Peter currently lives in the San Diego area with his wife, Nancy and their dogs, Blackfoot, Sage and Pinto. They compete in agility and herding trials.
This is often one of the first questions asked by new pet owners, and is also the topic of considerable debate among dog handling experts.
With the aid of choke collars, traditional obedience classes stress on-leash lessons in HEEL, COME, SIT, DOWN and STAY. They only accept dogs six months or older and usually tailor their training towards future obedience competition. Unfortunately, not all that much emphasis is placed upon day-to-day, pet-owner concerns.
Other classes take a more lenient approach and accept pups as young as eight weeks. These "kindergarten" classes use food lures, enticing the puppies to perform for a tasty treat. Much of the time is spent playing and socializing with the other dogs and their owners.
The SuperPuppy goal is to raise a dog that grows up to be a contributing member of the family - one that behaves not because it was forced or "bribed" to, but because it wants to! In the SuperPuppy approach, dogs are not seen as robots that can be readily programmed using force or food, but as infinitely complicated beings capable of solving a vast range of problems!
So, when can you start training your puppy? As soon as you're ready! SuperPuppy Class is especially designed for young dogs - you don't have to wait!

This book is simple, straightforward, and easy to use. It's an excellent book for puppy owners to use for getting off on the right foot. It's well- written, easy to follow, and covers all the situations that come up while raising a puppy, and then some. It's soft cover design and well organized layouot makes it convenient to have on hand and use as a quick reference. The techniques and information provided are based on years of animal behavior research by many experts. It's well worth your time and money in setting the groundwork for a long and rewarding relationship with your dog.

This book, together with "SuperPuppy: How to Raise the Best Dog you'll Ever Have" are the best puppy socialization and training books I've read. We've had 12 to 14 pointers and retrievers over the years, all trained for field work. This book on puppy training focuses on socialization and basic obedience training using positive reinforcements. It talks about how to correct and avoid a number of bad habits. It's short but very direct and straight forward in the writing and techniques. I'd rate it higher than 15 to 20 other books on puppy training currently on the market. It should be required reading for all breeders and puppy purchasers.
