Highly recommended!,

This review is from: Superman Adventures Vol. 1: Up, Up and Away! (Paperback)
This delightful little graphic novel (Superman Adventures - Volume 1: Up, Up and Away!) is actually a collection of four stories from SUPERMAN ADVENTURES 16, 19 and 22-24. The storylines of these four adventures are quite exciting, and the illustrations came out quite striking. My ten-year-old son loved this book, and highly recommends it to you. So do I!
Incase you are interested, the four stories are: "Clark Kent, You're a Nobody," in which Clark Kent suddenly finds that he is not Superman, and never was. While Clark goes about trying to figure out what has happened, Superman is flying around on his normal duties: rescuing people and fighting crime. What's going on here? In "The Bodyguard of Steel," Superman must protect the President of the United States (who looks suspiciously like Bill Clinton) against a super-assassin. But, there's more here than meets the eye. In "War Games" (actually a two-part story), all of Metropolis seems to be going wrong, as computers everywhere start to go haywire. Who is behind this evil plan, and what are they hoping to accomplish? "Power Corrupts, Super Power Corrupts Absolutely," sees Superman's powers stolen by the super-villain Parasite. What can Superman do to stop him?

These are comics to go along with the Cartoon Network branded Superman, so the design look is the same, for Superman, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, and others. However, the stories are written by Mark Millar, among others, and are not too bad. Superman faces off with Mxyzptlk, Luthor, Brainiac and the Parasie, in a small digest sized edition that is pretty well done.

Outstanding!,

The main author of these recopilations (Superman Adventures vols. 1-4) is Mark Millar. Each one of the stories is a nice homage to the Superman Universe, in the same sense of All Star Superman of Grant Morrison. I mean, Millar pretend to reflect the essence of the character putting aside the continuity controversy. In that sense, the adventures are universal and atemporal.
It is unbelievable the love Millar has put in this job. While in The Authority Millar was really critic of the role of superhero, in Superman Adventures we found a superhero in the Golden Age sense. I think the different pointviews do not obey to the public of each comic (mature readers vs kids), but to the finality of the author. Do not deceive yourself: these compilations are not only for kids. Give them a chance. |
