The "Superlux" is one of hundreds of brands, under which these headphones are sold. And they symbolize new quality era in geniuine chinese made headphones. The key secret is used speakers - these are 100% same as being used in AKG and Sony headphones (since made at same chinese factory). So, from there comes the sound quality, which costs you less, compared to the original brands. Saying literaly, Peter paid $100 for sony's headphones, and price included development of these headphones. While Paul bought superlux, he paid nothing for development, since development was funded by sony.

To be short, Superlux HD661 is clone of Sony MDR-7506.

Regarding the sound quality, here's what you get:

1. Clear and powerfull bass, but not the boombox like effect, like with Koss porta pro, you'll get just enough of bass. But you can pump it up with EQ - headphones can do much more.

2. A bit overbrighten and sharp higher mids - may be irritating for a longtime listening experience. However, saxes, trumpets and other reed/brass instrument sound totally live and give you full presence feeling. You'll definetly need some EQ punch, to correct this error.

3. Very clean and transparent high frequencies, with amazing detail clarity. This is the are where these headphones really shine.

4. Despite having closed design, these headphones are no way meant to heavily reduce outside noise. Even my crappy sony mdr-nc7 beats them hands down, when coming to noise cancelling. So, listening experience better to be restricted to inside areas.

5. Input impedance is quite high, so your average iLemming player may have no enough juice to rock these headphones really hard. This again suggests stationary usage of these headphones.

I read about these headphones on headfonia's website review. I ended up ordering a pair for my brother because I didn't really need a pair... I have a few pairs of Sennheisers (HD-280pro, PX100-ii, PX200-ii, CX200 earbuds, and had the PX100s) and another AKG K99... what can I say, I'm a sucker for <$100 headphones. So although I can't compare them to the Sony's that they're often compared to, I will say I listened to them, loved them and ended up buying a pair for myself.

The fit is very comfortable (I have a big head, and the HD-280pros hurt after awhile) and physically they feel good and not cheap. They sound awesome, definitely a brighter sound compared to Sennheiser's darker sound, and can definitely benefit through a headphone amp.

I suppose these are more aimed against the Beats portable headphones though, seeing that they're offered overseas in multiple colors. From my experience with Beats, they're overpriced and they colorize the sound quite a bit making them poor monitoring headphones. Personally, even though I'm not using the HD661s for monitoring, I prefer a more accurate sound even for casual listening.

For only $40, no brainer. Get these. And while the other reviewer says these sound exactly like $50 headphones... I disagree. The AKG K99 are $50 headphones. The PX100-ii are $50 headphones (that I love, but the build quality is fragile, evident by the PX100s that broke on me and countless other people). I would argue these sound like $75-$100 headphones.

I'll start by saying that I'm not an audiophile, but I do like music that sounds good. I also didn't want to spend a fortune on some of the other headphones out there. This was a happy medium. Not cheap, but definitely not expensive. The design is setup to not adjust as it is a one-size-fits-all idea, and that actually works quite well. I have a big head, and other's who have tried it on have not mentioned it as being too loose or too tight. I like the cord as well, it is long, but coiled so I don't have a big cord lying all over my computer and desk at work. I was recommended to by these by pianoguys.com, they use it to lay down track upon track of audio-awesomeness. The sound is great, too. I don't know how to describe it without turning certain people on or off, so here is my opinion: the sound is rich, full, and you can hear the highs and the lows. To me, rich sound comes from very clear high, to very defined low (bass). I'd recommend these to anybody. For my non-audiophile ears, these sounded better than a friends $200 pair he let me try for a morning.

Audiophiles stay away. This headphone is by no means perfect, but for its price and intended use I think it performs great. Because it is closed back and $40, its frequency response and sound quality aren't amazing; that being said, for $40 it is probably the best closed back headphone you can find. Superlux does an amazing job at replicating expensive headphone designs and sounds. If you are looking for a headphone that you can listen good music or game with at home, this isn't it. Get a pair of open-back headphones for that unless you absolutely can't have people hearing what you are, they will always sound better, period. But if you're like me and are looking for a pair of headphones to bring with you when you go out, these are perfect. They passively isolate sound well, have a low impedance so you don't need to bring an amp with you wherever you go, fit the head snugly so they won't fall off when walking, are fairly comfortable (I can listen for 1-2 hours before my ears get hot and sweaty), and are affordable. I would definitely recommend these.
