An enjoyable follow-up,
By John the Italian (Central Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: SuperHealth: 6 Simple Steps, 6 Easy Weeks, 1 Longer, Healthier Life (Hardcover)
I went straight from the original SuperfoodsRx to this book, which I now see as the former's legitimate sequel.
The first thing I noticed was a slight change in tone. The information's still there, and even though the original wasn't a problem in the "dry"ness area, this has been combed-through to make it over in an even more universally accessible image. My initial fear was that I'd plunk down the money the day this came out and it would be more of the same with everything else added for filler (a concern a few folks had with Healthstyle, which I believe was the actual sequel that introduced the newer foods). I was pleased to find that's not the case. If you're looking for more of the same, in a sense that's there, because most of the big mention of the Superfoods themselves in the first part of the book, except in greater detail about the processes at work in the body and what exactly these different nutrients are doing for you. It's a fascinating presentation of the body and its systems, when that's discussed, even after a high school biology and college anatomy/physiology class. It's also highly motivating to find out because many of the "features" of these foods directly affect me (the role of lutein in the eye, for example, and its relevance to the thing most of us have to look at more now than we have previously). But the biggest perk this time around is the formatting. This is the Superfood gallery, practically applied. Aside from daily meal planners, that do the work for you and shake up the types of foods you get in each day to achieve each benefit, the low-commitment exercises are truly things you can squeeze in with no excuses into any routine. What's more, the theme of being well-researched continues this time around and if the easy descriptions don't sell you on exercising the facts and figures put forth on just how much doing the SLIGHTEST amount of work will save your [...] will. The reference section towards the end is also very handy, breaking up information by nutrients, ailments, you name it. The shopping lists are there as well. I rated this a four only because it was over pretty quickly (like its initial predecessor, this is a lightning-fast read: your free time for three or four days and it's done) and that might turn people away for 25 bucks (what we paid retail), if they can't get use out of the reference. It's a good solid idea to pick up at 17, especially when you can supplement in the original for just another 7 or 8 bucks. Also, truth be told, I was expecting some serious recipes. There are foods used here that weren't in the first book, or on the website, and that's nice, but the marketing made me feel it'd be a bit more exotic or at least more hands-on. Superfood is abused as a term nowadays. When you tear out all the marketing and scheming and fads and people talking out of their rears, you end up returning to this series. It's a simple as eating the foods and knowing you're doing well for yourself.

This book takes nutrition to a new level. I now make better choices and know how these food work biochemically to create better health. It is easy to read, easy to understand and filled with sucess stories. Due to health problems and medication, I have had a hard time loosing weight. After 2 months on this diet, I have gone down a size, when no other diet worked. It has been effortless to follow and I really enjoy the food, knowing I am doing something good for my body. I will eat this way for the rest of my life.

The first thing that I want to point out is this is not a diet. Diet's usually mean food deprivation. SuperHealth is a system / lifestyle. It's basically a reworking of the food pyramid using food science. In 4 weeks I have lost 12 pounds with minimal effort. You just have to plan to go to the grocery store 1-2 times a week and buy the products on the list and eat them in a balanced way daily. If you love to cook it does give the challenge of a "Chopped" episode, because you are trying to figure out how do I use these 3-5 ingredients in meals for the day. My only criticism of the book is that much of the same information is repeated in different chapters.

Super Foods,
This review is from: SuperHealth: 6 Simple Steps, 6 Easy Weeks, 1 Longer, Healthier Life (Hardcover)
Info okay if you are a beginner to nutr/health...yes eat the top benefitical vegs/fruits...BUT if I ate the jelly, etc. he talks about eating, I would be 200 lbs. I bought these JUST TO get a lot of info on combining resver/quer/soy/D for new found weight loss. Wish there was more in book on that. That put him on map.
A note too - soy ruins our thyroid - so even though I lost fast when first did the combo - soon I gained due to disrupting my metab/thyroid with soy milk. And I only used 1/2 cup (as he does). Keep that in mind.

I found useful information in this book. Essentially it is a guide to right- eating with a bit of exercise- help thrown in. It has lists and appendices which are useful, including one on the super- foods and essential vitamins. There is no information here which is so far as I can tell earth- shakingly new. Dr. Weil and a host of others will tell you pretty much the same thing.
There is the usual promotion of Omega - 3 Reservaotol , of controlling inflammation, and de- toxifying the body. There is the stress on the importance of exercise. For myself I learned that I should eat a number of foods I have to this point resisted: almonds, avocado, blueberries, pumpkin ( I don't think I'll make this one) wild salmon. I too picked up a couple of useful exercises. Basically I believe the book is sound. I wish however it had had a chapter on the worst foods, on foods which should be avoided at all costs. Sugar, white- bread , trans- fat stuff, fatty red meat, etc. If there are lists for the good stuff, why not lists for the bad? The book is clearly and simply written. It does not excite or provide humor but I believe it is very good and can be very helpful. Another plus-I did not get that much older reading it.

No nutrition? Know nutrition!,
This review is from: SuperHealth: 6 Simple Steps, 6 Easy Weeks, 1 Longer, Healthier Life (Hardcover)
I'm still reading, but I wanted to give compliments, so far. Most Americans need this common knowledge because most Americans need more nutrition information than what's on the side of the box. Superhealth is easy to read. I've been keeping in my gym bag because it's a page turner I read on the treadmill!! Thanks Dr. Pratt!
