3.0 out of 5 stars Overrated!!!
Stephen Lynch Is Pretty Funny Live Or On His DVD's, But Stay Away From His Overrated CD's. They Are Just Not That Funny To Listen To. He Needs More Live CD's Instead. If You Want Funny & Original, Pick Up Bo Burnham's CD, "Bo Burnham". Now His CD Is Hilarious!

I bought this cd purely on the basis of two songs I heard him sing on tv. Not only was is great to hear those two songs again, but every single song on this albumn are FAB! Not only are Mr. Lynch's songs extremely funny, they are also well-written and the lyrics are very clever. If he wasn't a comedian, I'm sure he'd have a successful career as a rock star! He has that star quality about him- super good looks, witty sense of humor and he knows how to really rock on the guitar!

I like this cd better than his first release primarily because is was recorded live and he has a wonderful rapport with audiences, an element that was sorely missing from his first CD "A Little Bit Special." (But, don't put that you off buying it because it also is very fun and entertaining!) Not a lot of comics can talk with people in the audience and work the conversation into their routines. Stephen Lynch does this so naturally! Especially in the song "Superhero," where some members of the crowd come up with their own superheros, with some pretty freaky results!

"Talk To Me" is another great song, which has a good beat, great guitar riffs and made me laugh so hard that milk came out my nose! (really) Who else could sing so beautifully about a subject so taboo! Same thing with the song "Grandfather," nothing more sacred than a loved one who leaves you money! (I don't want to say any more without giving anything away!)

I can not find a bad or mediocre song on the albumn, every one will keep you laughing and smiling. Even his self-proclaimed worst song he ever wrote "Bowling Song," which, in my opinion, still brings in the laughs.

I have made all my friends listen to this cd, and every single one of them loved it! If you enjoy stand-up comedy and/or great guitar music, buy this cd. Perfect gift for almost anybody (be warned, he may offend some people. Certainly none of my friends!)

Now all I can ask for is for Stephem Lynch to come tour the UK so I can see him live!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Offensive, and hilarious, October 11, 2005
This review is from: Superhero (Audio CD)
I recently saw this guy live even though I was only familiar with "What If That Guy From Smashing Pumpkins Lost His Car Keys". Unless you are easily offended, go see him live. You won't regret it, he interacts with the audience a lot. I picked up this CD at the merch table after his show. Lynch's combination of acoustic guitar and innocently wicked lyrics will leave you in pain from laughing so hard. I like the fact that this was recorded before a live audience, because it captures the experience of seeing him at a show. That's what led me to buy this instead of "A Little Bit Special". The audience reaction to the songs on "Superhero" adds so much to the album. My personal favorites are:

Dr. Stephen - I love the way you expect him to say a certain word, then he says something completely innocent instead. You have to listen to know what I'm talking about.

Superhero - This song is a good example of the audience interaction at his shows. I like the audience-chosen superheroes, but I probably can't repeat the names here.

What If That Guy From Smashing Pumpkins Lost His Car Keys - Catchy title for a catchy song. Whether you like the Smashing Pumpkins or not (I do), you will find this short song hilarious. It's a really great impression of Billy Corgan.

Mother's Day - Also very short, but such an unexpected ending.

Taxi Driver - Oh man, I almost p*ssed myself the first time I heard this song! It starts out as a folk song until you hear what the taxi driver said. Totally politically incorrect, but so funny! This is my current favorite track.

Best Friends Song - This duet with Mark Teich starts out friendly and quickly becomes a song about how the one friend wants to nail the other friend's little sister. Another one you have to hear to appreciate.

I also like the bonus track at the end which contains "Lullaby (live)" and "Special Olympics (live)". Lullaby is great, and explains to his daughter "why Mommy left us". This album is a good place to start if you like dark offensive humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super effort from Lynch, February 28, 2004
This review is from: Superhero (Audio CD)
I had no idea of what to expect when I watched Comedy Central Presents featuring Stephen Lynch. In hindsight, I realized that what I earned was an addiction. An addiction to a awesome singing comedian. Ever since watching that special, I have been a fan of Lynch. When I received the opportunity to borrow his latest CD from a friend, I took advantage of it.

Having listened to the CD at least a dozen times over in the three or four days I had it, I can say that this is truly a solid album from beginning to end. Every song generates at least a chuckle if not a full-blown laugh.

The biggest laughs for me came from "Superhero" (which is extended quite a bit from the Comedy Central version since Lynch asks fans for superhero suggestions with hilarious results). Yes, Stephen Lynch is offensive, as his song "For The Ladies" makes quite clear. However, there's no denying that he has a certain talent about him. It's enough that he can write very funny material. But the fact that he can sing most of his tunes with the voice of someone you'd expect fronting a rock band, it adds a certain dimension to it.

When it comes to the issue of "Bowling Song (Almighty Malachi, Professional Bowling God)," the truth is that the song is not the funniest thing that Lynch has produced. But the mere fact that he blasts himself for writing the song before and during his playing of the song allows for some laughs. You can understand why Lynch hates it, but if nothing else, it's a rockin' bowling song.

All in all, this is definitely worth a purchase. Yes, you may have heard him perform some of these songs on different radio shows or on Comedy Central specials, but you've never quite heard him like this unless you've seen him in person. Go out and get this now, it's an almost essential album to have if you love to laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even Better than "A Little Bit Special!", April 15, 2003

Stephen Lynch has done it again when it comes to making an outrageously hilarious and extremely offensive album full of twisted and bizarre songs that will have your jaw on the ground. In the tradition of "A Little Bit Special," Stephen Lynch's "Superhero" is full of some of the sickest and crudest songs your little ears will ever hear.

Lynch was a favorite on the Opie and Anthony show (boy, I really miss those guys), always bringing a guitar and coming up with some very funny and offensive songs. Most of the time they had to bleep him because of swearing or language that wasn't appropriate for the radio. Don't let his innocent looks and sweet tone fool you, this guy is vicious when it comes to hilarious songs.

The great thing about this album is all of the songs are performed live, so you get the crowd reaction with every single song, which really does a great job of making the album that much funnier. You get to hear the laughs, cringes, and shouts in disgust or disbelief.

I can't even begin to tell you what's included on this album. If I even tried, there'd be lots of periods replacing sentences, if you catch my drift. If you look at the song titles, trust me, you will get the idea of what's included on this album. My favorite songs are "superhero," "priest," "for the ladies," what if that guy from smashing pumpkins lost his car keys?" "d & d," "bowling song," "down to the old pub instead," and "mother's day." They're all really good, in my opinion.

Again, I must warn you this album isn't for everybody. If you get easily offended or disgusted, you better just pick something else up and give that a listen. (This is by the same man who came up with the song, "kill a kitten.) If you do love dark and twisted humor, then this album might be the one for you. "Superhero" is bound to get some laughs, as well as some looks of disgust from everybody. I loved every second!

5.0 out of 5 stars An angelic voice with a devilish sense of humor., December 21, 2002

I first caught the comedy stylings of Stephen Lynch while watching Comedy Central. I was confused at first, because I had no idea what was so funny about some guy singing this sweet little lullaby to comfort his sad daughter. Little did I know of the lyrics which were to soon follow ...

'Superhero' is Lynch's second album (well...technically 3rd if you count a rare EP) and goes above and beyond the lowbrow standards he set with 'A Little Bit Special'. The material is much more racy and 'in your face', but IMHO Lynch's saving grace is he never really says anything to be mean - he's only trying to make you laugh. He pokes fun at everything from incest to immigration and has the distinct honor of recording the most offensive pub song I've ever heard. :)

Normally I cannot stand 'live' albums, but this album strikes a chord with me because it gives an aural 'peek' into the energy behind his performances. It's quite evident Lynch is having as much fun performing as the audience is listening. He even gets to do a bit of improv on the titular song - which is much funnier and WAAAY dirtier than its appearance on his Comedy Central special.

5.0 out of 5 stars I saw Jesus while listening to this cd., April 18, 2003

This album is much better than his other "A Little Bit Special", though you can't really go wrong with either album in my opinion. For me it was better because the live audience really makes it an enjoyable experience and you can laugh with them. Granted, this cd is not for you if you get easily offended (note: track 9 "for the ladies" is definately a naughty one) but honestly, if you can't laugh to these songs then you need to lighten up! This is the funniest CD I've listened to since the Arrogant Worms album I purchased a few years ago.

My Personal Favourites:

Track 1 - Talk to Me (You just have to listen to it, period.)
Track 5 - Superhero (The responses from the audience are just...hilarious. I almost died from this song.)
Track 10 - Grandfather (His "innocent" sounding voice really makes this song funny.)
Track 12 - She Gotta Smile (A big fat friend, genius.)
Track 15 - Down to the Old Pub Instead (Absolutely disgusting, I love it. One of his funniest songs.)

Stephen Lynch is truly a comedic genius. Can't wait for a new album. If you're a fan of "offensive" musical comedy, ala Adam Sandler (Even though Lynch is much funnier) then you must own this cd, and his other one.

Every track is worse and yet better than the last! I laughed so hard I cried. This humor is not for everyone though, so be careful who you let listen to it. One of my friends got really offended.

I personally think Stephen Lynch is hysterical! If you have a slightly twisted sense of humor, this CD is a must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC & WRONG ON EVERY LEVEL!, December 22, 2004
This review is from: Superhero (Audio CD)
This is truly one of the most hysterical CD's ever. Not only is Stephen Lynch a wonderfully talented singer and guitar player, he also has the most wicked and twisted sense of humor of anyone else out there. Somehow he has the ability to take a melodic and beautiful song and couple it with the kookiest and nastiest lyrics and make it work. I've had the pleasure of seeing him perform live and my stomach literally hurt for several days from laughing so hard. This CD is an absolute must-have for anyone with a questionable sense of humor!

5.0 out of 5 stars The funniest CD I've ever heard, January 27, 2004
By
This review is from: Superhero (Audio CD)
I was first exposed to Stephen Lynch on a Comedy Central stand-up special, and he is one of the funniest comedians out there. This CD is awesome; I can think of only one song that didn't have me laughing myself to tears (and he admits in the beginning that it isn't funny). Lynch is a master at pushing the very limits of what is acceptable, and making it funny as hell. I would say, though, that this CD (especially the song "For the Ladies") is not for the prudes. Don't listen to it with your kids, and for God's sake, don't listen to it with your mom!
