SPOILERS

I am a fan of the Street Fighter series, and have purchased the 3 prior Ultimate editions produced by UDON.

The events of this series occur after the Street Fighter II series; comparing the booko to the video games, this would be Street Fighter III.

As Amazon's descriptions states, with Shadaloo having been defeated in the Street Fighter II comic series, the world has been relatively at ease. However, behind the scenes a new villainous society has formed to threaten the world, the Secret Society. The Secret Society is targeting street fighters around the world for purposes unknown, and Guile means to find out why.

Frankly, not much happened in this volume. There were a couple of short fights, but it really felt like a reintroduction to what the returning characters have been up to and an introduction to some new characters. The book has a list price of $35 for 144 pages, and at least 20 pages of that is character sketches and artwork.

I'd give this volume 2.5 to 3 stars. Not my favorite volume.

After the sheer glory that were Udon's "Ultimate" SF Books, capturing the entire SF Udon storyline from the the original SF through SF2, and then the tiny but pleasant morsel that was the Udon SF4 comic, I was rather sad. I mean, these are comics so good that, to me, they have become the "canon" storyline (and if they aren't - they should be!)... and now they were over? Parting was truly the sweetest sorrow.

No way did I think Udon would be GENIUS enough to procede to tackle the greatness that is Street Fighter 3, with it's avant storyline that drops most of the known characters from 2 to flash forward into the future where the fighting is just as hot but the stakes are even higher.

How wonderful it is to be wrong sometimes. Udon has taken the SF3 storyline, retrofitted in some of the SF4 characters (makes sense, 4 occurs before 3 in the game continuity), and continued one of the most beautifully drawn comic series I have ever enjoyed. Finally a chance to learn about Guile and Alex's connection, about Urien, his "divine" brother Gill and their Secret Society, and especially about to what heights Ryu and the evil Akuma have taken their arts.

That said, the volume is a bit light - as others have mentioned. This is essenitally the first volume of a trade paperback series that they made with a hardcover instead, so it's a but pricey for how short it is comparatively, but take it from me - Udon has done SF justice and that hasn't changed with this new series!

And one last thing - a big thanks to Chris from Udon who I mailed asking about when Volume 2 will be out... nothing is "official" yet but let's just say I'm REALLY looking forward to fall in 2014!

Background: I love everything street fighter. I play the games, every incarnation. I enjoy all fighters SF, Tk, KI, MK etc... I'm a comic guy, I like them no matter the publisher. I own all the other Udon SF comics, even the Japanese ones. Now the Verdict.

Super Street Fighter Volume 1: New Generation gets a 3/5 stars from me. Its good but not that good. The art is well done by MULTIPLE ARTISTS and not just one. Its 144 pages but the book has about 20 pages of art in the back. Im not mad at the art but i would have liked additional Street Fighter 3rd Strike characters. The art is drawn in big panels which takes up multiple space that normally would be for more panels for fighting art. Do i feel cheated...no...but i would have liked more effort. It just makes reading the book doable in 10 minutes. Udon struck gold when they had the first 2 volumes of SF. Udon's SFIV comics fell flat. This new series just manages to keep its balance. The amazon price reduction is warranted because there is no way the hardcover asking price of $35 is worth it but a $19 sale is something id waste money on.

If you want to read something better than this recent iteration, try these:
Street Fighter III: Ryu Final, Vol. 1
Street Fighter III: Ryu Final - The Manga, Vol. 2

Both of these gets a 5/5 from me.

This book features great artist, and some very nice short stories that almost any Street Fighter fan can enjoy.

My only complaints are in the area of writing. Since Udon's Street Fighter Universe stands on it's own from the game cannon some features in this book are different. While most of the differences are only in story presentation in the means of adaptation to the comics. It bothers me when the core characteristics of a character are no represented correctly. There are a few instances where characters behave out of line with what is established and it bothers me.

The biggest example of this is M. Bison's portrayal in the book. Where he is seen serving under another character. This is a big conflict in the core essentials of the character that bother me as a fan of the series.

Other than that I enjoyed the art, and side stories over the over arching story presented in this volume.

The delivery came earlier than expected, and was waiting with high anticipation. Me being a street fighter fan since the classic era (late 1990's) and have played all games as well as read all comic books, i quite enjoyed the book but overall was okay. It started off good but middle towards the end wasnt the "whoa" factor. It could have been better and longer too since half of the book is just artwork:( And if everyone has noticed, the comic is drawn paint style, like the turbo, not the bad ass detailed pencil style in previous generations. Only the first part of this book is pencil as it flashbacks to previous timeline but turbo onwards all paint:( I would recommend this book to street fighter veterans and fans but definitely not to newcomers because of the price.
