To be compared to a Mack truck is a term of deepest respect in the construction and trucking trades. It means you are sound, durable and willing to carry your share of the load. It is also a term of endearment among people who use their muscles for a living, a point I learned very quickly when I joined a construction crew right out of high school.
This book is a fascinating visual retrospective of the Mack trucks built in the years from 1926-1938, and you can appreciate the ruggedness of the models. Most depictions are posed for show but there are a few taken on the job. The men who drove them worked hard, but in their line of work, it was the truck that was the true laborer and that fact is clear in these photos. If any brand of truck could sweat, it would be the Mack. |
