5.0 out of 5 stars It's not easy being green
It gets kind of lonely being a die-hard Mudhoney fan. They are without doubt one of the great rock bands of my lifetime, they enjoyed as much hype as any of the grunge bands the first time around, they continue to release outstanding records and still they can't get arrested.

This epic slab of rock was released in May and this is the first Amazon review. What...

3.0 out of 5 stars Too many repeats
For me a reissue should offer something more than the original to make it worthwhile. This certainly does that, but the problem here is too many repeats. Mudride appears 4 times, In and Out of Grace and Touch Me I'm sick each appear 3 times. It might have been better to take the Bleach route and include an entire live show from the era or something like that. The...

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not easy being green, July 11, 2008
This review is from: Superfuzz Bigmuff (Dlx) (Audio CD)
It gets kind of lonely being a die-hard Mudhoney fan. They are without doubt one of the great rock bands of my lifetime, they enjoyed as much hype as any of the grunge bands the first time around, they continue to release outstanding records and still they can't get arrested.

This epic slab of rock was released in May and this is the first Amazon review. What gives?

For the record, Superfuzz Bigmuff was an absolute battering ram in its original incarnation and remains so to this day. Not only does this recording rock really, really extra-especially hard, it is a lot of fun too. This is the sound of a great band exploding (in a really good way).

The deluxe edition adds the sub pop compilation tracks from the period and the second disc of live stuff is very welcome. The live in Berlin songs are stellar but the radio station stuff from Santa Barbara leaves a lot to be desired fidelity-wise.

Good liner notes too. Reminds you of why you became a fan in the fist place.

Give us something new!

5.0 out of 5 stars honey scum ride, January 12, 2011
This review is from: Superfuzz Bigmuff (Dlx) (Audio CD)
This is the classic Mudhoney that you need. Has all of the early singles and the EP... plus demos and live stuff. The 1988 Berlin show has been booted before but not in this great fidelity while the KCSB radio show is super hot 'n raw (although at radio broadcast sound quality). I can't love this edition enough. Dan Peters... great drummer. Mark Arm/Steve Turner, Green River/Mr. Epp. Matt Lukin... Melvins. During solos they were an improvisational energy force, indeed much like the Stooges or MC5, but slower, heavier.
Here's to more classic heavy Seattle rock being reissued in a deluxe edition... May I suggest early Soundgarden, Nirvana, Screaming Trees, and TAD! Or Cincinnati Ohio's Afghan Whigs & Denver Colorodo's the Fluid. Buy this and support Sub Pop for continuing to mine & promote the pioneer grunge lexicon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular, July 4, 2009

They were spectacular, much much better than that other Sub Pop band. The sound was really slow and heavy like the Stooges but with also a hard rock element that most punk groups that were inspired by the Detroit era did not have. This one will simply blow you away.

5.0 out of 5 stars not a big fan before but I AM NOW! GREAT Remastered set, August 2, 2008
This review is from: Superfuzz Bigmuff (Dlx) (Audio CD)
I've read about Mudhoney for years. I even own their split single done with Sonic Youth: touch me i'm sick/Halloween.
But their version of SY's Halloween didn't thrill me.

Recently hearing Mudhoney on some MOJO magazine compilations and reading of this release in Mojo, Uncut and Classic Rock made me pick this up when I found it for the low price of $14.98 at Best Buy (I was redeeming bonus point coupons!). The package is great and the liner notes superb.
Every track is detailed for the consumate completist like myself.
Lots of band pictures and album art.

The Music? Sheer wonderful Seattle punk. Not grunge. Punk.
Mudhoney sounds like The Stooges west coast cousins.
From the opening song "Touch Me I'm Sick" I am hooked. [by the way "Touch Me..." remind me a lot of Kim Fowley's classic "Animal Man". You have to listen to the lyrics of both to understand. Fowley himself was a quite the punk in some of his songs.]

All the good stuff is here. Singles. Rare tracks from compilations.
A Live set from Berlin and another live set from radio.

Buy this set and hear some good punk rock!
A must for any collector of punk, grunge and garage band music.

3.0 out of 5 stars 20 years later - still don't get it, September 19, 2008

2 and a half stars, actually.

I really didn't like Mudhoney when they first came out. The hype never matched the music for me. As a huge fan of the Stooges, MC5, Blue Cheer, etc I thought Mudhoney would be right up my alley. But they were not. Their music seemed kinda dull to me and the "ironic rocking out" thing was a huge turn off. But hey, they were better than Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

20 years later I read the same Mojo article one of the other reviewers here mentioned. I found a cheap, used copy of this and decided to give them another listen. All of my thoughts from 20 years ago remain. The studio tracks sound so incredibly stiff to me. It kinda rocks, but definitely does not roll. I really don't understand how anyone could get excited about this stuff one way or the other. It's not bad, it's pretty listenable but it's not "amazing" (the most over used word in indie rock land). The live stuff rocks a lot harder but the between song banter is a little annoying.

Anyway, this is considered their best material. If you're a fan you probably own this already. If you're curious, pick it up but don't expect the earth to move. I doubt anyone in Mudhoney ever believed the hype or thinks they revolutionized rock music the way writes claim they did.
