Top 5 DS game for me.,

This review is from: Jump Super Stars (Japanese Version) (Video Game)
OK the game is in JAPANESE! Do not buy this product if you aren't willing to play from a FAQ or you don't know at least basic katakana. This game will NEVER come out in the United States or in English because it is a licensing nightmare here stateside. Atari, Bandai, Natsume, and Ubisoft (just to name a few) all have rights to various series' in the game so in order to see this come stateside all of these companies would have to work together. So don't hold your breath, buy the import because it's all you'll ever get.
The way you play this game is pretty unique, you use the top screen for all of your fighting and such and the bottom screen is kind of like a comic book page. As you progress through the game you collect tons of tiles to fill the comic book page with. They come in 3 different varieties (Support, Battle/Character, Assist), but of these 3 standard varieties there are also multiple tiles of one type but of varying power. For example, all of the character tiles, or koma as they are known in the game, are at least 4 individual squares in size but can be up to 7 in size. So you can choose to use 4, 5, 6, or 7 square Naruto as a character and the moves are for the most part different for each different koma. So not only are there a ton of different characters present but there is also several variations of most of them which adds a large amount of strategy to assembling your comic book page. To assemble your comic book page, the only stipulation is that you have at least one of every type of koma. So you must have at least one of an assist tile (1 square), support tile (2-3 squares), and a character to use (the 4-7 square koma). I generally like to have a good mix, but once you meet the requirements there isn't much stopping you from having upwards of 5 battle characters on your team. This can be advantageous in multi player battles simply because you have a team size advantage. The depth doesn't end here though, depending on how you position certain koma they may boost the powers of another koma. For example, plopping a Sakura support koma, next to a Naruto character koma will increase the attack power of Naruto. You're given enough space to use several of each type of koma which can be activated by touching them during battle, or in the case of character switching out. Support koma will launch a single attack at the expense of certain level of a "Super Bar" which you build up from taking and dealing damage a la Marvel vs. Capcom 2 when activated. Assist koma will either give you some stat boost or an enemy a penalty, these statuses can be anything from blanking out their screen, flipping their comic page, boosting your speed, slowing the enemy... There's a ton of them. This brings me to the items, the items aren't like weapons like you would see in Super Smash Bros they simply act as a bonus to your stats or a negative status effect both of which you can inflict on yourself so watching where you are jumping around is critical. The battles take place in sort of a comic book page as well. Initially you are boxed in to the environment but if you hit somebody hard enough in to a wall they will burst through it and break the page. There's quite a few levels to compliment the many characters. The game itself is played by traveling an overworld map with various points on it kind of like Super Mario Bros. 3. Each level will have a certain objective to pass it which can range from not taking damage for a given amount of time to simply beating the crap out of everybody. I would say there's about 50 different objectives throughout the game and this is where knowing katakana comes in handy. I know Japanese, but I was still forced to consult a game FAQ at Gamefaqs because some of the objectives are simply too hard to figure out. The game is totally doable though with zero Japanese, you'll just have to follow a guide to the letter. Overall this game is dang awesome. The shear number of tiles to collect keeps you playing it and the depth of assembling your team will have you making comic pages over and over until you find something you really like. I highly recommend this game to anybody who likes a simple intuitive boot party on the go.

If you get this game I strongly urge you to also get Jump Ultimate Stars. It even better and it has more characters and komas to unlock, but the main highlight about Jump Ultimate Stars is.... ITS WI-FI!!!!!!

Jumpsuper Stars for the Nintendo DS could be best described as a more complex version of Super Smash Brothers, expect with popular manga characters from the Shonen Jump Magazine. This game is easily for fans of the Super Smash Brothers series. The game play is very similar, expect you can switch between characters at any time, and there is a health bar. The touchscreen is used to switch characters, and use very few special attacks (i.e. using a combo special with two or more characters, using a non-playable character's special ability, ect.) The game uses a panel-like system to set up the characters for your deck. The panel system for the decks is similar to a puzzle. You fit the panels representing the characters and fit them in. In other words, you can customize your deck with addition characters, more specials, or decide to mix-and-match the two for your perfect deck. As mentioned earlier there is a health bar, however, you do not need to defeat an opponent like you would in Street Fighter. You have the option of knock-outs like how the Super Smash Bros. series is known for. There is multi-player in the video game, both consisting of single and multi-card play (note: only multi-card play enables you to use decks against an opponent, single-card play is random characters and panels.) The content of the game is heavy. There is a six to eight hour story*, and enough objectives to total the game play easily to twenty hours. This includes unlocking variations of characters (in which it changes up specials and stats,) more specials, and effects to use on other opponents. Also note to unlock characters you must combine characters with panels and this can be difficult (even with a guide.**) The downside of the game is it's not very import friendly. The game uses almost exclusively uses Japanese text, but thanks to the internet there are guides to translate everything for you. It's possible to beat the game without guides, but I do not recommend this if you are planning to get everything. Other things to note are the difficulty spikes in some missions are not fun (like not getting hit, and such) and that leads to the "less-then-joyful" part of the game (don't worry there's plenty of fun remaining.) But aside from the difficulty spikes the game really is not too much of a challenge to any decent Super Smash Bros/fighter player. Overall, the game is great, perhaps even one of the best fighters on the Nintendo DS. But the game is not import friendly, but once a guide is used, the game itself expands so much. In other words, get this game if you are into Super Smash Brothers, or itching for an excellent fighter on the DS. I give this game an 9.0/10. *Note: I cannot comment on the story since it will have some spoilers. **or just try at random, or use the character guide like I did and check them off as you go. |
