This review is from: Superman Archives Vol. 8 (Hardcover)
This volume reprints issues 30-35 of the Superman comic book from September/October 1944 to July/August 1945. Each issue contains 3 Superman stories and one featuring Lois Lane. One of the Superman stories is written and drawn by the creators of Superman (first published in 1938) Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. 10 of the remaining stories are written by Don Cameron and 9 by Bill Finger (uncredited co-creator of Batman), both regular writers on the series. The stories are drawn by regulars Ira Yardborough (8), Ed Dobrotka (8) and Sam Citron (7).

The stories are primarily concerned with Superman fighting criminals or for social justice; no costumed villains back then, though Luthor and the Toyman, established villains, appear in stories, and the Siegel and Shuster story introduces Mr Mxyztplk, who also has a second story in this volume. Another then-regular character, the confidence trickster Wilbur Wolfingham also has a story. The Lois Lane stories feature Lois defeating criminals, sometimes more by luck than judgement, but all without Superman's help; and Clark Kent is usually absent from most of them.

If you are a regular collector of Golden Age Superman comics, then this is a four-star volume, of the same quality as preceding ones. If you are more familiar with the more modern Superman, then this may not be for you.
