It's been our dream to help change the way our family pet dogs are raised. For more than two decades we've been assisting pet owners with their dog behavior problems. After listening to their complaints, discovering how they raised their dogs as puppies, and how they deal with the problems that arise, one fact rings loud and clear: Most American pet owners have no idea of how to help their pups develop into confident, outgoing, respectful, well-behaved, well-balanced adults! It's our view that this lack of understanding is the single most important reason that over 65% of dogs don't live out their lives with their original owners, only 15% of dog owners report positively about the owner/pet relationship, and one dog is "put down" every four seconds for non-medical reasons.

This manual grew out of our desire to share what we've learned from the dogs and people we've worked with. We feel that if new pet owners have a plan to raise their dogs using a system based on mutual respect, affection, trust and communication, many of the problems that cause so many people to give up their dogs will never occur. And not only that, but people will be introduced to the magical, rare, rewarding experience of sharing their lives with a member of another species.

About the Author

Peter Vollmer has worked with the Wisconsin Humane Society, Milwaukee Veterinary Medical Association, Hills Pet Products and dog training groups throughout the country to develop pet owner education programs that emphasize the need to begin training early. He received the Dog Writers' Association of America writing award for a series of articles on raising dogs that appeared in Veterinary Medicine/Small Animal Clinician. The book, SuperPuppy: How to Raise the Best Dog You'll Ever Have! developed from that series of articles.

Nancy has been training and competing with dogs since 1974. She has worked with the American Shetland Sheepdog Association and the American Kennel Club in developing herding instinct testing and trial programs, and developed a puppy training course for San Diego's All Breed Obedience Club

Peter and Nancy currently live in the San Diego area with their dogs, Blackfoot, Sage and Pinto. They compete in agility and herding trials.
