A 70s Jazz-Funk Classic,

This review is from: Super Strut (MP3 Download)
There is a bit of disconnect with this song. The Fender Rhodes piano intro is soft, simple, and its pace connotes a cool strut--some would say a super strut--albeit an uptempo one. But once the rest of this band kicks in, especially that rumbling bass line, there is no more strut; it's pure fuzzed-out guitar and fat horn coda rock for the next eight minutes and forty seconds.
This is a fantastic tune, unfairly lost for too long. Great to see it resurface on the Grand Theft Auto Vice City soundtrack, so a new generation can be exposed to it. There's a great cover out there by the Kashmere Stage Band, their "Kenny Dope Remix...lots of rockin' horns. Bottom line: this is a lost classic from the early days of rock-goes-fusion, where guitar mechanical and electronic experimentation led to new sounds, melded with new types of arrangements. It's rock, it's jazz, and it's a long, simple jam that is fun to listen to, and even more fun to play along with. |
