From the Author

The landscape where we reside shapes and defines our lives. In this book I share my long love affair with the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where my ancestors came to mine copper in the 1800s. On foot, with canoe, snowshoes, skids, by auto and in tents, I've explored this beautiful region which lies between Lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan. I've admired carpets of spring wildflowers, hiked old woods roads under arches of trees, canoed on quiet lakes ringed with unbelievable autumn color, snowshoed in winter woods so quiet that snowflakes falling are the only sound.

Presiding over the peninsula is incredible Lake Superior. After coming to know and love the lake for even a short time, most residents myself included could not live happily anywhere else.

I've written a lot of textbooks, but none was so rewarding as The Superior Peninsula an opportunity to share this special region with others who appreciate wild places and will treat them with care.

Lon Emerick has captured the heart and soul of Michigan's Upper Peninsula--its extraordinary beauty, its people, its history--writing about both enchantment and eccentricities. The book is organized by seasons; you may find a new way of looking at winter! If you've ever been to Michigan--or thought you'd like to--this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rich Expression, September 30, 2005

This review is from: The Superior Peninsula: Seasons in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Paperback)
My family moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan just before my 12th birthday. Since moving to Texas 5 years ago I have a deeper appreciation for the U.P. I miss the rugged land, the deep woods, and all the waves and waterfalls where I had so many adventures growing up. Reading Lon's book brings back a lot of rich memories for me. If you love the land or are curious about the U.P. I highly recommend this book. Lon uses a lot of rich language to describe what it is like living in the Upper Peninsula. He mixes his own personal feelings, enjoyments, and reflections about the U.P. with a touch of historical facts. The blending of these two creates a rich expression of life in the Upper Peninsula. He also has a good recipe for pasties in it which I tried while living in Texas to have a taste of home. To my surprise my first attempt at making a pasty turned out really good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even if you live in the U.P. - this is a wonderful book!, October 16, 2008

I've visited relatives in the U.P. for several years and recently moved up here and I love the natural beauty in so many places! This is a fabulous book and after reading it - I'm ready to search out some of really rugged spots you can't get to by car. I'm not a big one for getting out in the winter - but after reading Lon's section on winter - I'm going to get myself some snowshoes!!! How nice of Lon to share some of his favorite spots with us.
