Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Pietrucha, a professional communicator, describes his job as helping clients with interesting but complicated ideas explain themselves to the marketplace. He presents “supercommunicator” to mean a forward-thinking professional who can apply classic writing, speaking, and content-developing skills to a mind-set using new digital tools, including video, audio, graphics, and interactive features. It can be a poster board with a photograph and text or infographics that bring meaning to otherwise indecipherable data. With extensive interviews and examples, the author targets most professionals, including communicators in public relations, marketing, and news organizations as well as business and government leaders. Although developing digital tools is often a “team effort” for the broadest understanding of the information, Pietrucha and his interviewees encourage individuals to become infographic and visualization enthusiasts through online programs for producing visualization and learning how to successfully use searchable databases to tell a story. This is an excellent book for a wide range of library patrons since effective communication is an imperative in our digital age. --Mary Whaley

More About the Author

I work with engineers, scientists, economists, lawyers and other smart people to help them mold their ideas into something the rest of us can grasp. I've been "translating" on behalf of the business and technology elite for about 25 years. At A.T. Kearney, a leading management consulting firm, and at The Launch Company, a PR agency specializing in high-tech start-ups, I honed my skills at making complicated subjects easier to understand. I started my own company, Definitive Communications, in 2001; my client list includes George Washington University, the International Intellectual Property Institute, The Hartford and NASA's Ames Research Center.

I came up with the term "supercommunicator" to describe a new breed of forward-thinking professionals who can apply classic content development skills to a mindset befitting the quickly evolving millennium. Modeled after the Greek god Hermes who translated messages from Mount Olympus to earth-bound mortals, supercommunicators serve the critical function of de-geeking challenging concepts. It's important for folks with hard-to-understand ideas to come down from the heavens and speak to the rest of us in a language that's meaningful.

I continue to help clients explain their complicated concepts and enjoy sharing my knowledge with others through workshops and at events. I'm a graduate of Cornell University who enjoys travel, skiing, tennis... and my Irish Terrier, Auggie.

Very high level, doesn't say anything most working adults don't already know. Not too insightful. Basic communication aspects, try another option to develop your skills

Every day great ideas fall by the wayside because they were not properly explained, according to Frank Pietrucha in this book. To be successful in an increasingly competitive marketplace, you need to articulate a clear and easy-to-understand message to all relevant parties. The book aims to show how to communicate complicated ideas in a society where complicated material is abundant.

Key concepts discussed in the book include:

* The importance of understanding your audience
* How to focus on clarity and ensuring your message is as simple as possible but no simpler
* Ways of adding human elements to technical communications
* Personalization and getting your audience emotionally involved
* The importance of well-designed visual and interactive elements

It seems ironic that the author says, "We're no longer content with words sitting on a page," and yet the mode of communication he has chosen is a book. While he goes to some lengths to explain that effective communication has moved from static to interactive, text-heavy to visual, linear to non-linear, and dense to digestible, his own experience seems to have been primarily with writing and speaking, rather than with creating interactive multimedia.

This book contains a wealth of information and tips about effective communication, and will be helpful to anyone who needs to explain complex information to ordinary people.

True, this book is on the topic of communication but the author does not communicate his ideas in an super way. I found the book dull and headed to Half-Price Books.

As another reviewer noted, the content in this audiobook is unimpressive and fails to hold the reader's attention. The author dedicates entire sections to questions like "what is an infographic?" and "what powerpoint presentation software options are available to me?" These are best solved from a simple blog post or Google search, not a slow, plodding book like this one.

I'll let you what: if you are *completely* new to the digital age and you're genuinely looking digital communications 101, then this is a great match for you. If you don't know how to look for blog posts, etc., give this book a try. I concede that I might just be the worst possible audience for this book, but if the book is written only for the older generations, it shouldn't be marketed to the general public.

This is one of these books where you get good advice on how to perform well when communicating things. I fully agree with Frank on how much important is the message. I fully agree on choosing right tools, right way of approaching the audience, but I missed that in the book itself. All these ideas are rather presented than discussed. There are statements but with not too much of critique. And that’s what I have missed most.

For people who are really new to the topic this is a nice starter. For people who are in the subject, most of the concept are already known.

This book has rather light approach and will not require full attention from you all the time.

Really great examples and real life situations on how to communicate new ideas with language that has not yet been invented for new and/or complex new ideas.

Whole heartedly recommend to any whose job is to reach wide variety of non-tech audiences with plain simple English to make your message understood.

It's a complex world out there, and being able to not just understand complexity, but to explain it is a critical comparative advantage. Frank Pietrucha does just this, giving you a clear, yet comprehensive, guide on principles that should be widely accepted, but aren't always in practice.
