5.0 out of 5 stars Page for page, it may be the best book on race ever written., August 31, 1997
This review is from: From Superman to Man (Hardcover)
Although presumably a work of fiction, "From Man to Superman" succeeds in doing in a slim 127 pages what whole libraries of works of non-fiction have never done - it makes most "white" Americans' ideas about race seem ridiculous. Although written over a half-century ago, it is the most advanced book on race and racism I have ever read - and that includes my recently published book, "WHITE FOLKS": Seeing America Through Black Eyes. That a "black" man living in the Draconian racist climate of 1930s and 40s America could keep his wits about him enough to even think such thoughts is a tribute to the awesome power of the human intellect. That he could garner the Herculian strength and Einsteinian ingenuity to write and publish this most concise criticism of America's racial apartheid system, is almost unbelievable. I cannot praise this book highly enough. It should be required reading for every American, starting with President Clinton.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Deception is the Key, May 29, 2005
This review is from: From Superman to Man (Hardcover)
I had this book for five years before I finally picked it up to read and to my surprise, it was magnificent...an exciting verbal exchange between a politician whose knowledge regarding people is neglegeable and a porter whose knowledge of people is extensive. The two strike up a conversation first as servant to customer then ending as teacher informer to student learner. Its very passionate, engrossing and will keep your interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise, July 13, 2000
This review is from: From Superman to Man (Hardcover)
While cleaning out a closet full of books at the community center where I serve as its Educational Director, this book falls off of the shelf. It has been the most enlightening book I have ever read! The previous reviewers have spoken ever so eloquently, I will simply say, given the psuedo-intellectual, "we have overcome" times we live in, J.A. Rogers' work should be manditory reading for all. At home and abroad. This book keeps it "real.

5.0 out of 5 stars From Darkness to Light, December 8, 2009
This review is from: From Superman to Man (Hardcover)
If I were to provide only one book on the subject of racism, this would be it. The superb deconstruction of every racial myth, while displaying the horrific, racist, conditions in America makes this a required reading. I had the privilege of being part of bringing this story to the stage. A good friend from college bought the stage rights; I designed and built the set, and played the part of The Senator. We are to revive the show in February '10, playing in Baltimore.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all African-American YOUNG men with a brain., October 14, 1999
This review is from: From Superman to Man (Hardcover)
As I approach my last year toward my PhD in nursing, I still have yet to find a better read. There is no reason for this book not to be a must read by parents of all young men who may want to understand a challenge. The conversation between the senator and porter was an excellent one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic!!, December 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: From Superman to Man (Hardcover)
After I started reading this book I couldn't put it down, it presented the philosophy of white superiority as the ridiculous, pathetic attempt of a numerical minority (Caucasians) to bolster their own short-comings at the expense of every other race. It is clearly written, and superbly presented as well as full of numerous facts. Anyone looking for the truth about race should read this book.

Hands down this book should be a MANDATORY read of all young African Americans. If BET were to share just a fact a day with it's viewers; that would single handedly change the state of todays youth, which would entail a more productive renasiance-esque future for all!!! Please read this book!! And share with all!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book of African American thought, February 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: From Superman to Man (Hardcover)
This is historically the best book I've read since, "Sister outsider". In only 129 pages you will find the history of the world. Historians will truly enjoy this witty and humorous text. It reminds one of the teachings of Fanon. What I would like to know, if anyone can answer this question for me. Who is the M. Finot that J.A. Rogers often quotes in the book? Thanks Sincerely.Jm

5.0 out of 5 stars African American Classic, March 3, 2009
This review is from: From Superman to Man (Hardcover)
This book should be a must read for all African Americana young and young at heart. It brings a perspective you won't find in any history books in school. Written in the language of the time its a litlle challenging at first to read but you'll soon adjust. Short and to the point. A tale of a Pullman porter and a senator's conversation on true american history. A true classic. Share with all your friends but don't expect to get it back. This is my third copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the greatest book about racial mythology ever, July 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: From Superman to Man (Hardcover)
When I first read this book I just couldn't believe it. The most searing, personal, rational explanation for and dissection of "unexplainable" racism ever. J. A. Rogers' deceptively simple work should be a must read for every American graduating from our school systems. Extraordinary...timeless. International, universal in scope and importance.
