THE STORM IS RISING…
Pastor Jonah Borden loses the life savings of an elderly widow when the First National Bank of Grand Lake, Minnesota, is robbed. Now he is playing detective, trying to solve the crime and recover the widow’s money.

But his friends in law-enforcement can’t seem to help him, and information about the case mysteriously disappears. In the meantime, he faces professional challenges, and to top it off, his own relationship with the beautiful Leyla Bennett is in troubled waters.

Jonah must overcome a malicious plot against his life, the ghosts of his past, and face the fury of Superior itself, if he is to save himself and the ones he loves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superior Storm - superior novel! December 31, 2012
By olive
Format:Kindle Edition
Tom Hilpert's sequel to Superior Justice does not disappoint.

I welcomed back coffee-guzzling, dry-humoured pastor Jonah Borden to my reading chair like an old friend, along with other familiar characters.

What I really love about Hilpert's writing is his refusal to be rushed, and the way it gives you permission to do the same. There is no shortage of action, but what a pleasure to sit down and read a book that unfolds steadily, takes time to stop and smell the coffee, develops the characters and their relationships, and yet still holds the tension and has you turning pages compulsively.

This is an honest-to-goodness, well-written book with a most likeable protagonist and 'hero' if we can call him that. And while there is a religious element in the sense of being inside the life of a Lutheran pastor, it certainly doesn't 'get in the way', and it's not preachy.

I say bring on more sleuthing for Jonah, and a TV mini-series!

2.0 out of 5 stars Just Okay 2 1/2 stars February 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I found the most interesting character in this book to be the feral cat. The story drags at points and I was able to deduce who the murderers were about halfway through so I skimmed through the rest. I think better editing would've moved the story along, given it better continuity and tightened up the plot. It's not an awful read but it does drag.

3.0 out of 5 stars To much repetition March 29, 2013

I liked the main character. However, 75% of this book took place out on a boat in the middle of Lake Superior with those same six characters. It went on and on and on stretching the main part of the book way too long. And the timeline was so far fetched I had to laugh. This man is on a small boat in a raging storm with gun weilding criminals, manages to get into a dinghy behind the boat that breaks loose, gets rescured by a passing freighter, changes his clothes, eats, etc., gets them to take him back to the small boat and nobody has ever missed him! I loved the main character but the book was a let-down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book! February 4, 2014

Having lived in Duluth Minnesota from 30 years this book was wonderful. I could picture the scenes in my minds eye the Highway 61 which we travel on every October. Split Rock lighthouse, Two Harbors. Duluth. The forest and its trails. The vast beauty of Lake Superior shores Pastor Jonah lives on. The story is intriguing and keeps you turning the page! I enjoy the gentle way Tom brings faith in God into the story along with its humor of them dar Luth-A-rens don't cha know! Jonah's desire and struggle to do the right thing in no matter what situation he is in is to say the least refreshing! Thoroughly enjoy the Superior series and hope there is another one in the works!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice story April 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Fluffy, lightweight reading. The characters are never really developed, so one does not empathize with them, much. The most indepth writing was the complicated descriptions of mechanical things on the boat. Not a bad book, but does not inspire loyalty to further books in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable as an old pair of shoes October 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Sitting in sunny Florida reflecting on a book that took me to the cold winterlands of Minnesota. Don't like the cold but I felt the chill as the Pastor took me fishing in cold water and spent hours in the freezing waters of Lake Superior. Woven around all of that was a story so easy to read you really didn't want to put it down. Plenty of excitement and at the same time, comfortable as an old pair of shoes.

More About the Author

Tom Hilpert grew up in the tropical paradise of Papua New Guinea. When he was ten years old, he knew he wanted to write books. In fact, he began writing several books at that age. Thankfully, they are lost forever.

However, his more recent works are available in print and ebook formats. His fiction features strong, memorable, quirky characters who face mysteries and adventures with humor and persistence.

Although Hilpert finds great fulfillment in preaching as a pastor, he detests novels that are used as a thin cover to preach. He writes in order to tell a story that is fun to read, not to preach at readers. Rest assured: though his protagonist is also a preacher, you won't find sermons in Hilpert's novels.

Tom is contemplating the next Superior Mystery. Also in the works is a creative memoir of his youth overseas.
