STT is Veronica Mars meets 90201 meets Dawson s Creek meets Revenge of the Nerds all wrapped up in Super Teen Topia. It s not Generation X where the kids in school all run off in their costumes to beat up so-and-so and team-up with Howard the Duck. We meet our stars of the book in issue 1 and know right away that by issue 5 they aren t going to be off in costume fighting Galactus. Super Teen*Topia is something I didn t think was even possible anymore a new angle on superheroes that doesn t sacrifice the elements that make the genre so much fun in the first place. Today's industry has a growing number of titles focusing on teen heroes, and it harkens back to the early days of the super heroes comics. Titles like X-Men, Amazing Spider-Man, and Teen Titans started out by focusing on the younger generation of characters in order to appeal to the audience that was buying the comics at that time. Today's audience consists of somewhat older readers, but the number of younger readers is slowly increasing. Super Teen*Topia seems to have the right ingredients to reach the younger audience as these titles before them. Like I said, today's industry is slowly harkening back to the glory days of comics and Super Teen*Topia is hoping to tap into that glory. There are a lot of books over the years that have come out where readers are just thrown into the middle of things and are eventually given the history of the team. Super Teen*Topia doesn't leave the readers behind; we're invited along for the ride from the beginning. I think Kushin and Gonzalo have done a pretty effective job of enticing readers to try out this new series and come back for more. Kirk Kushin is the creator of Super*Teen Topia, as well as Dr. Chaos and B.A.B.E FORCE. Both series met with acclaim in the indy comic book market. Super Teen*Topia: Invisible Touch is the first collected edition of his work.
