The Foundation of My Personal Bodybuilding Library, December 28, 2009
This review is from: Superflex: Ms. Olympia's Guide to Building a Strong & Sexy Body (Paperback)
After seeing that this book only has a rating of two stars here at Amazon, I feel compelled to write a review of my own. "Superflex" is THE most referred to bodybuilding book in my ever-growing personal collection. As a natural female bodybuilder and a certified fitness trainer, there are many physiques and personalities from the 1980s that have inspired and encouraged me to pursue my own version of physical "perfection", but Cory Everson is perhaps the ideal that I am still striving after (seconded closely by the likes of Anja Langer and Marjo Selin).
In "Superflex", which was written in the late 80s, Cory and her then-husband Jeff provide a very detailed look into their concepts of training, nutrition, competition strategy, and general fitness mindset. Although there are many other bodybuilding and fitness books that espouse similar ways of thinking and training, I still find Cory's "Superflex" to be the most encouraging and, at the most advanced levels of her training, the most grueling. Also, for me, variations of her advanced routines have proven the most effective at stimulating my physique to grow and change. Many bodybuilders, even those who have trained for years, will not be able to and perhaps even should not try to follow her exact routines. I do personally have a body type similar to hers and have found, as long as I keep to optimal nutrition and regular sleep patterns, I am able to ape workouts quite similar to hers as outlined in "Superflex" and receive similar results. Does that mean that for others who are less ectomorphic and lanky that this book is not a winner? Not at all. It is still filled with wonderful advice and training guidelines which are still applicable today.
Cory's take on carbohydrates I especially admire; unlike so many other bodybuilders, then and now, she embraces them and uses their different attributes (as complex and simple) to her great advantage, even while cutting for competition. Considering everything, I believe that this book is hardly a "dud", and the photographs I find to be almost as compelling and inspirational as the text. Although it is easy to see why Cory burned out after six straight years of this intense bodybuilding lifestyle, without giving herself a break, it is also to see that her methods worked well for her during her reign as Ms. Olympia. Personally, I find her methods to be equally fulfilling in my own training lifestyle as well and have adopted many of them as my own. I am sure there are other bodybuilders out there and aspiring fitness enthusiasts who will likewise be inspired and well educated by her cumulative experience--from her "Superflex" to her "Cory Everson's Life Balance", the lady is a physical fitness gem and seems a really decent person to boot.

Great information on cory's workout, just what I was looking for, June 9, 2010
This review is from: Superflex: Ms. Olympia's Guide to Building a Strong & Sexy Body (Paperback)
I have always admired Cory's physique and was somewhat frustrated that I couldn't get a more detailed overview of how she accomplished it. This book is as close a guide as you will ever get, with images of the exercises, her reasons for doing them, detailed information about how she gets into competition shape as well as the kinds of foods that she was eating at the time. It was quite eye opening and her writing style is very accessible.
This is not a coffee table book, the print quality is somewhat low (black and white photography, paper which isnt that smooth), but the real strength of this book is in the information and advice it offers people, from the average woman looking for a way to get into shape to people with competition aspirations. The information may be old at this point, but it is good for those looking to learn how Cory did it.

This review is from: Superflex: Ms. Olympia's Guide to Building a Strong & Sexy Body (Paperback)
I am 46 Years old. I remember when I purchased this book. It was actually the easiest book to follow. Cory made body building for woman look beautiful and still womanly. I admired the fact she gave you her background and challanges. I related to her book and that is what made this work for me. It is so important for women to keep their bodies strong especially as you age. She'a living proof that her concepts work. I have experienced several back and neck injuries due to my line of work. I always kept her instruction close by in my rehabilitations.
I (knock on wood ) had fast recoveries. My doctors stated that it was due to keeping my body healthy and fit.
