This Man of Steel book is a steal!
For around ten dollars, what you get is, a large format, hardbound, rock solid edition, in full color, on great quality paper, of the first years of this awesome comic strip. Each page contains one Sunday strip, for back to back entertainment, that seems to go on and on. Wonderful. I do have a thought on the glossy papers, though its not a dampener. I would think those acid-free non-reflecting crisp sheets of paper would bring out the vivid black pen-brush work as well as those colors better.

Interesting look into the early Superman character.,

I have been a fan of the Man of Steel for most of my life. This volume is a great look at what the originators, Siegel and Shuster thought of the character. The Clark Kent legend is glossed over for the sake of precious newpaper strip space. I like the fact that Siegel and Shuster were trying to keep Superman based in a 'reality' of sorts. He doesn't fly, but leaps incredibly high, can't be hurt by gunfire, but in one strip he can be gassed.. and his uniform colors (the "S" varies ) as the authors were changing and developing the character. I found Superman in the early strips to be a lot like Spiderman in his early days, climbing up buildings and quick with a flip remark when perfoming a super feat. All in all it was a great "let's do the time-warp" into Superman's early manifestation and I recommend it to any fan of the Man of Tomorrow!

Colorful Coffee Table Book,
By Nelson Aspen "Author/Journalist" (Los Angeles & NYC, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Superman: Sunday Classics 1939-1943 (Hardcover)
This handsome, colorful coffee table book at an affordable price is a fun gift for both the casual pop culture observer and the die-hard comics fan. All of Superman's early newspaper adventures are beautifully reproduced here for nostalgic enjoyment. Never has the Man of Steel look more square-jawed and heroic...and never was there a damsel in more constant distress than Lois Lane! Supes' arch nemesis, Lex Luthor, even makes an early appearance. It's especially interesting to see the effect that WWII had on Superman's adventures.
Definitely a great addition to anyone's library. Up, up and away! |
