you once from a hit. Obviously the point of the game is to survive as long as you can, the longer you stay alive you get a points multiplier. There are 5 different planets, each with different obstacles, enemies and a boss fight at the end of the level. The levels are shaped spherically; you control the ship around the outside of entire planet in any direction dodging and shooting rocks and incoming fire. You cannot control the ship to get closer to the planet or further from it, you always stay at the same distance away from the planet. You can play the game in arcade mode or play each individual planet so long as you unlock it by defeating it. You can also adjust the level of difficulty on the game, to easy and normal. When you first start out the game can be overwhelming, but soon you get used to the controls and the different weapons you need to choose depending on the enemy or obstacle. There are many trophies you can unlock on this game without having to purchase the extra downloadable content, although the downloadable content has trophies too. Some are as easy as defeating a stage and some are hard like getting 5 shields while having one already. In my arrogant opinion, this is a very fun shooter, a throwback at the old 2D games like Asteroids presented to you with beautiful colors and graphics. This little game is very addictive for some time and while you won't play this forever, it is definitely worth the 10 dollars they want.

This shoot em up game is one of the most intense, addicting games I've played this generation. It plays like Geometry Wars but you are on a three-dimensional surface, a globe, so you can infinitely run away or chase down enemies/debris in any direction. The game makes use of multiple weapons which can be upgraded by picking up powerups dropped by debris. The weapons are element based and destroy certain debris quicker depending on the weapon you use (for instance, Gold Melter quickly blasts away gold). There are various enemies and bosses for each level, and the game has so much replayability. There are many modes including Planet, Arcade, a multiplayer mode, Endless, Survival, and more. This game is easily worth the $10 or so it costs and will keep you reaching for higher scores and trophies for a long time.

I just wanted to second all of these other reviews. I've played this game more than most of my favorite full-priced games. Simply addictive with beautiful explosions and, well, stardust. Most fun I've had blowing s@$% up since Twisted Metal 2 on playstation 1.

If you have a PSN account, there is no reason not to get this game. Buy it. Now. Seriously! This game is a classic arcade-style shooter. All you have to do is survive a constant barrage of asteroids, explosives and enemies by blasting your way through it. You have four weapons at your disposal, and you get an assortment of power-ups throughout each level. That's pretty much it. The result is a severe, nonstop blast of action that you won't be able to put down. The sound effects are top-notch. If you have a surround sound system, it's pure gaming bliss, especially if you turn it up LOUD! The HD visuals are fantastic. The music is wonderful, exciting and atmospheric. I can't say enough great things about this downloadable gem. Get it now! There's also a PSP version of it called Super Stardust Portable. 5 stars!

This game is fun and fast-paced, but somewhat stressful. If you like the chaos of facing an impossible number of foes or the quick-thinking of cause and consequence required of tetris than you will enjoy this game. If uncertain, try the demo available through the PS3 store.

I purchased this game so I could try out a 3D game on my new 60" LCD screen. My boyfriend and I were instantly addicted. The game is just challenging enough - not too much that you give up and not so boring that you lose focus and zone out. It's great that you can play with two players and the 3D is well used for this game. Playing on the 3D globe was hot!I definitely recommend! |
