From the Author
The landscape where we reside shapes and defines our lives. In this book I share my long love affair with the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where my ancestors came to mine copper in the 1800s. On foot, with canoe, snowshoes, skids, by auto and in tents, I've explored this beautiful region which lies between Lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan. I've admired carpets of spring wildflowers, hiked old woods roads under arches of trees, canoed on quiet lakes ringed with unbelievable autumn color, snowshoed in winter woods so quiet that snowflakes falling are the only sound.
Presiding over the peninsula is incredible Lake Superior. After coming to know and love the lake for even a short time, most residents myself included could not live happily anywhere else.
I've written a lot of textbooks, but none was so rewarding as The Superior Peninsula an opportunity to share this special region with others who appreciate wild places and will treat them with care.
