More About the Author

Along with Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Millar has been one of the key writers for Marvel Comics in the 21st century. After proving himself in the '90s as a talent to watch while writing for DC Comics and the UK comic 2000AD, his arrival to Marvel came at a time when Ultimate Spider-Man had just shot up the sales charts. It was in this environment that Millar made his first major contribution to Marvel with Ultimate X-Men, as Millar integrated forty years' worth of X-Men history, characters and lore into a solid two-year run, making the companion title to Ultimate Spider-Man every bit the creative and commercial success. Next up was The Ultimates, a new rendering of the Avengers that was to continue building on the success of the Ultimate line. He and artist Bryan Hitch pulled it all off in spades: The Ultimates and its sequel, Ultimates 2, were ensconced at the top of the sales charts every month; what's more, they were critical successes, as well. Meanwhile, Millar was invited to enter the regular Marvel Universe to take a stab at two of its most iconic characters: Spider-Man and Wolverine. Paired with industry heavyweights to draw his stories -- Terry Dodson on Marvel Knights Spider-Man and John Romita Jr. on Wolverine -- Millar brought the same fast-paced and cleverly constructed plots with which his Ultimate fans were already familiar. Amid building a small library of Millarworld indie comic books -- including the titles Chosen and Wanted, the latter of which was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster starring Angelina Jolie -- he managed to write Civil War, the epic seven-issue miniseries that definitively reshaped the landscape of Marvel's heroes. Kick-A**, a Marvel Icon project done in tandem with John Romita Jr., made an impressive impact on the sales chart before also being adapted for a major motion picture. In addition, Millar has reunited with Civil War artist Steve McNiven in both the pages of Wolverine and their creator-owned book Nemesis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!, November 23, 2004
This review is from: Superman Adventures Vol. 1: Up, Up and Away! (Paperback)
This delightful little graphic novel (Superman Adventures - Volume 1: Up, Up and Away!) is actually a collection of four stories from SUPERMAN ADVENTURES 16, 19 and 22-24. The storylines of these four adventures are quite exciting, and the illustrations came out quite striking. My ten-year-old son loved this book, and highly recommends it to you. So do I!

Incase you are interested, the four stories are:

"Clark Kent, You're a Nobody," in which Clark Kent suddenly finds that he is not Superman, and never was. While Clark goes about trying to figure out what has happened, Superman is flying around on his normal duties: rescuing people and fighting crime. What's going on here?

In "The Bodyguard of Steel," Superman must protect the President of the United States (who looks suspiciously like Bill Clinton) against a super-assassin. But, there's more here than meets the eye.

In "War Games" (actually a two-part story), all of Metropolis seems to be going wrong, as computers everywhere start to go haywire. Who is behind this evil plan, and what are they hoping to accomplish?

"Power Corrupts, Super Power Corrupts Absolutely," sees Superman's powers stolen by the super-villain Parasite. What can Superman do to stop him?

3.0 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader, September 3, 2007
This review is from: Superman Adventures Vol. 1: Up, Up and Away! (Paperback)
These are comics to go along with the Cartoon Network branded Superman, so the design look is the same, for Superman, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, and others. However, the stories are written by Mark Millar, among others, and are not too bad. Superman faces off with Mxyzptlk, Luthor, Brainiac and the Parasie, in a small digest sized edition that is pretty well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, May 13, 2007
This review is from: Superman Adventures Vol. 1: Up, Up and Away! (Paperback)
The main author of these recopilations (Superman Adventures vols. 1-4) is Mark Millar. Each one of the stories is a nice homage to the Superman Universe, in the same sense of All Star Superman of Grant Morrison. I mean, Millar pretend to reflect the essence of the character putting aside the continuity controversy. In that sense, the adventures are universal and atemporal.
It is unbelievable the love Millar has put in this job. While in The Authority Millar was really critic of the role of superhero, in Superman Adventures we found a superhero in the Golden Age sense. I think the different pointviews do not obey to the public of each comic (mature readers vs kids), but to the finality of the author.
Do not deceive yourself: these compilations are not only for kids. Give them a chance.
