5.0 out of 5 stars An explosive sequel to "Technical Difficulties"
From hard rock, to metal, to blues... Paul Gilbert has covered it all, and he's brought that versatility into this album. I might even say "Superheroes is like a box of chocolates..." You never know what you are going to get.

Let me pull a few examples here. Songs like Mad at the World would sit well in a power rock/ballad category (recognize that melody...

2.0 out of 5 stars Racer X is great but Superheroes... not so much
My first Racer X cd was Technical Difficulties, a record i feel defines what it means to rock. Being completely satisfied with my purchase I went to read some buyer's reviews of their other albums on amazon. I decided that Second Heat would be my next purchase, but i stumbled upon "Superheroes" in a record store and decided "hey why not just get this one since its here"...

From hard rock, to metal, to blues... Paul Gilbert has covered it all, and he's brought that versatility into this album. I might even say "Superheroes is like a box of chocolates..." You never know what you are going to get.

Let me pull a few examples here. Songs like Mad at the World would sit well in a power rock/ballad category (recognize that melody from Mr. Big - My Kinda Woman?), but metal instrumentals such as Viking Kong and King of Monsters belong in a category of their own. Bluesy tunes, O.H.B. and That Hormone Thing, and pure out sheer hard rock tunes like Dead Man's Shoes would NEVER mix will in a record... right? Wrong! Paul Gilbert did it all - and even threw in a Racer X interpretation of the Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla," with the guitars tuned an octave down and the vocals pushed an octave UP from the original recording.

Big fan of metal? The title track is as heavy as it gets, with screaming Halford-like lyrics pushed out in front and flashy stampeding guitar-work that will FLATTEN YOU if you're not careful!

Even though the songs are quite seperate in category, Paul Gilbert manages to creatively bind them all together in a fashion where every song is equally enjoyable as the other. True Racer X fans and the lovers of hard rock and metal will not be disappointed with this release.

Having anticipated the arrival of my Racer X "Superheroes" cd for several weeks (import delays) I gotta say this is the best music I've heard in the last 3 years. As if "Technical Difficulties" wasn't a great cd, "Superheroes" has Racer X sounding their best ever! The fans in Japan must be happy to have an advantage (so it seems) to such great Racer X music. When I heard those opening lines to "Godzilla", I knew I was in for a treat! Paul Gilbert has never sounded better and his guitar tone is matched by very few players. Wonderfully fearsome music - those Racer X boys are at the top of their game!!

This CD is unbelievable ... the best CD Racer X has ever released. The title track absolutely cooks and they don't let up from there. I saw them at the Whisky last month - incredible show (can't wait to get the live CD/DVD). Paul's guitar work on this CD is, as always, truly terrifying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metal at its best!, January 13, 2004
This review is from: Superheroes (Audio CD)
I had never heard Racer X back in the 80s. I liked some of the stuff that Paul Gilbert did in Mr. Big, but I always felt like he was holding back. There is no holding back with Racer X, Superheroes! Gilbert plays some ferocious licks. Check out Viking Kong, wow!!! Other awesome songs include Superheroes, track #2, and Godzilla (my favorite). Jeff Martin does some great singing on this one. This is metal that one must head bang to. Buy it, it rocks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best hard rock album in 20 years, May 18, 2001
This review is from: Super Heroes (Audio CD)
This is, without question, the best hard rock album to be released in the last 20 years. Even longtime fans of Paul Gilbert will be astonished at the ferocity of the playing, the level of songwriting, the production values, and the huge soundstage Racer X achieved on this album. Their first "reunion" album, "Technical Difficulties," was just a warm-up for this one.

So why haven't you heard about these guys? Why, oh why, is this disc only available in the USA as an import?! My copy came from some label in Holland via my local record store, which is pretty good about getting even the most obscure imports. It is absolutely disgraceful that the best American musicians/bands have to go overseas to make a living, while the poseurs with pockets full of payola get all the airplay.

Trust me, Racer X is the real deal, and this is the only disc you need to take to that desert island.

OK folks.. this is the one you've been waiting for. It rocks so much it defies logic... My favorite is Evil Joe. I think that song just burns. This thing is non stop rock from start to finish. You will be saying during and after each song. "God, how did they do that" Also, for any lucky folks living in L.A. They are playing the Whisky A Go Go 5/26. Do yourselves a favor and go see them. I've seen them dozens of times. I'm debating getting me a Southwest ticket to go for the weekend and see them. But they are recording a live CD and a DVD of the show so I'm not too bummed out. But this newest masterpiece is definitely worth getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars smokin, September 13, 2002

From the opening track, this album will blow your eardrums. Paul Gilbert at his best and back on track with speed riffs not heard in the last twenty years. Superheros is judas priest meets van halen, with a little tommy bolin, satriani and led zep thrown in...all except that this one has scott travis, the best drummer on the planet. This album is what metal should sound like. Buy this one! Actually buy a couple of copies and give them to the neighborhood kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars No mortal band can compete!, July 30, 2002
This review is from: Superheroes (Audio CD)
This is not the best Racer X has ever given us yet it is still explosive and terrifying. Unlike the previous Racer X material the songs on this album don't have that well rehearsed and almost live feel that we all have come to expect. It is still some of the best song writing and preforming being done a metal album to date though. Every memeber of this band is an amazing talent... I think it would take a supreme lack of effort on all of their parts to get anything less than a high quality album.

If you like 80s metal or shred you can not afford to pass this album up.

Racer X is truly back with this spine tingling CD. This is DEFINITELY one of those CD's you take on that "desert island." Paul, Jeff, Scott and John are back, and better than ever. Great song writing, meaningful songs, with top notch musicianship.

Hightlights include, an amazing redo of Godzilla, Dead Man's Shoes and Viking Kong (for you guitar freaks). Paul Gilbert is deadlier and faster than ever.
