Graphic SF Reader, May 21, 2008
This review is from: Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes, Vol. 5: The Dominator War (Paperback)
Team-ups and old event tie-ins.
Mark Waid displays his geekery again, here, linking the Dominator invasion in the 31st century back to the cheesy Dominator War DC event in earlier, time, complete with a Booster Gold cameo and joke.
That being said, this collection of issues 26-30 is just as enjoyable as the rest, with an old Legion stalwart making an appearance, and plots within plots as Cos, Brainy, Mekt Ranzz and the Wanderers, and the Dominators try to get the upper hand in this battle of the planets.
Pretty cool SF and superhero action.

Decent space war with an interesting twist, December 23, 2011
This review is from: Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes, Vol. 5: The Dominator War (Paperback)
After rebooting the team in 2004 writer Mark Waid and artist Barry Kitson take their bows with this volume collecting issues 26-30 of (Supergirl and the) Legion of Super-Heroes. Their long-running plot threads come together for a final battle with the alien Dominators. The book has some weaknesses, there's fill in issues by Tony Bedard and Kevin Sharpe that interrupt the consistency. In the conclusion it appears the Legion committed an atrocity (SPOILER they didn't) but it's never made clear why they need to deceive everyone. For long-time Legion fans we have the return of Mon-El and a fitting end for Cosmic Boy and other nice touches. If only Waid and Kitson's entire run was up to this level of quality.

Highpoint for the Threebooted Legion, August 25, 2011
This review is from: Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes, Vol. 5: The Dominator War (Paperback)
This collection of comics contain the last issues Mark Waid wrote on the threebooted version of the Legion of Superheroes. While Waid only wrote the comic for two and a half years, he did a remarkable job in leaving a memorable take on DC's premier heroic team of the future. The comics collected in "The Dominator War" were the highlight of the threebooted version of the Legion though the series would limp on for almost two years after Waid left.
The book is centered around an epic clash of civilizations. There are inspiring and memorable moments and like the best Legion writers--Paul Levitz and Jim Shooter for example--Waid never forgets that this is a comic for an ensemble cast. Despite pulling the stings on a large number of characters, Waid is able to keep character growth and development as a major part of the work.
There are moments of high drama and sacrifice throughout the book--but there are also instances of comic relief and emotional buildup and release. The art by Barry Kitson and Mick Grat is excellent.
"The End is Only the Beginning" notes the last page of the book--while it may have been so for Waid, in retrospect when he and the Legion's leader both vanished after Issue 30 which marks the end of the book, it was the beginning of the end for the threebooted Legion. These works clearly mark the apex of the series and Waid went out on top. Fans of the threebooted Legion can only wish that he had stayed longer. Nonetheless, this book is one of the finest collection of comics I have ever come across.
