Former Army sniper Bill Tatum likes his new job. As Deputy Sheriff of Mineral County, Colorado, he gets to ride a horse and wear a cool hat, but he never expected to find a dead woman in the hills behind his cabin. Tatum never expected to find himself on the wrong side of the crosshairs, either. The woman with the bullet hole in her temple was a reporter from the Rocky Mountain News, and her journal brings to life the big-city intrigue simmering in his small mountain town, but it brings him no closer to her murderer. The dead woman's shorthand reveals secret affairs, political corruption, and a pending environmental disaster, but Tatum has little time to ponder motive, because the bullets are flying. No one is safe from the deadly accurate vengeance of a well-placed rifle bullet. As Tatum muddles through the deception and lies in his once-innocent alpine village, the sniper stays one step ahead of him, killing mercilessly, then disappearing into the Colorado wilderness, eliminating carefully chosen targets with impunity. Tatum cannot overcome the sniper's meticulous planning and penchant for public assassinations. When his suspects fill up the county morgue instead of the jail, Tatum realizes he must fall back on his training as an Army sniper to regain Superior Position and stop the terror from the ridge above.

I really liked this story. The author did an incredible job developing the characters. The main chaacter is an ex-military sniper and is now a deputy sheriff who must track down another sniper in a small Colorado town. The mystery keeps you guessing and is loaded with western flair and sniper strategy. I just bought the author's second book to see if I like it as well.

I don't know why I bought the book or found out about it; it must have popped up as a recomendation. As a Westerner in general, and a Coloradan in particular, I like good yarns set in the west and Colorado. The author did a great job of developing his characters, the young, new, ex-Army, deputy came across as real, and the lanscape of south eastern Colorado was well described. I enoyed it enough that I got the second book in the series. Did I mention that I am a sucker for books that keep the same characters and really develop them?
If you like this you will also like CJ Box's "Joe Picket" Novels (Joe is a Wyoming game warden) and if you like CJ Box's books you'll like this too.
