Editorial Reviews

Review

“It is a meditation on Chicago’s old soul . . . a witty, seductive, live-wire and greatly entertaining dark comedy that you just don’t want to end.” – Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

“The sting, the speed and marksmanship of the gimcracks his characters fire at each other . . . drips the kind of soulful, energized sarcasm that has long characterized [Letts’] work as an actor and playwright.”– Time Out Chicago

“A wonderfully affecting and amusing work that reveals a playwright fully in command of his powers.” – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter

“Superior Donuts is very funny and also gut-punching sad, but ultimately it’s a redemptive tale about community and the need to let go of the past, however painful… Letts is an author whose muscular dialogue and skewed view of humanity make him one of our most valuable playwrights.” – David Cote, TimeOut New York for NY1

“Superior Donuts is a soulful play, full of humor and humanity… drawn with deep affection. Letts is a writer whose words are alive with poignancy and wit.” – David Rooney, Variety

FOUR STARS: “An engaging drama about the American dream.” – Jane Shilling, Daily Telegraph

FOUR STARS: “Tracy Letts’ entertaining play…bristling with one-liners. a sharp, compassionate and often very funny play about survival and the nature of hope. A sharp, compassionate and often very funny play about survival and the nature of hope.” – Sarah Hemming, Financial Times

“A source of comic bliss.” – Charles McNulty, Los Angeles Times

“Filled with sharp comedy and touching humanity” – Robert Hurwitt, San Francisco Chronicle

I enjoyed it. Characters were so real and well developed, I became attached to them easily. Makes you reflect on values and provides great insight. The play lingers in you thoughts and I savor thinking of it.

Of all the plays Mr. Letts has written, to date, this is his best. It has more heart than any of his other work, and it brilliantly captures the character of Chicago's Uptown neighborhood. It's funny, brutal and topical. In a way, it's even Chekhovian.

This reads as and, I think, is a very, very "Chicago" play. And it is essentially a "feel good" play without being icky-sweet-sentimental. ("From Letts? I can't imagine!") It is very human and contains universal themes as well as a notable but subtle ideological overtones. In all, a very nice play. It's easy to imagine that age appropriate casting and at least some representation of the warranted accents would make a production much stronger and very fulfilling for an audience.

Loved the way this play took a look at "the American Dream." The relationship between Arthur and Franco was genuine and filled with laughter, tension, and sincere compassion. Love it.

A mediocre play about an area of Chicago from an acclaimed playwright who isn't from Chicago. That would be fine if it was about a character who wasn't from Chicago looking in. But for me the play was depressing and not very entertaining. It was unnecessarily brutal at the end and left the reader with a feeling of hopelessness for the future of the great city on the lake. Pass.
