A Super book!, September 13, 2011
This review is from: Superboy & Superpup: The Lost Videos (Paperback)
In 1993 there were no DVDs and YouTube wouldn't come along for more than a decade. So it's hardly surprising that there wasn't a lot of interest in, or information about, two ill-fated spin-offs from the classic TV series "The Adventures of Superman" -- virtually nobody had seen 'em. But with "Superpup" now available on "Superman" DVD sets and "Superboy" on You Tube, this little book seems shockingly ahead of its time.
Clearly a labor of love for author Chuck Harter, the book chronicles the making of both shows, with remembrances from cast and crew as well as vintage press materials and a ton of never-before-seen on-set photos and screen-caps.
Harter also included self-penned novelizations of both shows. Additionally, the standard 13 scripts were penned for "Superboy" but only the first episode was filmed, so Harter again came up with a one-page novelization for each script. Sort of a shame that the scripts weren't included in their entirety but nonetheless it's interesting to read about the episodes that never were.
Should note two things... There's 12 pages (indexes, copyrights, forward, etc.) before the page numbering begins, which brings the 116 pages up to 128. And I believe it says somewhere that "Superpup" was shot in black and white (one reel of the show available on DVD is in color), but I can't find the exact passage -- and it's a forgivable mistake, as a color print hadn't surfaced at that point.
All in all, it's a fantastic book for Super-fans which, unfortunately, got a limited pressing by Cult Movies magazine, so resellers feel the need to charge 50 times what it's worth. Shame that it's not more widely available.
