Editorial Reviews

Review

  • "God, Satan and the author fight for control in this fun and dramatic memoir . . . Any woman who has struggled with the ups and downs of being an independent, overworked and underappreciated superwoman may see herself in this well-written and inspirational memoir." ~ ForeWord Clarion Reviews

  • "A woman's faith is sorely tested in this sprightly, tragicomic novel of redemption . . . in Hynson's deftly comic prose, Lori is a charming protagonist . . . As readers watch her do battle with God, they may not be able to help siding with the underdog. A winsome, entertaining and occasionally inspiring story of bad thins happening to pretty good

From the Author

I was the ultimate SuperGal - dynamo, achiever, well-organized, a community leader, and supremely independent. A fixer, I spent 31 years trying to hold together my teenage marriage and two kids, attempting to be all things to all people while pursuing my own dreams. I was a smiling SuperGal to the world; a resentful Shadow Face at home - angry, bitter, resentful. Finally, alone for the first time in my life, I cherished my newfound freedom from emotional bondage.

I thought it was MY job to run this planet. All by myself!

Believe me, I wasn't looking for love until the very moment I was shocked by a gift of love I never saw coming. From a sweet man who began to paint for me the canvas of how real love should look. I had no idea. Slowly, my icy fears melted away.

But within weeks, my joy turned to despair when he fell desperately ill. Then he got worse, then even worse, and stayed that way. In typical SuperGal fashion, I rolled up my sleeves and went to work. I would fix this, too. I simply had to, and I would do it all on my own. I couldn't bear to lose him now, not after waiting my whole life.

God, you see, wanted me to turn to Him for help and to trust Him. But I wouldn't. I couldn't. I hardly knew Him. After all, He was only a Sunday Acquaintance.

Yes, this SuperGal could handle anything that life threw my way. Booyah!!
Well, until I couldn't
Until one tragic night, my SuperPowers utterly failed.
Until finally, God had me right where He wanted me!

Through rage and despair, angels and messengers, to miracles, surrender and redemption, my life was changed forever.

God bless!  xo Lori

5.0 out of 5 stars SuperGal vs God by Lori Hynson August 5, 2014
Format:Paperback
“I was pleased with the bold decision I had made all on my own.
God raised one eyebrow.” –Lori Hynson

Lori Hynson was the SuperGal of the century organizing all types of events and excellent at performing these tasks until “she sensed something – someone?...Like God?…He seemed to be there, on her mind.” Lori had taken on the world organizing several programs and special events with her take-charge temperament expecting perfection from everyone involved including her own self. You know the type of person who leads a group on a special project delegating responsibilities to people to complete said assignment and when asked a question or a problem occurs thinks ‘do I have to do everything myself?’

Lori openly discusses her definition and adventures of a SuperGal who came to recognize that she could not manage anything pertaining to her life as wife and mother and an organized leader of individuals without assistance from others and learning to lean on God with whom she needed to re-establish a connection in her life and daily activities. SuperGal Hynson deals with a broken marriage and her renewed faith by joining a gospel church with a predominately-black congregation taking into consideration her love of gospel music.

The SuperGal leads you into her personal struggles and triumphs journey of an I-can-do-it-all-myself boa feathered diva with reality situations, enlightening discoveries, and spiritual humor. Most women will recognize themselves in this memoir at one point or another and laugh aloud while reading Lori’s interpretation of God and His thoughts throughout her journey as I have often had the same interpretations. I recommend to women and men alike for a refreshing look into the life a real SuperGal diva that made it through all her challenges.

I received this book free from the Book Crash reviewer program in exchange for an unbiased opinion in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission guidelines.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Truly Remarkable Book! August 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
What a lovely book! It’s not many times I come across books that are unique in presentation—this one is one of the few. The blurb and author bio make it clear it’s a non-fiction memoir, but it is, however, written in fiction fashion. The style of writing is absolutely clever, witty, humorous, confrontational, and very engaging. There was never a dull moment in this book. At some point I questioned if it was truly a non-fiction because of how well Lori knitted her story—concentrating on the meaty, juicy stuff that created an interesting and poignant picture. The story was intentionally directional in the lessons Lori needed to learn in her walk with God, so that, I, the reader, was carried along. I saw so much of myself in this story—learned some of my mistakes, misconceptions etc—and was inspired and blessed by it.

What a truly timely read!

This story teaches that God is FULLY in control, and that the devil has absolutely no say in your life, if you don’t let him. Never have I read a book that presents God as so big, and the devil as so small. This story reminds one to trust God absolutely, and be grateful for everything no matter the circumstance. A truly wonderful and inspiring read. So glad I read it!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I received it free in exchange for an honest review.

At first, I thought I would tire of sentences repeatedly starting with "Super Gal" and then "Super Gal" this "Super Gal" that, but I actually didn't. "Super Gal" was in the place of "I" this or "I" that, and it was quirky that she came across as a person and not a persona. I found the writing style delightful, it was as if you were in the story and could picture Super Gal running around here and there, doing this and that. I often laughed out loud at the names of characters - Dr. Surgical Fellow, Dr. Big Gun, Dr. Next-Fellow, Dr. Big Cheese, Dr. Surgical Resident, Young Doc, Ms. Social Worker and the name of the hospital - Ginormous City Hospital. Such names are names we would actually call someone in our head and here the writer is using them as actual character names! I really liked that.

The story is about a woman, Super Gal, who slowly comes to know who God really is not just in a "sing about him in church way," but who He is in her heart and life way. I enjoyed watching her faith and trust grow. It was a difficult journey with all that was happening with Ben, and I found myself wondering if I would have had the tenacity Super Gal did or even the fortitude Ben had in constantly struggling to survive. This story made me think a lot about life and how much would I be willing to sacrifice in my own life to help someone else. I related first hand to Super Gal's BenMail. Many years ago, I received such emails about a friend of a friend of a friend who was in the hospital and likely to die - and in the end God saw fit to heal him. Ben's story was indeed miraculous and showed the power of prayer.

SuperGal vs. God
By Lori Hynson
ISBN 978-0-9890790-0-6

“Prideful – Successful – Stressed Out. She could do anything, but felt the pressure to do everything. Find new love begins to change her heart but what happens when that oy is quickly followed by tragedy and her SuperPowers fail?”

Like it says on the back cover, 2 parts memoir, 1 part fiction, 1 jigger of love story plus a dollop of humor equal SuperGal vs. God.

I have to say that when I first saw this book, I thought… oh how fun. This looks great. Thinking to myself… how bright and cheery the cover is all pink… almost sparkly. I thought, this would be a nice change.

I was not prepared for the story inside. Don’t get me wrong; this is a wonderful book, written by an extremely talented writer. Her tongue-in-cheek humor will make you smile and giggle at times. And her command of language and words, will make you cry, and cheer, and laugh, and pout and get angry. You will run through all of those emotions.

But what I wasn’t ready for was the actual story. This story was a mirror of my own life. With a divorce in the early 2000’s… to a new love and remarriage… to his fatal illness in mid 2000’s. Ironically, while her story played out at the end of 2005 – early 2006 in Philadelphia… my story played out at the same time in Tennessee. She so captured the emotional roller coaster that you jump onto when someone you love knocks on deaths door and all your superpowers can’t fix it.

Be prepared, this is a heart wrenching and at the same time a heart-warming story of love, joy, tragedy, battles, miracles and messengers. A story you don’t want to miss.
