5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent motorcycle racing game. The best ever!, November 5, 2000
By
Team Steinert (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Superbike 2001 (CD-ROM)
If you are a fan of World Superbikes, or simply want a great racer, you can't go wrong with this one. It's the HIGHEST RATED RACING GAME on ...

An incredible amount of effort must have gone into this game, and it shows. Not only is it the best motorcycle game I have ever played, it's one of the best racing games. You can configure the difficulty to suit anyone's tastes, from hardcore simulation to an arcade blast. The graphics are spectacular, and as a fan of World Suberbike Racing, I can say the bikes, tracks and leathers are near spot on. On my GeForce2 video card, the race "replays" almost look like TV coverage of a real race! I owned World Superbikes, but passed on Superbike 2000 because the demo didn't play well (in my opinion). After playing the demo of Superbike 2001, I hopped on my motorcycle and raced to the store to buy a copy. I have seen video footage of most of the tracks in the game, and they are very accurate ...

There's a Championship mode, as well a a Quick Race option. The game ran great on the 2 PCs I have tested it on, and even played OK on my laptop.

If only there was an online multiplayer option (there is LAN play)...

By the way: If you need a great joypad, try the Interact Hammerhead FX! I read a great review of this pad ... and I'm glad I bought it. It is a close copy of the excellent PlayStation Dual-Shock pad, and works with Game or USB ports. The great thing for racing games like Superbike 2001 is that you can use one analog stick for steering (L-R), and the other for Gas/Brakes (U-D), but the game sees them as one stick which makes configuration a breeze! It's a huge improvement over playing with a digital pad or even one analog stick. The included software works great, and the pad is very comfortable. The PSX pad has both shoulder buttons stacked, while this pad places the lower shoulder buttons a little farther under the pad. This is actually better, and works very well in shooters like Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2, in my opinion.

Keep the rubber side down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, great, great!, March 22, 2001
This review is from: Superbike 2001 (CD-ROM)
General/Summary: All around, an excellent simulation of the hair-raising, physics-defying world of rice and ravioli racers. I've never been a huge fan of scooter racing, but, having too many friends who ARE, I picked this up on a lark. Glad I did, as this is one of the most enjoyable game/simulations available.

Gameplay: Gameplay is magnificent, ranging from the simple to the complex. Quick entry into the game through the novice levels is a joy, and allows even the most jaded ignorer-of-manuals a quick thrill and an amazing sense of speed. The higher-realism levels create a terrifying sense that you're out of control, something (I've been told) common to the sport itself. You'll feel as though you're about to die, and love every moment of it. A recommendation: I use a Logitech Wingman Force Feedback joystick, as the similarities to piloting a plane make it a very, very responsive controller. Although the Force Feedback modeling could be better, it adds much to the experience. The use of the joystick makes the game much, much more manageable than a gamepad (even the Freestyle Pro).

Graphics: Excellent. It's difficult to actually SEE much at the speeds modeled, but those things you see are very, very realistic. I've seen few games with such an immersive environment. A note: a prior reviewer expressed dismay that a first-person view was not available. It is. You are free to change among first and third-person points of view. The first-person is by far the most terrifying, but console fans will appreciate the third-person as well.

Sound: Ok. The bikes whine, but there's little other sound to notice, other than the occasional crowd roar (passing the grandstands) and the blather of the color commentator after a crash. All I would really expect is there: wind in your ears and the scream of a 1000cc bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars A motorcycle game that finally works like a motorcycle, December 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Superbike 2001 (CD-ROM)
This game is amazing in the details. The physics are configurable and for the most part believable. And don't underestimate the added fun of being able to shake your fist at another gamer after passing him, or pulling up a victory wheelie. Or listening to the announcer telling the crowd your opponent just crashed. If I had to nitpick, I'd say this. I wish they separated the physics of the front and rear wheels more. The bike tends to operate as a unit. I'd like the fun of operating the brakes independently, locking up the rear wheel to back it into a turn, or doing stoppies or burnouts. And any attempt to spin the wheel to steer out of a turn leads to a magnificent crash. Otherwise, great job!
