4.0 out of 5 stars A true SF classic, but could've been better !, July 14, 2002
This review is from: Super Street Fighter II (Video Game)
Growing up, the Street Fighter series has always been my favorite ever since I first played SFII on the SNES. During the early to mid '90s, the Street Fighter II series have sold like hotcakes. Put a few copies of any kind of SFII title on your store (Whether it's the original Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II Champion Edition, Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Fighting, or Super Street Fighter II), and people will rush over to get their hands on it. Yep ! They're that good ! When Super Street Fighter II came out as the last SFII game for home consoles, fans agreed, it was the best fighting game they've ever played. However, there were some noticable flaws on the game that even starters of the series can recognize, but all in all, one of the best 2D fighters out in the market. Like any good SFII title, Super Street Fighter II's graphics still looked brilliant and smooth. The character animations and backgrounds, as well as the new ones, still retain its old glory from the original 1992 and 1993 releases, even on the Genesis version. Now they used the real anime art as featured on both the VS and Fighter selection screens. Not to mention, the opening looks great and better than the last SFII titles. When it comes to the audio, this is where the real problem begins ! The voice acting of Guile, Dee Jay, and the announcer really sound laughingly horrible ! This is something that Capcom shouldn't have done in the first place. If it hadn't been for the horrible voice acting on those guys, then it would've been the best since Street Fighter II Turbo. Some sound effects have changed, but not completely ! But on the plus side, the music sounds great with the unforgetable classic SFII tunes and some new ones. The gameplay is still great ! As always, anything with the name SFII has amazing gameplay balance than any other 2D fighting game. The most exciting thing about the gameplay is that all of the classic characters have new moves, but most of them are enhanced, like Ken's flaming Dragon Punch (better known as the Shoryuken), and for the first time, Ryu's Hadouken can burn people when you do half circle motion on your controller. The only drawback on the gameplay is the fact that you have to switch moves during play, if you have the standard issue 3 button Genesis pad. With this controller, you have to press start if you want to switch to punching mode or kicking mode. The only way you can play the game without having to switch moves is to get a 6 button pad. And come to think of it, I don't think a pause button exists as long as you have the 3 button pad. And as for the selection of characters, you still get some classic numbers like Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Zangief, Dhalsim, Blanka, Guile, Sagat, Vega, M. Bison, and Balrog. Plus some new characters like Cammy, a young british girl on a mission to stop the evil M. Bison and the Shadowloo organization. Fei Long, a martial arts movie star with unsurpassed Jeet Kune Do skills. Some say that he's a Bruce Lee wannabe, but he does a good job at it ! T. Hawk, a powerful and strong native Mexican. And finally, Dee Jay, the fastest and fiercest Kickboxer of Jamaica ! So many good fighters, so little time ! So in conclusion, Super Street Fighter II is a true fighting classic on the Genesis and the SNES ! Although the SNES version proves to be better than the Genesis version, the Genesis SSFII proved that it could be a true fighing powerhouse in its own right ! If you still love playing fighting games on the Genesis or the SNES, you should know by now that your old school collection of games aint complete without any of the Street Fighter II series or Super Street Fighter II. This is the game that should not be left out, if you're thinking about buying an old Genesis or SNES ! So do yourself a favor and buy this game...if you can find it !

4.0 out of 5 stars classic fighting, November 6, 2011

This review is from: Super Street Fighter II (Video Game)
This game is one of my favorites in my genesis collection, I got it back in the day on the release date for I want to say somewhere around 60+ dollars. I had been a big fan of the other street fighter titles and had spent many a quarter playing this one in the arcades before the release date. It was an awesome game on the genesis so long as you had the six button controller (anyone playing fighting games on the genesis without one is insane lol), great variety of characters compared to the earlier titles. The voices on the genesis port were lacking, but IMO the awesome gameplay and graphics for its time made up for that. I was young when I was playing these games, but still own my genesis collection and still play em from time to time, a must have for any classic fighting game collector. I still have this one, SF2 champion edition and all the mortal kombats, as i was a fighting game fanatic and still am. If you never played this one and are looking to expand your genesis collection, I strongly reccomend it!
