An uneven collection. Because Cachao is just that good, many of the cuts are good to great. The rest are merely filler. In addition, danzones are not what most people think of as "salsa" or Cuban music (I like danzones).Nothing bad, if you collect danzones and/or everything by Cachao, but not for everyone.

This album shows another side of Cachao. Lush string arrangements with a swinging Cuban groove underneath. Hypnotic and sensual. Amazing.

If you are not familiar with the Cuban danzon then let me give you a two sentence introduction. It starts with a rather French-influenced 19th century "Cuban" melody (or often an adaptation from a classical source) played by the violins and flute over the flowing timbale's "baqueteo". Oh is that a cool old school sound! Then it transitions into the "cha-cha" and before you know it you are taken away by this marvelous music.Whether you are familiar with the danzon or not you must know that Cachao is probably the biggest and baddest danzon player around. You have to listen to this recording and if you get infected by the danzon bug then also get "Danzones de Ayer y Hoy" from Orquesta Aragon...remember "hasta la reina Isabel baila el danzon..." |
