5.0 out of 5 stars must-have Supergrass, September 6, 2004

This review is from: Supergrass Is 10: The Best of 94-04 (DVD)
This DVD has not left my player since I got it a few days ago. It is much more than I expected. If you are or ever were a Supergrass fan, you need this 2 disc DVD set.

The video tracks are:
Caught by the Fuzz (UK & US versions)
Mansize Rooster
Lenny
Alright
Time
Going Out
Richard III
Sun Hits the Sky
Late in the Day
We Still Need More
Pumping on Your Stereo
Moving
Mary (Onions & uncut)
Grace
Seen the Light
Rush Hour Soul
Kiss of Life
extras: Lose It, ...Fuzz (acoustic) and Richard III (multi-angle)

and on the second disc:
A Home Movie: Documentary Film

It amazes me that a band could have started this young (Gaz was only 15) with so much ability and grasp of rock history. It's clear from their earliest songs that they can do chord changes and progressions that some bands never master. You hear echos of T Rex, Buzzcocks, Beatles, Bowie, you name it. These guys have musical talent to spare and write catchy, creative, fun, melancholy, wonderful songs.

You'll like it, trust me. One skeptical passerby in my household, with no prior Supergrass exposure, was drawn in by the first song-- "these guys write catchy tunes"-- stayed for the whole DVD, and now is borrowing all my Supergrass CDs!

The 'home movie' is about an hour long and is a revelation to Americans not exposed to or aware of their Brit superstardom (they played Wembley for chrissakes!) It shows just how big they are in England, while being less than well known here. This is an engrossing document following the band as they grow up and grow famous--yet manage to maintain their down-to-earth nature and remain true to themselves.

Gaz shows talent as an actor too (he plays the homeless guy in 'Rush Hour Soul.') I didn't realize it was him the first few times. He brings to mind Kutcher in the Butterfly Effect. I read somewhere that Spielberg once wanted to make these guys into the new Monkees, and I can see why. Just turn a camera on them and they'd be fun to watch.

This Canadian import DVD may never get an American release, and will surely be gone quickly if it does, so snag it while you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Stop Watching This!, May 10, 2005

This review is from: Supergrass Is 10: The Best of 94-04 (DVD)
This is probably the most entertaining Rock DVD that I own. If you're a Supergrass fan, there's absolutely no excuse for not owning it (you can buy the import!) Anyway, you won't want to miss it because it's everything you could possibly want in a 10-Year History DVD set...all of the videos are here, some that I haven't seen in ages, and some that I had never seen before. Plus you can choose to hear the "Directors' Commentary" for each one (or select the karaoke version if you want). "Late In the Day" still has to be my favorite Supergrass video, and I always wanted to know what went on during the filming...now I have the inside scoop. It's so cool that I'm now able to stick the DVD in the player and watch the videos at any time.

I wasn't sure what to expect from the "Home Movie" DVD, but it's one of the best rock and roll documentaries I've ever seen. At times it's laugh-out-loud funny. Supergrass is a band with a sense of humor I can really relate to...they're wacky, zany and all of that. I first heard of Supergrass back in `93/'94 when I used to live in Oxford (Jericho), so it's a lot of fun to go back in time to hear about the band playing early shows at the Jericho Tavern, and see them singing and talking to the cows. The scene where we get to hear one of Danny's early songs (somewhat reminiscent of "Lola") is unbearably funny. And seeing a 15-year-old Gaz (he had major sideburns already) is also a treat.

Supergrass has definitely stood the test of time, and I'm so glad they decided to release this DVD set, even if it's a bit difficult for American fans to get a hold of.

Brilliant band, brilliant songs, a brilliant Dvd. No need telling you what is on it. Buy it. It's worth every penny you spend.
