First he played a superhero, then he became one -- this era's most inspirational true story shows the courage and dignity of the actor known as Superman

The world swooned when unknown actor Christopher Reeve flew across the screen as Superman, the Man of Steel. Clad in a trademark cape and tights, he captivated millions and became an overnight sensation as the model of "truth, justice, and the American way". Unlike many young stars, Christopher Reeve never abused his fame or slipped onto the fast track. He turned down lucrative offers from Hollywood to act on Broadway, volunteered on behalf of children and freedom of speech, and raised a family with his wife, fellow actor Dana Morosoni.

The world watched in horror when tragedy struck the Man of Steel, who was thrown from his horse and paralyzed during a riding competition. Faced with death, told he might never breathe without a ventilator again, let alone walk, Reeve chose to live, to raise his family, to direct, and to fight for better care and a cure for the thousands like him. This moving tribute to one man's courage and dignity proves that Christopher Reeve doesn't have to fly to be a superhero.

From Booklist

In Nickson's chummy bio, Christopher Reeve comes off as "a gentleman, and a superhero," from his self-consciously nondancing early teens to his paraplegic present. Nickson tastefully emphasizes the riding mishap that paralyzed Reeve and his subsequent courageous battle to recover from it, and he shows that Reeve had been an exemplary citizen and role model before the accident, too. The cautions about scandalous contents so often sounded about Hollywood bios need not be sounded here, and that doesn't mean the book has a false or sugarcoated feel to it. Rather, it warmly conveys a man of strong character who continues to be involved in film, directing the TV movie In the Gloaming (1997) and looking for further projects, not least because, as Nickson notes, "soon his insurance will run out, which will leave him in a very difficult financial situation." Perhaps this book will help assure a bright future for an admirable human being, actor, and disabled rights activist. From Kirkus Reviews

Shoddy flummery masquerading as biography. This ``life'' of the actor best known for playing Superman presupposes an absurdly simple-minded public. The prose is more suited to an overly enthusiastic third-grade reading primer. And lets not forget the cynicism that surely inspired this travesty. Reeve was a bright young man, with a small gift for acting when he won the role of Superman (based largely on his resemblance to the cartoon character). He had a chance at semi-stardom, but squandered it with a series of extremely poor role choices. Every year, he faded further into obscurity, until a horse-riding accident left him paralyzed. Hollywood loves a cripple, especially when theres an added fillip of mawkish irony, and so Reeve has returned to the limelight. Veteran quickie biographer Nickson (Emma: The Many Faces of Emma Thompson, not reviewed, etc.) shamelessly vultures onto Reeves tragedy with smarmy avowals of admiration: ``Chris is not just a brave man, hes someone who refuses to accept the idea of defeat in this, or in anything regarding his life. Hes showing us what people at their best can be . . . and he deserves all the support we can offer him.'' The Newsweek cover story last year on Reeve and his situation was more revealing and detailed than Nicksons hash and rehash of other already-published magazine articles. Readers who cant get enough of Reeve are best advised to wait for his autobiography (see p. 650). -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. More About the Author

I'm the author of the Richard Nottingham books, historical mysteries set in Leeds in the 1730s and featuring Richard Nottingham, the Constable of the city, and his deputy, John Sedgwick. The books are about more than murder. They're about the people of Leeds and the way life was - which mean full of grinding poverty for all but the wealthy. They're also about families, Nottingham and his and Sedgwick, and the way relationships grow and change, as well as the politics, when there was one law for the rich, and another, much more brutal, for everyone else.

Why Leeds? It's where I was born and raised, and that puts a place in your bones. You know it the way you can never quite know anywhere else...

In addition to this I'm also a music journalist, reviewing for magazines and online outlets, something I've been doing since the mid 1990s, specializing these days in world and roots music.

Christopher Reeve's acting career alone is probably not interesting enough to sell books. It was his determination to recover from his crippling riding accident that inspired me to listen to the audio version of Superhero: Ahe Biography of Christopher Reeve, by Chris Nickson.

Other than his rise to stardom at an early age with Superman, and his tragic accident, there is nothing much to say. This becomes evident when the author runs out of words and starts using the same phrases over and over again. By the middle of the book I was annoyed and tired of listening to it. It left me feeling that Christopher Reeve was a well to do, preppy actor who made it big, then squandered his stardom and made excuses for his otherwise mediocre acting career.

Sadly enough, it takes his paralyzing riding accident to pick up the pace of the book and make it interesting enough to finish. His life after the fall is certainly more notable and the book depicts a couple of really moving moments.

Perhaps in another 20 years his life will have expanded enough to make a really worthwhile book. My opinion is they should have waited until then to write this one.
